Greengage Tart A La Magali
First, I'd like to say a word about my mom's sewing-machine you're all so worried about. It survived the accident: only the pedal had to be changed and we found a shop in a small town nearby that could do it.
So her sewing-machine is saved... And we wish we could say the same thing about her plum-trees. When my parents bought their cottage, there were already three plum-trees in the garden. Since then, plum-trees have been the symbol of their home and I even found a cute vintage print of a plum tree that I gifted my mom (imagine I insert here a picture of said print - but in reality I forgot to snap it).
Suddenly this summer, one after an other, the plum-trees got sick. So we have plums for this summer, but we sadly don't think that the trees will survive until next summer.
Anyway, my mom brought me some plums last time she visited and I decided to use them in a tart. As usual with me, the recipe is very easy and I took extremely useful pictures to explain the process.
Here's what you'll need:
- a pie crust/pastry, store bought or handmade (mine is handmade using 1 and 1/2 cup of floor, 2 tablespoon of sugar, about 80/100g of butter and as much water as needed - usually 1/4 cup);
- about 500 g greengage, halved and stoned,
- 3 to 6 tablespoons of sugar (depending on your taste),
- 2 eggs,
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract,
- 150 to 200g (1/2 cup to 3/4 cup) of thick cream,
- icing sugar for dusting.
Voilà ce dont vous aurez besoin:
- une pâte à tarte, achetée ou maison (je fais la mienne un peu au pif avec 1 tasse et demie de farine, 2 cuillerées à soupe de sucre, de 80g à 100g de beurre - je ne pèse pas - et un peu d'eau);
- 2 oeufs,
- 1 cuillerée à café d'extrait de vanille,
- 150 à 200 g de crème épaisse,
- sucre glace pour décorer.
What to do:
- First, mix all the ingredients for the crust, roll the pastry and put it in a shallow tin or open the pack of your ready made pastry and put it in the same shallow tin.
- Put the tin in the oven at 200°C/390°F for 15 minues to pre-bake the crust. The recipe said to put baking beans on the crust to prevent any bubling. I don't have any, so I put a baking sheet on it and load it with an other tin.
- While the crust is in the oven, lightly whisk the eggs with the vanilla and the sugar, then add the cream.
- Get the crust out of the oven, pour the above mixture in and carefully add the plums, cut sides up.
- Bake in the oven for half an hour at 160°C/320°F.
- Add icing right before serving (not 15 minutes before taking the pictures like I did).
Side notes:
- I like things to be sweet so I added a few spoons of sugar (it helps the medicine goes down), but the recipe originally only called for three tablespoons...
- It tastes better if you whisk the eggs with a whisk sporting the colours of Brittany (which are white and black).
- You may notice in one picture that I have the cutest striped Breton dress...
- If you're a regular reader, you can play the seven errors game to see all that has changed in the kitchen and dining-room... I couldn't keep everything out of the pictures, even if I tried... More on that later!
Notes:
See you soon,
PS1: I have to attend a wedding in a few days. Not my favourite activity. And I have nothing to wear - as any woman would say on this occasion, I guess. I was dead serious when I told my mom this other day that I had no dress but that I had found the perfect umbrella for that day in case it was raining. She laughed. So I thought it would make you laugh as well to picture me going to church naked but with the cutest umbrella ever...
Evidemment, je n'ai rien à me mettre...
PS2: I have a Pinterest inspiration board on what to wear for the wedding, though for now, it's all still in the inspiration state!
PS3: Naked, but with my umbrella for modesty, I'm partying, bringing my greengage tart!
DeleteOur damsons are ripening as I speak so I'll give your recipe try and get back to you. Love the umbrella, shame about the dress!
ReplyDeleteI have what seems like a ton of questions so I am going to number them like you number your post scripts.
ReplyDelete1. I am not familiar with greengage, is that a plum? Hopefully this question doesn't make look stupid.
2. Could I use peaches in such a tart?
3. Does the French word for tart also mean a woman of questionable morals like it does in English?
You have great legs maybe the umbrella should be a serious option but that might make you a tart so maybe you should go with a dress. I like all of your inspirations but I am sure I could never find anything as fashionable here in our small town.
4. So what is the shopping like in your area of Brittany?
Love the peak of new things in the kitchen.
Traci
So in your order:
Delete1. Greengage is a kind of green to yellow small plum.
2. In the website I used for inspiration for this recipe, several people had tried with different fruits, so go ahead with peaches.
3. The pun on "tart" doesn't really work in French, a shame for this post! But translation isn't always easy and something is always lost either in English or in French in each post!
4. There are some nice shops in the nearby town, but I really hate shopping for clothes, that's why I've been postponing the dress search for ever! Also I have a tight budget for that, so it's difficult.
Magali, tart of the day!
I have recently found a shop in town selling French greengages, got very excited and bought lots. They take us back to France!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the tart and am going to pin this one! Speaking of tarts....lol.....I am pretty sure most male guests would love JUST the umbrella! Not sure about the bride though. You are too funny Magali! Have a great time at the wedding! Looking forward to pics of the new dress.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to wear the fashionable umbrella! You'd definitely upstage the bride. LOL That tart looks delicious. Sorry about the plum trees. Our apple trees suffered the same fate. :-((
Bisous bisous. Babette
I think your tart, umbrella and that little seating area by the window are wonderful! She should have been planting some seedling plum trees along the way. They get old and die from different diseases. Hope some make it!
ReplyDeleteThe tart looks scrumptious! And I love the idea of wearing the umbrella.....so chic! I am glad your mom's sewing machine was saved:) Sorry about the plum trees,though.... we had a pear tree in our back yard that unfortunately did not survive the last winter :( Thanks for sharing the delicious recipe! Have fun at the wedding~hugs, Poppy
ReplyDeleteYour pie looks amazing, Magali. I’m sure it was delicious. I love the snap of it baking in the oven. Great pie tutorial. You have me laughing over my coffee this morning with the umbrella snap. I do hope you find a dress to go with it or you will take all the attention away from the bride!
ReplyDeleteHappy week sweet girl...............
ReplyDeleteLOL. I love the naked with umbrella picture. You are too cute, and that tart looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteI love your pretty little kitchen and dinning room. I also love plums but have never tasted a plum tart. Looks good though!
ReplyDeleteWe had so many plums this year that I had to try new recipes. This one was easy and tasted good.
DeleteMmmm this looks too yummy. My Mom has a couple wild plum trees in her woods and I always think about trying to pick them before the racoons get them, then I always forget. I love that everybody was so concerned with your mom's sewing machine. As a sewist though, I understand.
ReplyDeleteI'll think good thoughts for the trees and hope they aren't lost. The tart looks wonderful and I know you will too at the wedding. xo Laura
ReplyDeleteLast Thursday, I bought half a kilo greengage plums at the local market, thinking of a plum tart... but my (not so) dear husband ate them all :-s So no tart here ! But we love those plums, adore your cute dress as well as your dear Cottage ! And there is always next Thursday for new plums ! Marcy
ReplyDeleteAh, husbands can't be trusted when it comes to plums! Let me know if you try the recipe next Thursday!
DeleteHello Magali,
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to have you join me for tea! Your tart looks fabulous and I'm guessing it is a sweet treat with tea. I love your blue teacup and indeed, all the transferware I see in your photos; such a pretty pattern! I do hope your mother's plum trees survive! Have a wonderful week.
Blessings,
Sandi
That tart looks delicious! I love all the pretty homemaking pictures you shared too :) Thanks for joining in on the Art of Home-Making Mondays and I do hope you find a lovely dress! For if it doesn't rain, you would not need an umbrella ;0
ReplyDeleteMagali, I'm not sure I could list all the changes in your cottage, but I love everything I see. Your dining room is so charming. Now the tart looks fabulous, and I imagine it tastes delicious. Your photographs are wonderful. I'm very sorry your parents' plum trees are not doing well. Oh, fruit trees can be so finicky! As for your wedding "outfit". . .all I can say is the umbrella is a beauty, but those legs are amazing. You've got it goin' on, girl! :) xxx ~ Nancy
ReplyDeleteMagali, your plum tart looks delicious. If they were my plum trees I'd be outside talking to them and playing music for them! Keep them happy! I think the umbrella would make a lovely accessory at the wedding. ;) Happy Tea Day!
ReplyDeleteA lovely tart! I'll may have to try it this month -- plus are coming to the market!
ReplyDeleteMy mother and I were just talking about the beach plums we used to pick near the shore. So many of the old trees were lost in the Big Storm, and then some more due to the ignorance of builders and residents who have the money for an ocean front house but not the soul for one. Your tart has inspired me - I am off to find a plum tree of my own. Good luck finding a dress for the wedding. You look quite nice in the umbrella but it is bad form to upstage the bride. Try to find something short my child, that will show off your adorable knees.
ReplyDeleteSusan,
DeleteThank you for your visit and comment. Do you know I still read your blog but can't comment anymore since I'm not on Google +?
Your tart looks delicious and I like it when step by step recipes are shared. Now the idea of you naked with only an umbrella for the wedding has brought a smile to my face.
ReplyDeleteWell, you should be the highlight of the wedding in your beautiful umbrella. :) Love the tea cup you shared today. Blessings, Martha
ReplyDeleteSo many lovely things here! The yummy pie and the cutlery. You are adorable behind this giant, seaside umbrella - great legs! I don't know if I like weddings, because I do not attend them usually. I guess I would love them, but if they are not mine, ha-ha! :)

Hi Magali! Your tart looks so good & you cottage has changed so much since the last time I visited your blog. I love how it's all come together! Hope you and kitties are doing well. I'm taking French classes and think of you as I'm trying to read the lesson!
ReplyDeleteSweet, scrumptious and so very pretty! Thanks for the lovely pics and detailed directions on how to whip up this delicious dessert!
ReplyDeletePoppy
When you first started talking about the plums it reminded me of a poem my Mom would say:
ReplyDeleteThis Is Just to Say
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
Did you ever hear it before? Well anyways this plum dessert looks delicious. But what I really noticed, sorry, is how nice your cottage looks like, and the fact you have some pretty looking legs! Thanks for sharing the recipe. Hoping you find something you really love to wear to the wedding!
Oh my goodness! Your blog is like falling into paradise . . . simply charming beyond words. Your tart looks wonderful, but it is that little shelf above the doorway into your dining area that made my heart skip a beat. It must be wonderful living in a small cottage by the sea. I am your newest follower and blogging sister.
ReplyDeleteConnie :)
Magali, you are such a tease (in a good way!)! I forgot to mention your foot picture in your last post, and your umbrella shot cracked me up! The tart sounds heavenly, but the way. I did notice the shelf over your doorway...is that new?
ReplyDeleteOh you made me laugh out loud at the thought of just wearing an umbrella to the wedding. :)
ReplyDeleteThe tart looks delicious and I do hope at least one of the plum trees survives.
What a good post - on so many levels! I thought I was following you, but I have been missing posts, so I have now subscribed by email - your newest follower!
DeleteYou are so funny, Magali, only you would worry about the umbrella when you have no dress!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will look adorable no matter the dress.
How yummy does that tart look! Love that the recipe is simple, I'll have to give it a try, I'll add LOTS of sugar,
I love mine sweet.
Hugs,
Patti

ReplyDeleteMary
I am thrilled with this recipe thank you as (not to rub salt in your wounds) my inlaws have a glut of plums, so I will definitely be making this tart! P.S. Amazing legs!!
ReplyDeleteWell having checked out some of the posts I've misses, I see that indeed you are a petit blond and so delicious pies like this won't make a difference to your waistline. I on the other hand wouldn't dare make this as I'd want to eat it all at once - no self restraint lol !
ReplyDelete
