Holding On And Letting Go...

The Kitchen Glass Cabinet Series - 2

Cottage and I had decided on having some glass cabinets in our kitchen. Little did we know it would be that difficult!

None of the kitchen designer had glass cabinets I liked.

Aucun cuisiniste n'en proposait qui me plaisait.

Somehow, I thought they lacked charm. When I told the kitchen designer that, he told me he could make small pane doors to add some charm for some added euros! I was thrilled... I love that look so much!

But when he showed me what his small pane doors looked like, I was very disappointed, they were not light and airy like I had envisionned them. What was the point in spending more money if I didn't like the look?

I told him I'll think about it for a while.

I went back to Pinterest to dream about beautiful pictures...That's when I noticed that many of the pictures I had pinned actually had a plain glass cabinets, but had wooden shelves instead of the glass ones I had seen in the shop... The wooden shelves were what added charm...

I went back to the kitchen designer. I wanted to know what would be the extra cost if I kept his usual plain glass door, but chose wooden shelves inside... He had a hard time understanding the look I wanted, so I actually opened my Pinterest account on his computer!

It turned out there would be no extra cost since wooden shelves are actually cheaper than glass ones (he didn't offer a discount, though).

But when the kitchen was done, it turned out they had forgotten the shelves and the doors! So the kitchen was left with a big hole for a while...

A month later, my phone rang: they were finally going to deliver the shelves and the doors. Here's what was delivered!

The very chunky window pane doors with glass shelves...

To be fair, it wasn't horrible at all, but it wasn't what I had chosen... And it made the top shelf that I had intended to use as a display shelf useless... Since you couldn't really see anything... I decided to hold on to my choice and have them remake the doors and shelves.

Last Monday morning, six months after the kitchen was done, they finally delivered wooden shelves and clear glass doors.

I just adore how it makes the room more airy and how it allows the inside of the cabinet to show more.

Now there is a problem and don't tell me you didn't notice... The glass doors aren't the same white as the others. I can't understand how this is possible as I chose their basic white. I could cry, really.

A little blurry because dark was coming.

I keep telling myself there are worse things in life and that I'll get used to it. I even brew some delicious afternoon tea to make myself feel better...

A Royal Albert teacup I found last summer at an empty-your-attic sale.

I must tell you, I feel actually a little better now that I talked with you. Somehow I felt guilty about that mistake, when I have nothing to do with it. But I think I felt guilty to be the only blogger that can't manage to have a perfect home.

But you know what, flaws or not, Cottage and I have come such a long way from where we began that my heart still skips a beat when I come inside the kitchen when it's getting dark and it feels so cosy and serene now. So I think, I'll just let it go about the doors...

If you have any advice, I'm all ears!

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: I'm going to show the kitchen designer those pictures this afternoon, not that I have any hope that he'll do something, but it'll be good having that off my chest.

PS2: The experience has convinced me of one thing. I'm doing all the painting from now, including bathroom vanities and bookshelves - if that ever happen!

PS3: The source for the inspiration picture is on my Pinterest board.

PS4 : I'm sharing my story at some pity parties...

  1. Honestly, you probably wouldn't be one of my favorite bloggers if you were striving for a perfect home. I think we all need to get over ourselves a bit and realize how good we have it. That's not an admonishment for you, Magali, but for all of us. I get tired of seeing 'perfect' homes and reading people who try to present the image that their lives and homes are perfect. I like seeing and reading real people, real homes, and yours is absolutely lovely. You'll continue to be one of my favorite bloggers. (Hugs to you).

  2. No home is perfect, as no owner is perfect and definitely no handyman is perfect especially those making kitchens for some reason all over the world! I know I have had an adventure with them years ago!AriadnefromGreece!

  3. Yup, I agree. I find 'perfect' homes and 'perfect' blogs a little boring to be honest. Your kitchen is so pretty, Magali. It was worth the wait.

  4. I really love those glass doors!!! I am so glad you aren't at my "perfect" house right now.....lol You'd have to trip your way through the front door.

  5. If it is truly a problem for you, Magali, I would definitely show him the mistake about the paint and ask for at least a refund on part of the price. Please do not wish for a perfect kitchen - every room and every person need a little quirk or two. I think I would choose a paint one or two tones different and paint the new doors. Just to make them special.

  6. I love the look of your simple glass front cabinet doors, Magali! I can't believe what a difference there is between the first doors they installed and the doors you have now! If it were me, I wouldn't be able to settle for anything less than what I spent my hard earned money on. I think once the kitchen designer takes a good look at the finish of those doors, he'll do right by you and replace them or have them repainted to match the rest of your cabinetry. I had to have the installers come back 3 times before they finally installed my countertops the right way!

I know just how you feel about all the perfect homes out there. In "blog time" it seems like the progress in our old house is moving at a snail's pace. I sometimes have to step away from blogs and just appreciate our house for what it is, warts and all. Your home is charming and you should be proud of what you've done! Enjoy your lovely kitchen!

  7. Magali, I love them! And it was definitely worth the six months to get the right shaped window! No home is perfect, especially not old ones, and that's why yours is so charming. (Maybe the paint just needs to cure.) I have a crooked wall in my kitchen; the outside walls of the main house are cement block/brick and it bulges in. It's where the high counter is. They had to scribe the cabinet to fit, so the footed cabinet gets slightly narrower at the bottom.

  8. You can't tell they're a different colour in your photos. You could always add a glazed finish to those glass doors, or a dark paste wax to make them really stand out and look antique. Or just leave them be, they're so pretty!!! What a battle to get them though!

and thank God for Pinterest! lol

  9. Okay, first of all I love the doors and the wood shelves were the right choice and the glass panels are gorgeous. Your kitchen is sooo perfect in my mind. I love character in a home and yours is oozing with it. A perfect home is probably, and not in my opinion at all.....those terrible "model" homes that you see. Yikes, if that is perfection then leave me out. ;)
Now, as for the doors. I would definitely tell them. First off, they need to deal with the issue given that you paid them for the same colour as your existing cabinets. What will they do? I am not sure but at least you should hear what they suggest. It may be a discount, which they, as a business would need to absorb or they may suggest painting them for you. Either way, if it was me, I would go find out.
In the meantime, things are looking beautiful chez toi.

  10. I can feel your frustration, Magali. It really shouldn't have to be this difficult, right? Your new doors do look fantastic - you made a great choice!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Magali! Firstly, I did not actually notice that the new doors were a different color, because I was so taken up with being amazed at how much better they look than the doors with the small panes and the glass shelves!! It's amazing what a difference having the full glass doors and wood shelves makes to the whole look, just amazing! I don't know that I would ever have figured that out, but it's spectacular!! Well done!!
Now that you mention it, though, I do see that it's a different color. Is it possible, as someone else noted, that the color might need to cure or something? The other cupboards have been there for six months (!!!) now, so maybe they have changed a bit in that time? I have no idea. Anyway, they should make it right, it's just bizarre beyond belief that you should have to wait six months for their standard doors with wood shelves. I hate to suggest this, but it's a thing that happens, so maybe it's happening to you-is it possible they are treating you badly because you are a single woman? Do they treat everyone this way? If they do, then I'm surprised they are still in business, but if they don't, could that be it? If so, do you have any male friends or relatives that could stand up for you?
Lastly, I am just stunned at what you have done with cottage in your time there! Cottage is like a different person than when you moved in, like Cinderella! No matter what happens with these doors, cottage looks like a dream come true, really! Will you post some pictures of the whole kitchen now that it is completely done? I would love to see those!
Oh, also, what would happen if you painted these doors the same color as the backsplash? I can't picture it for sure, but if they won't do anything about their error and it continues to bug you, it's another thought, I can't quite picture how it would look but it's a thought….

  12. Dear Magali,
your kitchen is most beautiful, you have solved all those problems in the best possible ways. I think, you should ask them to adjust the colour, it would be such a pity otherwise. On the other hand - after a while you won´t notice it any more with all those wonderful dishes and details all around. How long it takes to make such an old house nice and cosy again! I am quite content - perhaps we have found a really good and reliable carpenter this weekend!
    Have a nice week!
    Yours, Sarah

  13. The only blogger without a perfect home - no, I am on your side of the line. I get one thing done and something else falls apart.

I love the glass doors. I want them on our cabinets, but there are other things much higher on the priority list - someday!

    Your kitchen is looking wonderful!!!

  15. I am so not about "perfect" homes, find it rather boring! I do love your glass doors. I have two cabinets with etch glass on ours....and the glass does provide a more open feel. I love your blog/home because it is not perfect...just the way I like it!

  16. I'm not into perfect homes either and I love for the home to reflect the owner's style and personality. I think yours does just that! I love the new doors and I honestly didn't notice the different color. You could always paint them a slightly different shade or color and draw attention to them, but I think they look lovely as is! I love your little cottage and always enjoy seeing what new additions you have to share. Have a wonderful week

    Hugs, Vicky

  17. I understand your disappointment, but your kitchen is beautiful. The color difference is hardly noticeable in pictures, but I am sure that it is frustrating in person. It is a nice cabinet though. I am glad they replaced the doors and shelves, because they look a lot better now.

  18. Oh, it is difficult when you have a certain 'vision' and you can't make it happen exactly the way you envision it, but these little inconsistencies are what makes a true 'cottage' style, I believe. My husband and I build our home ourselves and every thing did come out just a little different than the vision, but that is what gives it the quirky charm of home. That is what makes it unique and truly your own. No other cottage has the same.... Maybe you can get it fixed, but if not, I say live with it and learn to love it because it adds a suggestion of character over time. I would never have even noticed if you hadn't pointed it out. xo Karen

  20. These doors and shelves are so beautiful I didn't notice the paint difference but it would probably bug me that I didn't get what I paid for. The one thing that blogging has taught me is that decorating my home is a process to be enjoyed. I doubt we will ever live in a "finished" house. Right now I have no base boards in half of the house, crown molding that needs to go up in the master bedroom, molding around the front door that needs painting and curtains that need hemming. But if all that was done I would just start another project.
I love the doors so keep up the great work you are doing on the Cottage.

  21. hello Magali

  22. Cottage looks pretty perfect to me! But houses - older ones in particular - are constant projects! As for your silly kitchen designer - get them to put it right so that you are happy about it.

Bises. Babette

  25. I think your new cabinet is perfect, it's just like the one of the choices I picked and I am sooo glad you didn't choose the divided windows because the look like someone is TRYING to make something look old, whereas the large pane windows do look old and personally, glass shelves look the same way. It's the older homes with large panes and wooden shelves that look authentic, have character, and fits in your home so well. When you don't have anything else to do..haha...you can paint the cupboard if you really need to. Your whole kitchen looks so lovely!!

    1. Thank you so much, Liz. I'm trying to keep a balance between Cottage, who is an old man, and me, who is definitely a modern girl. We don't want things to be too modern: they would be out of place in here, but we don't want them to be artificially old either. I'm going to let some time pass by and then maybe I'll decide to paint that cabinet.

  26. The glass doors add such charm to your lovely kitchen! I feel your disappointment, though. Having spent the past one and a half years in a kitchen renovation, I still don't have my island top and new cook top. I had hoped for it before Thanksgiving, but now I'm not sure it will be here before Christmas! Sigh! We did have several mistakes, and my husband and I knew that if they were not corrected, we would be upset every time we saw them. I know, from building our house, there are things we still comment about twenty years later: "I sure wish I had told them to fix that!" So I vote for you telling your cabinet man that it still isn't right and you want it corrected. From the picture on my screen, the color differentiation isn't showing up, but it does look like the new glass cabinets have some wood grain showing through. Good luck!

  27. Perfection is over rated. Perfection lacks character and interest. This is one reason why I love old world homes so much. They have that wonderful quirkiness I love. Your cottage is adorable and you've done a wonderful job with your kitchen. I can't tell the difference in the white paint on my computer, but I do think the new cabinets should match the existing, and if it were me I would mention it to the cabinet maker and see what he says. I guess I'm just one of those people that feels you should get what you pay for. In the event that he doesn't make it right I'd live with it for awhile and talk to Cottage. You'll either learn to love it as it is, or you'll come up with a solution that will be amazing. I do love the style of the new cabinet. You were so right to go with that. xxx ~ Nancy

  28. Perfection is only defined by you, if you and Cottage agree that the grainy cabinets complement the others, great. On the other hand, if you cringe every time you look at the mismatched whites, (which, btw, cannot be seen on my screen), then set things straight with your carpenters! Personally, I feel a sense of calm when things are pretty, but not perfect - a dainty dent, a subtle scratch, even a few markings which bring back memories of their creation, are, for me, quaint and charming.

Your kitchen is beautiful and cozy; wish I could sit a spell with you over a hot cup of tea, and analyze aesthetics and other such design dilemmas!

    Happy Monday!

  29. Magali, your kitchen is gorgeous. I really like these doors much better than the paned doors that they delivered first. Why not paint the outside trim on the doors the same color as your backsplash? That could look like a design choice rather than a mistake. Your backsplash color is so soft and pretty that it couldn't hurt to see more of it in your kitchen. You always figure out the best for you so I know this time will be no different. Can't wait to see your next project!

I can't believe how long it has taken them. However, your kitchen is beautiful and everything looks just right x

  31. The colour change could be due to a different dye lot, or the slight variance from one paint mix to another. Perhaps it could be that your cabinets have aged a bit and the new ones will also tone a bit too. They look fabulous and the wood shelves with the clear glass is, I think, a classic. It is what I chose as well. Your kitchen is cottage perfect! Patty/NS

  32. I think you totally made the right choice on the style of the glass cabinet doors, the glazing bars were just too big in the first doors. As for the colour difference, like a lot of people said, I didn't notice it till you pointed it out. I think you're doing the right thing, by telling the kitchen company, but your kitchen doesn't need to be perfect because it's perfectly gorgeous. I can imagine that feeling when you walk into your kitchen every morning, because I have that still, when I walk into my bathroom.

I did not notice the color difference, but I know it'll be hard for you not to see it every time you're in your kitchen, I think you should paint it seaglass blue and have it be purposely different. Course, I am not sure how that would work and it might be worse....and if so, you cannot blame me, it wasn't my idea. Nope. :)

ok. The doors... I think you are wise not to jump into a decision when you are upset... With that said... Yes, I do see a difference in color, and I personally would have him come back and look at it.. If he is a professional and can see that there is a definite color difference, he will correct it. It is just not right for you to put out hard earned money and not have what you ordered. In the end, life is not perfect....So let us celebrate what you love

The wood shelves make all the difference, and although I can barely notice the difference in color, to me it's not about perfection but about what YOU want and what you paid for. If it bothers you even a tiny bit, call the designer and see what they can do.

  46. I can so identify with you Magali! Just finishing our kitchen renovation there were so many issues with quality. We have under cabinet lighting and also lighting in the two glass front cabinets; some of the lighting had a blue hue and some a pink. The cabinet maker insisted he couldn't see the difference! (everyone else could) We did have that corrected but there were many things we had to just accept. Glad you stuck to your original order on the cabinet style, love them. Your kitchen looks amazing, even with a little color difference. I love your cottage kitchen in your little white house on the seaside!

  48. Good idea to show the designer your Pinterest boards. It's hard to see the difference between the cabinets on my screen, but I certainly understand your frustration. I'm sorry it took so long to get the doors and shelves installed...I sure wouldn't be happy about that. Like the idea of painting them a completely different color. Thanks for sharing at VIP.

  49. I'm glad you got the plain glass with the wood shelves. You should get what you like and I love the look you chose. I would not have noticed the off color if you hadn't mentioned it.

  50. I'm sorry for you distress ... but really your kitchen is so lovely and light...If the doors are wrong ... It is your right to have what you ordered... However, I must say that I like an eclectic looking home ..( Mixmatched) They just seem a little cosier and real . I have a Victorian and the costs for new cupboards were going to be so unbelievable that I decided to mix and match..Well , I'm so happy to have varied tones of wood in the kitchen ..It just adds a perspective of reality to who we really are..Nothing is perfect , except in your own minds eye.. So breathe , stand back and Love your beautiful vision... You have created a gorgeous kitchen.

  51. My Dearest Magali!!!!

How can something so simple turn into such a nightmare? It was like you were speaking another language!!!

You're kitchen is so unique and so beautiful, like yourself!!! One day you'll look back when your beautiful cottage will be featured in a magazine and recall all the tests that it put you through!!! I know you won't do this, but, if it was me I would paint the new doors a very soft pink. It would just pop out at you guests and be beautiful!!!

I'm so glad that you have a great following!!! These ladies have all gone through something or other redoing their homes and maybe can give you some great advice.

Have a great weekend Sweet Lady!!!

  52. Oh Magali, I feel for you I really do. I wonder if they will change colour when they are there for six months!? In any case, they look really beautiful. I think you made the right choice sticking to your guns and waiting for the doors you originally wanted. They look quite similar to mine actually, great taste Magali!

  53. I'm not disappointed at all. Everything turned out great with the combination of glass and solid doors. I do understand about the chunkier panes and not being able to display on the shelves like you wanted to. At first I didn't notice the color difference but I looked again and saw the slight difference. I do hope he was able to correct.
I'm getting more caught up on my blog reading. YAY
