Invisibility Cloak

Cottage Door Project - part 3

Since the day I had the main door of Cottage changed, I've had a love/hate relationship with it.

I love that during the day I'm able to see my garden even when it's cold and the door is closed.

I hate that moment in winter when it gets dark so early that unexpected visitors are still possible and with the lights on they can immediately see all the mess my living-room is in.

I've been looking for ideas on the Internet and have even bought a blue patterned curtains that I really love... But I soon realised I wasn't envisionning it at my door.  I was a bit lost.

Then one day I watched a house design tv show... Oh, who am I kidding?  I was watching a fiction tv show as usual and I noticed that Emily's door in Revenge looked a lot like mine and that she had on her door the same sheer curtains that I had on my dining room window... And I loved the look on her double door!

I ordered the same curtain I had for the dining-room, bought a pole at the local hardware store. In fact I bought two as the first I bought made it impossible to open the door and I didn't find it really easy to have to climb in and out of the living-room window all the times, though the cats seem to think it's fine.

Then came the best part: hemming the curtain. I decided to do it with my mom and it went a lot like this...
Mom: You should decide how long you want it to be, then measure the curtain, then cut and hem it.
Me: No, I'm going to hang the curtain, put pins where I think it's long enough, then cut it  and hem it.
Mom: I've always measured first. You don't even measure?
Me: Well, it's an old crooked house and a cheap curtain that isn't straitgh in the first place.
Mom: Why did you need my help then?
Dad (yes, he was there on the sofa, watching us): Women!!!

Anyway, the curtain was hemmed an I really love the result.  As it's a light curtain, it doesn't block the view when it's open. As it's a sheer curtain, it doesn't block the light when it's close during the day (which usually only happens if I have a bad day), but it blocks enough of the viex for the inside to become invisible when it's needed.

Now I'm in love with my front door all the time. So the Cottage door project is finished for me...

But you my have noticed a few cats in some pictures, they are the reason there'll be one more episode in this series. To be fair, this last project isn't completed, but I'll show you the beginning so you don't imagine that all I did this summer was hemming a sheer curtain!

See you soon for the last part!

A bientôt pour la dernière partie !

PS1: I don't know if you get notifications when someone unsuscribes from your blog. Just in case you do, don't be surprised to get one that I have unsuscribed. I still love your blog and I already have resuscribed with the new email address that blogger accepts. It's a huge mess right now as I chose to transfer autonatically informations and mails from the old address to the new one and it's not working great! But I bet in a few days I'll know where to find your comments and how to reply to them ;)

PS2: I'm sharing my new door and its new sheer curtain at the following parties!

Cheers To Me!

The Dining-Room Transformation - episode 7 out of ???

The Sheer Curtain

Hello there! I'm so glad you're still around for the seventh episode of this never-ending series! Many of the first posts in this series were about very useful things.

I mean, sure, the new floor looks great, but it also had to be redone due to insulation problems; uncovering the ceiling sure gave Cottage some charm, but I also chose to do it because I believe hidden wood in an old house is dangerous (we have a couple of problems with that in Brittany). Again, I changed the window for a more cottage-y one, but it was first to get a more energy-efficient one...

Today, I'm going to show you a perfectly useless project that makes me so happy.

Some of you may remember my love for cotton sheer curtains floating in the air: I was already dreaming about them when I wrote this post or when I was watching Revenge.

I decided to make that dream come true in the dining-room.

There's no privacy issue in the dining-room. The window faces the garden and behind my garden is a field and after that an other field... Basically except seagulls, no one can see me!

So I ordered the same curtain I had already ordered for the kitchen... But this time, I did not intend to cut them.

And then I brought my neighbour a bouquet of my lemon verbena he loves... He could do nothing but come help me with the curtain rod after that! I didn't trust my self to drill holes in my brand new walls (more on that in a few posts).

I chose a very simple white wood rod and I thought I'd attach the curtain with bows like the kitchen ones. But as the curtain is hung high, I was unable to open them without climbing on a step-ladder once they had been closed... So I went back to the store to buy some rings and re-attached each bow to a ring.

My curtain stuck when it didn't have any rings/ mon rideau coincé sans ses anneaux!

I had ordered a long curtain and it puddled on the floor in a very bloggy way (sorry it doesn't seem I have a good picture showing it)... But very, very soon, it drove me mad... It might look good on blogs, but I have no idea how other blogers make it work. Here, it seemed to mostly attrack all the cat hairs that keep piling in Cottage!

Only picture I found where you can nearly see the long curtain at Christmas time.

Still, it took me six months to gather the will to hem it!

What do you think? I mean about the curtain, not the fact that it took me so long to finish the project.

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: Of course, in all those pictures, you noticed nothing else than the curtain... When you'll close this tab, you'll magically forget seeing any furniture in this room.

PS2: The branch on my window sill is blooming this morning... I'd share a picture but a new project has already begun in the dining-room... All I can say is: I'm not eating there today!

My Beautiful Laundry Rooms

Choosing Kitchen Appliances - 1

I'm wondering if the title of that series is accurate since today's post is about something that for most of you isn't in your kitchen and something I didn't really choose for the new kitchen.

Anyway, I really wanted to link to Nancy's party about laundry rooms. Except, I don't have a laundry room. Well, that's if you want to see the glass half empty. I personally consider that I have two laudry rooms. Aren't I a lucky girl?

The washing machine lives in the kitchen. It's quite common in small French houses.

I chose mine when I redid the kitchen two homes ago. Can you see it there next to the window? And who can spot Shadow, who was already sharing my life ?

Then, Shadow, Washing-Machine and I had to move to a rental place for a few months before we met Cottage. Washing-Machine still lived in the kitchen, although I had a hard time finding a picture of it.

Here it is under the oven, even if obviously I was taking a picture of Shadow being somewhere he  shouldn't be, as usual...

Then we all went to live with Cottage...

Puis, on est tous venus au Cottage...

Trusty Washing-Machine is still here, even working while I took that picture apparently as one of its buttons is red...

Now, a washing-machine in the middle of a newly renovated kitchen is something you rarely see on blogs and even if I like mine very much, I wasn't fond of the idea of it in plain sight.

So I reused the curtain that was previously under my sink to hide the washing-machine.

Now, I did tell you I had TWO laundry-rooms, didn't I? While I'll take you to my "second" laundry-room, let me tell you a story.

I wanted a  curtain for my washing-machine with more blue in it and I had left-over fabric from the kitchen chair cushion. So last time I visited my mom, I took the fabric with me to use her sewing-machine to make the new curtain. I told my mom I wanted to do it all alone. I hadn't begun for three minutes that I had to call her.

"Mam! The sewing-machine makes a weird noise!"

"I'm sure it's not! Keep going!"

"Mam! It's making a really weird noise and my thread is all a mess!"

"I'm sure you didn't put the thread right (it's an old sewing machine and putting the thread right is like trying to map a maze)!"

She came in my room, checked the thread -which was perfectly in place - and then screamed:

"It's working on it's own!"

The machine had begun working and nobody was touching anything. We both looked down on the pedal and from there dark smoke was coming... "The floor!" was my first thought as my parents just redid my room's floor. Mom grabbed the pedal and threw it through the window in the garden...

My new curtain is still very much a piece of fabric... One project I will not show you this month!

"Maman!

While I was telling you the story, you probably noticed that I don't actually have a second laundry room. I have a garden with a clothesline... It works really great, the laundry smells heavenly after drying in the sun, it also looks great, if you ask me. At least from afar...

The clothesline must have been there for ages and this winter it got serioulsy damaged with our tempests, so I'll have to come up with a new idea for the clothesline... Let me tell you that the difficult part is not to come up with ideas, it's to choose between the dozens I have!

Now, this summer has been so warm and sunny so far, that using the clothesline has been a pleasure and I may even drink tea watching the laundry drying.... It's actually been the best summer since I bought the Cottage, so I call it the flip-flop summer... and as some of you asked to see more of me... Here it is! Ready?

The cats don't have flip-flops, but there's been a lot of sunbathing going on the patio...

And even some gymnastics...

I hope you're all having as good a summer as the cats are having!

PS 1: My parents' new hardwood floor didn't get damaged in the sewing-machine debacle.

PS2: You'll notice that to keep it family friendly, I didn't take the pictures a day when my underwear ws drying...

PS3: The clothesline is not visible from the street or from my neighbours', only from the field...

PS4: Maybe I shouldn't have written the end of that post, because today it's raining!

PS5: My washing-machine is partying there.
