Greengage Tart

Greengage Tart A La Magali

First, I'd like to say a word about my mom's sewing-machine you're all so worried about. It survived the accident: only the pedal had to be changed and we found a shop in a small town nearby that could do it.

So her sewing-machine is saved... And we wish we could say the same thing about her plum-trees. When my parents bought their cottage, there were already three plum-trees in the garden. Since then, plum-trees have been the symbol of their home and I even found a cute vintage print of a plum tree that I gifted my mom (imagine I insert here a picture of said print - but in reality I forgot to snap it).

Suddenly this summer, one after an other, the plum-trees got sick. So we have plums for this summer, but we sadly don't think that the trees will survive until next summer.

Anyway, my mom brought me some plums last time she visited and I decided to use them in a tart. As usual with me, the recipe is very easy and I took extremely useful pictures to explain the process.

Here's what you'll need:
  • a pie crust/pastry, store bought or handmade (mine is handmade using 1 and 1/2 cup of floor, 2 tablespoon of sugar, about 80/100g of butter and as much water as needed - usually 1/4 cup);
  • about 500 g greengage, halved and stoned,
  • 3 to 6 tablespoons of sugar (depending on your taste),
  • 2 eggs,
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract,
  • 150 to 200g (1/2 cup to 3/4 cup) of thick cream,
  • icing sugar for dusting.

Voilà ce dont vous aurez besoin:
  •  une pâte à tarte, achetée ou maison (je fais la mienne un peu au pif avec 1 tasse et demie de farine, 2 cuillerées à soupe de sucre, de 80g à 100g  de beurre - je ne pèse pas -  et un peu d'eau);
  • 2 oeufs,
  • 1 cuillerée à café d'extrait de vanille,
  • 150 à 200 g de crème épaisse,
  • sucre glace pour décorer.

What to do:
  • First, mix all the ingredients for the crust, roll the pastry and put it in a shallow tin or open the pack of your ready made pastry and put it in the same shallow tin.
  • Put the tin in the oven at 200°C/390°F for 15 minues to pre-bake the crust. The recipe said to put baking beans on the crust to prevent any  bubling. I don't have any, so I put a baking sheet on it and load it with an other tin.
  • While the crust is in the oven, lightly whisk the eggs with the vanilla and the sugar, then add the cream.
  • Get the crust out of the oven, pour the above mixture in and carefully add the plums, cut sides up.
  • Bake in the oven for half an hour at 160°C/320°F.
  • Add icing right before serving (not 15 minutes before taking the pictures like I did).

Side notes:
  • I like things to be sweet so I added a few spoons of sugar (it helps the medicine goes down), but the recipe originally only called for three tablespoons...
  • It tastes better if you whisk the eggs with a whisk sporting the colours of Brittany (which are white and black).
  • You may notice in one picture that I have the cutest striped Breton dress...
  • If you're a regular reader, you can play the seven errors game to see all that has changed in the kitchen and dining-room... I couldn't keep everything out of the pictures, even if I tried... More on that later!

Notes:

If you try the recipe,  let me know how much sugar you chose to use!

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: I have to attend a wedding in a few days. Not my favourite activity. And I have nothing to wear - as any woman would say on this occasion, I guess. I was dead serious when I told my mom this other day that I had no dress but that I had found the perfect umbrella for that day in case it was raining. She laughed. So I thought it would make you laugh as well to picture me going to church naked but with the cutest umbrella ever...

Evidemment, je n'ai rien à me mettre...

PS2: I have a Pinterest inspiration board on what to wear for the wedding, though for now, it's all still in the  inspiration state!

PS3: Naked, but with my umbrella for modesty, I'm partying, bringing my greengage tart!

My Beautiful Laundry Rooms

Choosing Kitchen Appliances - 1

I'm wondering if the title of that series is accurate since today's post is about something that for most of you isn't in your kitchen and something I didn't really choose for the new kitchen.

Anyway, I really wanted to link to Nancy's party about laundry rooms. Except, I don't have a laundry room. Well, that's if you want to see the glass half empty. I personally consider that I have two laudry rooms. Aren't I a lucky girl?

The washing machine lives in the kitchen. It's quite common in small French houses.

I chose mine when I redid the kitchen two homes ago. Can you see it there next to the window? And who can spot Shadow, who was already sharing my life ?

Then, Shadow, Washing-Machine and I had to move to a rental place for a few months before we met Cottage. Washing-Machine still lived in the kitchen, although I had a hard time finding a picture of it.

Here it is under the oven, even if obviously I was taking a picture of Shadow being somewhere he  shouldn't be, as usual...

Then we all went to live with Cottage...

Puis, on est tous venus au Cottage...

Trusty Washing-Machine is still here, even working while I took that picture apparently as one of its buttons is red...

Now, a washing-machine in the middle of a newly renovated kitchen is something you rarely see on blogs and even if I like mine very much, I wasn't fond of the idea of it in plain sight.

So I reused the curtain that was previously under my sink to hide the washing-machine.

Now, I did tell you I had TWO laundry-rooms, didn't I? While I'll take you to my "second" laundry-room, let me tell you a story.

I wanted a  curtain for my washing-machine with more blue in it and I had left-over fabric from the kitchen chair cushion. So last time I visited my mom, I took the fabric with me to use her sewing-machine to make the new curtain. I told my mom I wanted to do it all alone. I hadn't begun for three minutes that I had to call her.

"Mam! The sewing-machine makes a weird noise!"

"I'm sure it's not! Keep going!"

"Mam! It's making a really weird noise and my thread is all a mess!"

"I'm sure you didn't put the thread right (it's an old sewing machine and putting the thread right is like trying to map a maze)!"

She came in my room, checked the thread -which was perfectly in place - and then screamed:

"It's working on it's own!"

The machine had begun working and nobody was touching anything. We both looked down on the pedal and from there dark smoke was coming... "The floor!" was my first thought as my parents just redid my room's floor. Mom grabbed the pedal and threw it through the window in the garden...

My new curtain is still very much a piece of fabric... One project I will not show you this month!

"Maman!

While I was telling you the story, you probably noticed that I don't actually have a second laundry room. I have a garden with a clothesline... It works really great, the laundry smells heavenly after drying in the sun, it also looks great, if you ask me. At least from afar...

The clothesline must have been there for ages and this winter it got serioulsy damaged with our tempests, so I'll have to come up with a new idea for the clothesline... Let me tell you that the difficult part is not to come up with ideas, it's to choose between the dozens I have!

Now, this summer has been so warm and sunny so far, that using the clothesline has been a pleasure and I may even drink tea watching the laundry drying.... It's actually been the best summer since I bought the Cottage, so I call it the flip-flop summer... and as some of you asked to see more of me... Here it is! Ready?

The cats don't have flip-flops, but there's been a lot of sunbathing going on the patio...

And even some gymnastics...

I hope you're all having as good a summer as the cats are having!

PS 1: My parents' new hardwood floor didn't get damaged in the sewing-machine debacle.

PS2: You'll notice that to keep it family friendly, I didn't take the pictures a day when my underwear ws drying...

PS3: The clothesline is not visible from the street or from my neighbours', only from the field...

PS4: Maybe I shouldn't have written the end of that post, because today it's raining!

PS5: My washing-machine is partying there.

Back To Saint Suliac

Wandering Around The Cottage - August 2014 Edition - 2

Now that we've admired the houses of the charming village of Saint Suliac in our last walk together, let's visit the church, shall we?

Yes, that's the one we can see from afar, with its really old bell tower.

The first church here was built during the 13th century. During the 15th century, civil wars tore people apart. Some Catholics choose that church as their fort. That's when it was partially destroyed. So some of what we see now was rebuilt later.

Among the parts that are left from the 13th century is this amazing gate that used to enclose the cemetery around the church.

The side entrance of the church is typical of Brittany: there are stone benches under the statues. Beggars would have sat there, hoping for charity from people going to church.

The front entrance of the church faces the river Rance and it's definitely a fishermen's church as you'll see once we've stepped inside.

This is the view from that door.

There's a wonderful work of carved wood in the church, using patterns that are typical of Brittany on the doors, the confessional and the altar.

As it's a fishermen's village, there's a beautiful chapel inside the church dedicated to the Virgin saving drowning men. The details of the sea carved in the wood are fascinating. You'll notice that baby Jesus is giving a drowning sailor a rod to save him.

Fishermen living in Saint-Suliac were what we call "Terre-neuvas", which meant that they sailed all the way to the Canadian coast, to Newfoundland, to fish for cod. It was very dangerous and many of them died before coming back home.

Some day, some of them swore to create an oratory to the Virgin if they all came back alive. And they did. So let's find that oratory, shall we?

Do you remember I said no flip-flop for that tour? That's why! We're going to cross the pebble shore and then go all the way up to the oratory. Follow me!

The oratory is from the 19th century and every August 15th, there's a celebration there and candles are lit by people from the village.

The view from the oratory is quite beautiful. We've been having a really nice sunny summer and you can see in the background that we even had a heat fog that day.

I tried the panoramic thing on my camera for the first time... It's not really well done, but I'll get better, I promise!

I hope you enjoyed the tour and are having a nice summer whether you are travelling for real or only blog-travelling!

PS1: Thanks to my dad for that last picture!
