Blank Canvas

The Kitchen Cabinet Reveal

Many of you sent me messages to tell me you wanted to see the cabinets and some doubted I would show them soon because I'm known for keeping my readers waiting.

Well, not this time! I'm showing you today the kitchen as it looks now that the cabinets are there, but to me it's in no way a kitchen reveal, it's only a cabinet reveal.

I took the pictures after the handyman left and I had cleaned a bit, but as you can see nothing except Shadow's litter was back... I wanted you to see the blank canvas I now get to have fun with.

Can you see the empty cabinet between the two upper cabinets? It's supposed to be a glass door cabinet, but when it arrived the doors and the shelves were not how I wanted them, but the right ones should be there next week.

I kept the vintage looking sink I had found last summer, but I had the tap changed. This one is easier to use and I think it still has a vintage look thanks to the porcelain handle.

As you can see on pictures, I have many paint touch ups to do, but I guess it'll have to wait for the summer.

You may remember that I didn't like that the previous countertop piece I had was in front of the window. So I had the new one cut in a diagonal after the sink.

On the other side of the room, I don't have upper cabinets, except for one custom-made to hide the electrical panel (I hope this is the right word). It'll be my job to find storage solutions that are pretty, if possible.

The oven is switched on because it said to switch it on for an hour before using it. But I can't wait to try new recipes with it.

So, I don't know about you, but I don't like those pictures very much. It's just very cold and soulless and not me at all. But it's a great blank canvas for me to add my personal touches: transforming that very store-like kitchen into a perfect Cottage kitchen.

For this reveal, you're going to have to wait a little! But you can understand why I needed to add very quickly my vintage coffee grinder on that countertop!

In a future post, I'll try to explain where I decided to spend money and where I saved some in that kitchen floor plan, so maybe it'll help someone who has a small kitchen.

I already have tons of ideas on how to add character and soul to the kitchen. Do you have any?

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: It took Cottage and I five days to get used to the new look of the kitchen. Now we love and we might drink coffee (yes, my lousy one) together at 10 am in the kitchen, just to admire it!

PS2: The first batch of cookies baked in the new oven were rather burnt, because it heats so much better than my former small one... Please be patient, I'll share recipes again when I have become this baby's master!

PS3:  I'm partying at some awesome parties!

  3. I really love your white cabinets against your sea glass paint. Very pretty and so calming! I would definitely spend a morning drinking cafe' in there with you, petting le chat. haha. Do you like that I interject my French whenever I can. I do not want a mustard and salt sandwich, though. You definitely need to decorate with your beautiful china.

  4. I love it! Magali, the cabinets are so pretty and well made, and they look pretty with the paint color you chose for the walls. I love that you kept the vintage sink that you found, and I love the faucet you chose; it's perfect together! Is the refrigerator built into the tall cabinet, or is that where the panel went? I like that look. Does your washer/dryer do both? Wash and dry? It's a very spacious kitchen now! I can't wait to see the glass doors and your decor! It will look even more cozy once you bring in some of your pretty dishes, fruit, and decor. xoxo

  6. It is going to be fantastic when you make it your own. I love the layout and the cabinets look so cottagey and beautiful. That window is spectacular - you are going to have so much fun decorating this space!!!

  7. Dear Magali,

this is the most wonderful background for all those very special things and bits you are going to ad! The cupboards are very beautiful! The only thing, I am not shure about, are the wooden knobs, but this will look different, when cou have put in all the china and so on. The porcelain handle is perfect and the lamp ads the first personal touch. In the end it will be amazing and the coffee will taste heavenly....

  8. Shreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!! It's SO FAB!!!!! So MUCH storage!! So much space!!! Such lovely colors!!! It doesn't look like a small kitchen anymore! Can you post a pic sometime from the dining room so we can see the hanging lamp against the new cupboards and paint and the lovely window? I can not tell you how wonderful this is and how inspiring! I can't wait to see your lovely rose china in there! Oh GOSH!!!

  9. Wait, I just read what Heather said. Mustard and salt sandwich? Is that a thing?

  10. Plus, I love how you had a special little space put in for the trash can. So smart! I love the whole thing! OK, I'll try to be quiet now.

  11. Yes, I agree with the other readers: FAB Cuisine! I, however, would never have my cat's litter box in the kitchen - his is in my bathroom (french would say les toilettes). You will have so much fun filling all of that cupboard space! Yes, electric panel is exactly right wording - my father was an electrician! Your china will add a lot of interest! That vintage sink and the diagonal cut were great ideas! I'm really loving the transformation!

    1. I understand perfectly... If the Cottage and its bathroom were a bit larger, I'd have found an other solution. However only one of the cats uses this litter and only when I go to work and at night (when he's not allowed outside).
Thank you so much for your kind words about my kitchen!

  12. Oh Magali...I love it! I simply cannot wait to see how you warm it up. I have a small kitchen too and this gives me hope that I can eventually turn mine into a room as bright and lovely as yours! I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do to it. I am envisioning some chunky, natural wood open shelves on that wall by the one upper cabinet to the right of the window. I love wood mixed with white...:) Have fun!

    Blessings, Vicky

You've done a fabulous job of making the most of the space without making it feel cluttered and overwhelmed. 22. Magali, your cabinets are beautiful. The wall color and the white cabinets look so serene together. My only question is where is the refrigerator? I don't see it anywhere. So glad you shared the kitchen at this stage, I can't wait to see it all charmed up.

  27. Woweeee, thanks for revealing the cabinets !
As Donna says, it now has great bones. The sea glass shows up more against the white cabinets, I love the layout and the way the worktop has a corner cut off by the window. Also the new tap is lovely and the whole room looks larger . You must be pleased, after waiting so long.
I can't wait to see how you dress it, though I can already see how great the chair will look by the window and I'm wondering about that wall light you talked of.
Congratulations to you and Cottage, on the big change !

  29. Hi Magali! It all looks wonderful and I can just imagine how you will add all the details to make your new kitchen look like an original but improved part of "Cottage"! As someone about to embark on the kitchen renovation journey, I'm full of admiration for your thorough research & planning to get it 'just right'. I look forward to reading all about how you saved/splurged to get the look without breaking the bank! Well done!

  38. Love that faucet. The coffee grinder reminds me of one that my mom had...she bought it at an antique store years ago. There was also a little cast iron stove...how I loved to play with that ( even though I was not supposed to : )
As to small kitchens, mine's a galley...about 8 x 12! :) It will be fun to see this as you go along.
