Going Home With Me

A Little Kitchen Update - March 2015

For the whole post, you'll be kind enough not to judge the non-staged state of the pictures... I'm sick and I just couldn't concentrate on anythingwhen I realised I needed to snap a few more pictures for this post. I snapped the pics while my eyes cried for no reason!

Do you remember when I repainted the chair in front of my kitchen window?

I now love that spot and the cats think it's the perfect chair to cuddle with me while I sip a cup of tea... that I have no idea where to put while someone purring requires my attention.

So I used an old stool that I have and that is my very first ever paint project. It's not very beautiful, but it turned out very useful either to put a cup of tea or to step on it to grab something on the last shelf of the cabinets.

Still, I couldn't help but think that a stool with a round shape and three legs would be a lot more elegant... Something like this...

This is the item I noticed in the "vide-grenier" I told you about in my previous post, the item I didn't buy, the item that waited all day long for me to come back for it, the item that was meant to go home with me!

Much more elegant, but a little too dark, isn't it?

Plus élégant, mais un peu sombre, non?

I went through my usual hesitation "to paint or not to paint"... I'm always so afraid to ruin things.

A little sanding and a coat of primer later, there was no coming back... It always looks ugly after the primer and it's the moment I think "what have I done?"

I was out of my usual "Pavilion Blue" so I used Farrow & Ball "Pale Powder" instead. It's just a tad bluer and softer, really lovely and then I used All White to do the stripes.

The stool took one coat of primer, two coats of paint and three coats of clear topcoat.

I'm not a huge fan of heavy distressing (sorry) and I believe it has something to do in living in a very shabby Cottage I'm trying to nurse back to health. But I figured the stool would get regular use from me and the cats, so I decided to anticipate and very, very slighly distress it, so the first claw print in it won't show so much.

The neighbour's cat was very, very interested in the whole process...

So, was I right to bring that little stool home?

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: No cat food was hurt during that makeover.

PS2: Obviously, my patio was a mess when I did this project...  I could apologise and pretend it was just that day, but hey, I'm busy with the inside of the Cottage for now!

PS3: I do read your posts, but forgive me if I don't comment for a little while. The flu makes my eyes cry and it was already difficult to type that post!

PS4: I'm linking with a few great parties!

A Walk By The Sea In Erquy, Brittany

Wandering Aorund Cottage - March 2015 Edition

I'd love to tell you that I've had time to go to a new place and take pictures for you, but this isn't the case, I'll tell you why in the usual PSs.

Still, I went through my archives and I can take you some place that is new for you, hopefully, while I stay warm at home.

Due to my brain being in a thick fog right now, I chose a place that didn't require too much historical research for me...

Last summer, my childhood friend came to the Cottage to spend a week in Brittany. On the Sunday she was there, I told her there was a big "vide-grenier" that day on a pretty seaside town called Erquy: I could do some thrifting while she walked on the beach. The picture was of course taken blurry on purpose so that the faces of sellers and thrifters couldn't be seen. I'm that good... or that was my lucky day of the year.

Actually, I think it was my lucky day of the year... I found many, many things during that "vide-grenier". There was also one item that caught my eye and that I didn't buy. Unfortunately, it was rather cloudy and rather chilly, which was surprising as we had had the warmest summer... The clouds weren't very inviting, so my friend and I decided to just eat in a nice restaurant I know in this town and then drive back home.

View from the restaurant

After lunch, it still wasn't raining and we could spot a few rays of sunshine, so we agreed on a little walk. I was already regretting not buying that little item, but I couldn't ask my friend to go back to the "vide-grenier", could I?

So we climbed the steep streets to see the harbour from above.

The town of Erquy is now famous for being the capital of the great scallop. To be fair, it's not exactly the only town to claim that title around Cottage...

But before that, the town was also famous because from its hills was extracted some pretty pink granite. This granite was used to pave Paris' streets... Think about it next time you visit Paris: you're walking on paves that come from that paradise-like place. The hole that was made by taking the granite away is now a pond overlooking the sea.

After we passed the pond, it still wasn't raining, so my friend suggested we took the very famous "GR34", the footpath I already talked to you about, that follow the coast of Brittany, all around the peninsula.

As we followed the coast path, we were mesmerised by the changing colours of the flowers, but also of the sky and the sea as the clouds weregoing away.

Without even noticing it, we walked to the "Cap d'Erquy" which is a lovely headland.

I took every risk that was needed to get beautiful pictures for you, climbing on rocks...

But the risks that day weren't where I expected them to be... They were not on the rocks overlooking the sea, they were right on the footpath...

What? Don't you see anything ominous? Let me ask him (her?) to pose for you.

Comment?

Really it was rather small, but even if I was willing to take a few risks, I wasn't brave enough to put my finger next to the snake to show you a scale...

I told you it was my lucky day: I was wearing good walking shoes when I met the snake, unlike the young man in front of me who was walking bearfoot!

But that's not all! As we walked back to the car from the "Cap d'Erquy", we had to go through the "vide-grenier" once more. Everybody was putting the unsold stuff back in their car and calling it a day... And there was the item I had hesitated to buy, still waiting for me. So of course, it went back to the Cottage with me... I'm showing it  to you in the next post!

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: This post is dedicated to my hot pink hoodie I lost at some point during the walk!

PS2: I have the flu, so forgive me if I don't visit your blogs these days: the lines are just dancing in front of my eyes. That's also the reason I had to go through my archives.

PS3: I'm sharing this post with some of my favourite blogs (if I don't spend the next days sleeping off the flu).

Save Cottage

The Dining Nook Transformation - The Floor Rescue

episode 2 out of ???

The dining nook is a work in progress. I showed you in my last post how it used to be a separate room that I decided to open to the kitchen. When I got the keys to Cottage, it looked like that...

One of the things that really bothered me was the floor. I love terra cotta floors, but this was such a bad reddish imitation that sucked the light out of the room...

Also, I didn't think it was a good idea to have three different floors in a tiny cottage.

So I decided that while we opened the wall between the kitchen and dining-room, I'd have some new tiles laid on the old ones. It was meant to be pretty simple...

Until as we were taking care at the same time of something in the living-room you'll know nothing about today, we discovered that there was a problem with the walls that were very wet... We suspected that the problem originated in the floor...

Creating a hole in the drywall to check how it looks behind... not good!

It turned out Cottage was very sick: he only had a very, very thin cement slab under the tiles: on a garden that has two water springs and in an area where it rains quite a lot, it created a huge humidity problem in the house.

The very thin slab that used to be directly above the garden ground.

"Cottage, you're very, very sick. We're going to try and save you, but it's going to be hard", was what I told Cottage before I left the house for a few weeks, coming back every two days to check on him.

Well, truth be told, I never thought it would be that hard. The floor was completely removed downstairs and the workers dug deeper, so a draining system could be put next to the South wall... A hole was even created in the dining-room stone wall so that the draining pipes could go directly outside. I wish for nobody to see their house in that dreadful state.

Somehow even I had a difficult time envisioning a cosy dining-room there...

"Cottage, really, I don't know if I can keep going... I never thought it would come to that."

But slowly, several layers of insulation where added, until a new thicker concrete slab was poured.

And finally, the tiles I had chosen for what should have been an easy project reached the new floor.

"Cottage, you know what? I think we're going to make it!"

This summer sealed my relationship with Cottage... I was so close to just get rid of Cottage at some point... But having both survived this traumatic event made us want to stay together!

The new floor brings light in the rooms downstairs and the fact that it runs from one room to an other ties all the areas together.

"Hey! Petite Blonde!"

"What?"

"Thanks for saving me!"

"It was the honorable thing to do."

"I'm going to trust you a little more with your crazy ideas now..."

"Psst ! Petite Blonde !"

"Quoi ?"

Still, there is still a long road ahead of us till we have my dream dining-nook... More episodes to come next month!

See you soon,

A bientôt,
