The Post I Should Have Written Long Ago

A Little Loo Update

Please, come on in. I'd offer you a cup of tea, but given the place we're going to visit today, I'm afraid it's going to be a little cramped and I don't want you to spill your tea on my beautiful white painted wood floor. Besides, two people can't sit at the same time there... And as you'll see on one picture, the sit is already taken.

Anyway, some of you might remember that I had the whole upstairs ripped out to add some insulation under the roof (the second floor is actually an old grain attic under the roof) and to redefine four rooms around the landing : an office, from where I'm typing right now, a bedroom that seems huge to me (but would probably be qualified as small by American standards), a small bathroom and a tiny loo.

The loo is the only painted room so far. A while ago, I showed you the calming blue I had chosen for the walls, the pure white I had applied on the slopped ceiling, the floor, the baseboards and the roof window. It was nice... and unfinished.

I wanted a shelf above the loo as I had before... But, of course, the shelf I had before couldn't be reused as I had the new walls rebuilt slightly more apart than they were before. I looked in every store around Cottage and couldn't find one that had the right lenght. I was this close to buy a simple board and have it cut my length, which would have meant to give up on any curvy lines, when in an "empty-your-attic" sale nearby I found a pretty shelf. Shoot, I had forgotten to take my measuring tape... But the lady said it costed a grand total of one euro. So I took the risk. When I drove back home, I rushed to the loo, not to do my little business, but to check if the sheld fitted... And clearly, it looked as if it had been made to be there.

A little work later (I removed the hooks under it, I filled the holes on top of it and painted it), it was ready to be put in place by my neighbour. Since he was there, I asked him to also take care of the old vintage sconce I had bought. I was so proud to think at that moment that one room upstairs was finished... "Hum, hum, Magali, I heard the neighbour say, this sconce is too old. It's not possible to put it in a 'water room' where regulations are stricter."

Oh, no, now I had to find a new sconce and to live with a bare light bulb for a little longer.

See you for the next episode!

La suite au prochain numéro !

Hasta la proxima !

PS : On the pictures, you may have noticed that the door is only primed. It's been painted since and the door handle has been fixed... And the door handle comes with a whole story attached to it !!!

  3. Good Morning....it looks like a nice place to sit, and isn't it the best when you buy something an it's prefect, when you're not even sure it's going to work at all. Cottage must be feeling pretty Great. I'll be looking for that story about the light, and the rest of the upstairs.! Have a Great day at school, I'll also be waiting to hear how you did with the school interview.

  4. Coucou Magali

  16. Hi, Magali,
It looks great! Love the color! One tiny bit of note to what I see...the sky light is positioned more to the right than left of space. Perhaps then, switch the plant to right side for more light . Wicker basket next to commode makes me crazy but I understand why it's there... (maybe two shelves one over the other on wall next to commode and hide the 'stuff' in closed baskets on shelving). Love the magazine holder...nice touch. How about a little rug to soften the space? Something for warm feet on a cold night. Love watching your cottage transform into the cozy, delightful home you are making it. Alot of work and expense, and time, I know, but your doing great! ...you teach Latin! After two years of Latin I was fried! Used it for years but have since forgotten alot from not using it anymore. Au revoir, Nonni (retired interior designer...I can't seem to stop-sorry!)
P.S. Really liked the sweet kitty posing for picture!

    1. Dear Nonni,
The plant is one that doesn't like direct sun light, so it's ok if it stays to the left (and anyway, it's only a few inches difference, it's a very small room). When I took the pictures, I had just changed it to the new container, so it wasn't very beautiful, but now it's thrieving.
Thanks for your visit and comment,
      Magali

I love the pale blue and the door handle. It's so much work, but worth it!

  18. I have been out of town so you may not see this. Love your little room and it serves its purpose and that's all that matters and now a pretty shelf. Our animals don't care what we are doing they just want to be by our side, so cute.

  19. Perfect shelf and sweet kitty :) Hope you find the perfect sconce soon! xx Karen

  20. The shelf looks great, but the kitty makes the room. I can never use the toilet alone. I always have at least one in the room with me, and if the other is not in the room she is sure to be scratching the door outside trying to get in.
