Once Upon A Time

Watching TV With Magali (And Possibly Some Cats) - February 2015

January has been a very trying month. When reality gets tough, it's necessary, I believe, to escape it every now and then, not because we don't want to accept it, but because it helps us reload our batteries.

The escaping takes different forms for each of us: to some chocolate, to others ice-cream, to some of my neighbours  running (I see them passing by my kitchen window), I'm sure some thing of shopping as a great way to forget their problems. To me, it's fiction.

In case of intensive stress, I need fiction (created by words or images - or both) to escape reality for a while and to feel all rejuvenated to confront said reality. In January, it took the form of a Once Upon A Time marathon at Cottage.

If you're new here, I have to warn you: I mostly watch shows for the sets. I usually find them more inspiring than huge designer pictures.

I actually don't watch Once Upon A Time for the sets... I know, you don't believe me... I actually began watching four years ago when I was working on fairy tales for a group of pupils I had. But well, I did pay a little attention to the sets.

The first set I'm sure everyone here will love as much as me is Mr Gold's shop: it's a pawn shop and I never understand the scenes that are shot on this set because I spend my time looking at all the objects behind the actors!

Next, I'm taking you to visit the mayor's home office. Her whole house is interesting, but her office is very well decorated as it sticks to white and black, which is perfect for her complex personality that navigates between good and bad all the time.

There are thousand things to notice in every shot, like the wallpaper that represents tree trunks so her office reminds you of the wood she chased Snow White in (the mayor is the Evil Queen) or the fact that the only colour appearing is due to some red apples.

Speaking of apples, the mayor/Evil Queen sometimes bakes... Only apple pies, apple turnovers, you get the thing... in a gorgeous light grey kitchen with the best ever chandelier, the best ever sconces and lots of knives (could be useful because you have ennemies when you're evil).

Now what would you say of getting into a vintage-shabby-industrial loft? Yes! Hum? What? The post is too long and your life doesn't revolve around my blog? Well, I guess you'll have to come back next time for the vintage-shabby-industrial loft, then!

Maintenant, direction un loft vintage-shabby-industriel ! C'est parti ! Quoi ?

Did you notice anything weird or interesting in Mr Gold's shop?

See you soon for the next part,

A bientôt pour la deuxième partie,

  1. Dear Magali,
I have never heard of this film. But perhaps an evil witch (or sorcerer) is working in that building agency causing you so much trouble? Charm won´t help, not that sort of charm... Nevertheless I hope you enjoy sitting in your bewitching dining room or baking in your most charming kitchen. Happy Valentine!
    Yours Sarah

  2. fantasy! fairy tales! sets! oh my, here we go again. synchrinosity! :-)))))

film/tv sets! they are the most important part!!! I have even tried to sketch out on paper, the layout of favorite book or film, or tv show sets. I am totally hooked, on "the background."

haven't watched "OUAT" in a while. it might be a grand idea, to rent seasons, which we missed. and enjoy them, at leisure.

now to visit your TV Show Inspiration page!!!

    :-))))))))))))

oh and I am sorry that life had you in need of diversion. and hope that life has righted itself, by now. hugsss....

  4. Sarah Turkey Plate here again! I love how your last post was about a land without magic and in this post you have successfully inserted magic back into your life! Plus, I want the vintage industrial loft now!! Now, now!!
Ok…I'll wait. Anyway, the shop is wonderful, I see many things I am interested in, two of them that stand out are that lamp with the bright green glass shade to the viewers left of the puzzled blond lady. I just love the way the light glows through that green shade. Also, whatever those blue glass things are hanging from the ceiling, I can't really tell what they are, but they look fun. And additionally, everyone should have a nice vintage globe around the house, right? I have never watched this show, but you know what I'll be doing tonight, right? :)
Can't wait for the vintage industrial loft, but I will!!

    1. Sarah,

The blue thing that are hanging from the ceiling are originally a baby mobile Snow White had put in her future child's bedroom.

And there are vintage globes in each house on this show, not sure why since most places are fictive; but there's one in the loft... I'll try to find time during the weekend to write this post ;)

  5. Hi again, Sarah Turkey Plate here. I forgot to ask, do you watch Grimm? I did not like season one, and have actually never gotten all the way through it, but half way through season two, it becomes a very good show for me, and the sets are splendid! I LOVE the house where Juliette and Nick live, especially the KITCHEN and I LOVE the tea shop, and the trailer (minus the weapons) and the house where Rosalee and Monroe live is just charming, especially the outside and when decorated for holidays! Also, I think, the back garden? And they use one house repeatedly for crime scenes, and it has the most amazing light fixtures I have ever seen. Also, the show is shot in Portland, Oregon, which is a very lovely town, and they make the most of it. So, if you haven't seen that you might check it out, but don't start with season one, is my recommendation. I actually started with season three, and then worked backwards, and that worked great. xoxo!

    1. I did watch the beginning of season 1 because it was based on fairy tales, but it seemed really dark and I stopped. Now, if you tell me the set is great, I'll have to give it an other try!

  6. Dear Sarah,
I find myself doing the same thing... I love the sets in films... This particular one has so many things to look at it is mind boggling.. Love it!
    Happy Valentin's Day

  7. I most definitely watch shows for the sets. That's what has me watching Downton Abbey and other period dramas. I can see getting into this for that reason. Don't know which thing you're referring to as odd in the shop, but I'd get rid of that bright yellow lamp. lol Have a wonderful Valentine's Day.

  8. I haven't been to a film in over 12 years, I have a sensitivity to sound where I can't be in loud places. But I do watch shows to see how they are decorated, one gave me the paint color inspiration for the outside of our house. Several I just drool over because no way would I be able to recreate at the Charmer, like Downtown Abbey. I hope with each passing hour it becomes less trying for you.

  9. I've never watched this but I think I'd like to. The sets intrigue me, but I do get lost in the story, immersing myself in a programme is the thing that relaxes me. I've been watching Pride and Prejudice over and over again, maybe because it's Valentines, I don't know !
Vintage shabby industrial loft - sounds great. Enjoy the rest of the weekend x

  10. I watched the first two seasons and then became enamored of another show. Love the bloopers. Once every two weeks I get together some kind of lap work and watch a marathon of certain shows. It does recharge me.

  16. I watched the entire first season and just loved it and then....I just got busy. I will have to see if the later seasons are on Netflix. THank you for the reminder.

  18. I've never watched Once Upon a Time and actually, I don't watch much TV at all. But I know what you mean about loving certain sets. I do that with movies. The cottage in The Holiday and the kitchens in Julie and Julia and It's Complicated? *swoon*

  21. Magali, you helped to make my day! I am totally in love with fiction especially fantasy. I have a huge library of these books, and Once Upon a Time is one of my favorites, next to Reign and Vikings. I just have to say ditto to your post today. When I need to zone it is usually through a book. Right now I am just finishing reading a lovely novel about Santa Claus, lol, no kidding it is the second time. The Gift - a high adventure Christmas fairy tale - by William Craig. I got it on Amazon. It's only 729 pages but it's a fun read. Thanx for sharing you fun post today! Have a marvelous week. ~hugs Jo

  23. I think the reason behind everything I enjoy watching, television (not much there) or movies has a lot to do with sets and costumes. One of my favorites, Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Theatre comes on tonight and I love the costumes and of course peeks of Highclere Castle. I'm not familiar with Once Upon A Time but I understand how you can use it to relax.
    Enjoyed the tour.............

  27. My husband and I are currently in the middle of a Downton Abbey marathon. We have been ill and recovering so we have watched almost all of the available episodes. Now I do watch partial for the sets of this fantastic show, that and the clothes. Escapism is a wonderful thing from time to time.

  30. I've never seen the show, but it looks like a fun show to "escape" with. I tried to figure out what was weird in the shop, but I gave up:) My husband likes to watch old movies for the sets.

  31. See, this is why I can watch "The Holiday" over and over and over again. I just adore Iris' Cotswold Cottage. It's not about the storyline. . .it's about the house! :)
