Fear

Cottage Dining Nook Transformation - The Table - Part 5

All over blogland, people are painting their furniture, transforming whatever they own into beautiful pieces. I'm in awe of what they can do. Me? I'm completely terrified to ruin a piece every time I have the idea to paint. I'm also afraid of missing the wood once it's painted.

I have paint-fear, bad.

Je suis une angoissée de la peinture.

Still once I became the proud second-hand owner of my darling old English pine hutch, I knew something had to be done about my shiny yellowy cheap pine table that was right in front of it.

I decided I could paint it without fearing to ruin it (I couldn't do worse than it was) and without fearing to miss the wood, since I really didn't like it.

I began by sanding the table. This was done for two main reasons. First, I still had the tiniest hope that once stripped, the table could be restained. Second, if not, I wanted to make sure the paint wouldn't peel when applied.

Life at Cottage is always so comfortable...
It quickly appeared that I didn't really like the wood even when raw. Still, I was patient and sanded for several days (I didn't sand all day, though).

Weekend at my parents'. Life's hard...
There, any good blogger would have applied several coats of paint right away. I? I went to visit my parents for a few days... I'm sure it did the wood good to stay in its raw state for a while.

Then, I applied one coat of primer, three coats of my favourite All White by Farrow & Ball, starting by the legs. Once the legs were reattached, I painted the top. You can see on my pictures that I didn't painted under the table, because I was too lazy to sand there.

Once I was happy with the coverage, I slightly sanded the legs so the wood would reappear on the edges. It's very discreet, which is very unblogy, but just the way I like it.

My usual trick to apply paint or topcoat to the leg... Use cat food tins!

Then I applied a topcoat. I chose a water-based, mate finish one. It does look shiny on the pictures, that's because of the light coming from the window. Now, let's also be honest, even in the mate finish, the topcoat does make the table a little shinier than it was before it was applied, but it's so easy to wipe the table with a wet cloth, that I would do it again, no question.

Milo, trapped during the photo session.
Painting the table white was the best solution to fall in love with my dining nook again. Now the table doesn't hurt my eyes anymore and the hutch is the perfect wood touch I wanted in my room. Something I didn't expect, but that makes me smile every time I come into the room is how the light coming from the window now reflects on the table rather than being absorbed by it as before.

I think I well deserve to enjoy my table and have a cup of tea. For once, no need to add a tablecloth before I take pictures!

Aaaahhh! So nice! Everything is perfect! Now, wait! Do those chairs look a little too shiny and yellowy to you?

Tout est parfait ! Enfin !

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: Apart from my painting power, I have an other amazing power, the one to destroy my own body without the help of anyone else! It works in crisis. Sometimes all is well and I can do a great number of things in a day... The last two weeks have been very, very difficult, so I don't think I'll tackle the chair project any time soon. I'd like to thank Melanie from Comfy House who gave me a hint for a new diet that might help me. Emphasis on the "might".

PS2: The unpainted part only shows if you're kneeling on the floor under the table. So I advise you not to!

I'll Paint You In The Summer Time

Cottage Dining Nook Transformation - The Table - Part 4

When I began remodeling my dining nook, I knew exactly what I wanted, very light walls, white trim, white sheer curtains and a beautiful old pine table...

But when I began looking for my perfect table on the Internet, I couldn't find it. The ones I saw where either too big for my very small room, too expensive or too far away from Cottage (and given the price of gas in France, you can easily double or triple the price of the table if you have to drive for more than  an hour to get it).

1.

2.

But as I was searching my usual website for the table, I found a wonderful old pine china hutch that I showed you in the previous post. It made my table look all the more shiny and yellowy and cheap and I had to do something about it.

3.

4.
So first, I went back to search the Internet like my life depended on it...

5.
Nothing.

Rien.
6.
Then I thought, what was it really that I had in mind for my dining nook? A very light and bright room with a touch of wood to bring some cosiness to the space.

7.

8.
I had the perfect touch of wood with my china hutch, so maybe I could make the ugly cheap pine my table was made of by painting it?

9.

10.

I know many of you thought that was what I would do and I'm sorry to report that there's no special prize for those who guessed right.

11.

Anyway, I did what I always do in that kind of situation. I checked the Internet for inspiration... and when browsing Pinterest, I noticed that many, many of the pictures I had stored on my dining-room board actually featured a painted table.

12.

13.

Is one of my inspiration pictures sweet-talking you?

14.

15.

I've already begun working!

Je me suis déjà mise au travail!

See you soon for the reveal!

A bientôt pour voir ma table peinte!

Back In Time

Cottage Dining Nook Transformation - The Table (or?) - part 3

I'm beginning to wonder if my readers come here to see the transformations in Cottage or to make fun of me... So many of you asked me how I sprained my ankle last week that I'm afraid I'll loose half my readers if I don't tell you.

One of the school I work in has gorgeous wood floors that date from the 1940s or 1950s. They keep waxing them in a traditional way... that make them very, very slippery. As I work in two schools, I'm always in a hurry and loaded as a little donkey: laptop and handbag on my shoulder, my school bag in one hand and my photocopies in the other... Also, I always wear nice little pumps to go to work... If you combine all that, this is what you get: at some point, your left foot slips, you're unable to use your hands to grab anything, you fly in the air for a brief moment and then you lie flat on your back, a little stunned, wondering how you'll ever get up again and if your laptop is ever going to come back to life.

I was rather fortunate because I was ok, except for a sore neck and a blue ankle. All of a sudden, it was going back in time: I had suffered several ankle injuries as a young girl, so bandaging my ankle every morning for a week actually made me feel young again... that is, until I met any mirror!

So there, you have the story... The other half of my readers are probably there to hear about my table, though. So, as I told you, I have been looking for the perfect old pine table on my favourite website for some time. Every single day, I would type "old pine", "English pine", "pitch pine" in their search engine, keeping my fingers crossed.

Until one day, I noticed among the ads one for a china hutch.... And it was like going back in time (I know that's twice in one post), it was the hutch I had been dreaming about when I was a young student in Paris! At the corner of the street I lived in was a store that sold old English reedition furniture. I spent so much time to drool over that simple, but too expensive for me hutch! And there it was in an add, at a very reasonable price, in a nearby seaside town...

I still had one problem, always the same one: how could a china hutch fit in my tiny car? I phoned the seller. He had a way to deliver the hutch to Cottage... We agreed that he would come the next Saturday.

That day I was as excited as a kid on Christmas day and I kept going to the front gate to see if the hutch was coming. At some point, a fishmonger truck stopped in front of the gate, I ran outside: "you can't stay there, I'm waiting for someone to deliver me a hutch."

"Well, I am the one delivering the hutch!"

All I can tell you is even if the hutch smelled of fish for a whole week, I was totally in love with it for the moment it arrived at Cottage. It was perfectly English-y, Cottage-y, not shiny at all and was exactly the one I had dreamed about when I was a young student.

All I had to do was to remove the little curtains the previous owers had put behind the glass doors, apply some bee wax and everything was perfect in my perfect Cottage... Not!

Once the hutch showed its gorgeous old blonde pine, my table looked all the more yellowish and shiny. I had to do something!

Without tablecloth... Sans nappe...
See you soon to tell you  what I've done,

PS1: As I'm a bad blogger, I didn't take any picture of my epic fall in the school corridor. So I replaced them by pictures of a beautiful and huge birds that often spends its afternoon in the fields behind Cottage. I think it's a heron and I call him Gaston.

PS2: As I'm a bad blogger, and a busy teacher, I won't have time for a fall decor post, so please notice that I tried to find autumn-y dishes to put in my hutch before I took pictures... That's all the fall you'll see in the Cottage this year, I'm afraid... Other falls happens at school ;)

PS3: I have a feeling the last picture doesn't really show the difference between the wood of the hutch and the wood of the table, but trust me it's there!

PS4: I'm trying to come back to some of my favourite parties:
