A Little Kitchen Update
Can you believe I still have projects for the kitchen ? Well, believe it or not, I do.
Si je vous dis que j'ai encore un petit projet cuisine à vous montrer, vous y croyez ?
When I showed my kitchen reveal, many of my readers loved the two little wood cabinets I had thrifted and used as upper cabinets, both to save money (a lot cheaper than ordering cabinets matching the rest of the kitchen and to add charm and warmth to a white room.
Quand j'ai montré ma cuisine terminée (enfin, presque, du coup), vous avez peut-être remarqué deux petits placards en pin que j'avais achetés pour trois fois rien et qui m'ont permis d'économiser par rapport à la commande de meubles hauts assortis au reste de la cuisine et d'ajouter un peu de charme et de chaleur dans ma pièce.
A few comments noticed that only one of the cabinets had hooks to hand cups and suggested to do the same on the second cabinet. I thought it was a brilliant idea!
Quelques-uns, dans leurs commentaires, m'ont recommandé d'ajouter sur le deuxième placard les mêmes crochets que sur le premier. J'ai trouvé que c'était une super idée !
And then time was spent planning the upstairs renovation - choosing the windows, finding the perfect insulation and so on...
Puis, le temps a passé, j'ai été bien occupée à organiser la rénovation de l'étage - choisir des fenêtres, trouver l'isolant parfait et tout et tout...
Then things calmed down and I decided that there would be no huge projects in 2016. Not that there aren't any big projects left to do, but I needed a year when I don't have to pack all the house in boxes again!
Les choses se sont un peu calmées et j'ai décidé que 2016 ne verrait pas de gros projets au Cottage. Ce n'est pas, cependant, qu'il n'y en ait pas encore plein à faire, mais une année sans avoir à mettre toute la maison en cartons pour l'été me fera du bien.
The teacup hooks? Perfect small project to begin the year!
Et mes crochets pour tasses à thé ? Le parfait petit projet pour commencer l'année !
I bought hooks matching the ones on the first cabinet, measured the length of the cabinet and made a quick division, then I drilled the hooks right in. And voilà! (said with the perfect French accent)
Et j'ai acheté des crochets ressemblant à ceux que j'avais déjà, j'ai mesuré mon meuble, fait une petite division, j'ai vissé, et voilà !
For now, I've displayed there my everyday cups, the one that are dishwasher safe, because I love the white china (they are "Porcelaine de Sologne" cups) contrasts softly with the seaglass green of the backsplash.
Pour l'instant, j'y accroche mes tasses à thé "de tous les jours", celles de mon service en porcelaine de Sologne, que j'ai commencé à collectionner quand j'avais mon petit studio d'étudiante à Paris. J'aime bien la fraîcheur du blanc sur le lambris vert-verre poli par la mer.
But of course, as you know, I own a lot of teacups and can change whenever I want. Speaking of, don't you think a cup of tea is a great idea? It's rather cold this week. Now, please don't laugh at me, but cold here on the seaside is somewhere around 40°F. You should see all of us Britons wrapped under layers and layers as if we were living on the North pole! It's been two days of this cold and we can't stand it anymore...
Bien sûr, comme vous le savez, j'ai des collections et des collections de tasses à thé et je pourrai changer quand l'envie me prendra. Justement, en parlant de tasses à thé, une tasse DE thé ne vous semblerait-elle pas une bonne idée. Parce que, vraiment, il fait super froid en ce moment. Petite explication pour les non-Bretons: super froid en bord de mer, cela veut dire environ 5°C (interdiction aux gens de l'est de se moquer, hein?) Bref, cela fait déjà deux jours que l'on est habillé comme si c'était le pôle Nord et on n'en peut plus !!!
Where was I? Oh, yes, cup of tea... Would you like having it in the dining-arrgghh, no, you could see the chairs in-painting... Let's have it elsewhere then.
Où en étais-je ? Ah, oui, la tasse de thé ! Venez donc dans la salle-à-ahhhaahh, non, vous risqueriez de voir mes chaises à moitié peintes !
The bedroom? It might be weird, but I've a little book&tea spot in my bedroom next to the new window for those grey winter days. Don't get your hopes all up, I took a close-up picture so you wouldn't see too much of this very unfinished space (and also chances are I hadn't made the bed the day I took the picture). But at least, you can see it's unfinished!
La chambre, alors ? Non, ce n'est pas une proposition indécente. J'ai installé un petit coin lecture près de la nouvelle fenêtre pour les journées grises d'hiver. Ne vous réjouissez pas trop, j'ai pris une photo où l'on ne voit pas grand chose, à part que la chambre n'est pas finie du tout. De toute façon, je suis sûre que comme d'habitude, le lit n'était pas fait ce jour-là !

Well it has an unfinished blue green on it now, but I just never finished it, and it has been on the floor of my porch for almost two months now and everyone has to watch out for it including the dogs. I don't know when I will finish. I hurt myself really almost doing nothing, but having the flu. xoox Su

I just love seeing pics of your kitchen and all it has gone through.
I have recently put a shelf up in the kitchen, with hooks for mugs! I found it in an antique sale in the village and am so pleased with it. Your cups look perfect.
ReplyDeleteUsing those cabinets was a great example of making lemonade out of lemons. The contrast is pretty, and it gives the kitchen interest (as do the mugs).

Mes meubles viennent d'un magasin breton. Je veux bien vous donner les coordonnées, mais je préfèrerais ne pas le faire sur le blog. Oh I love your kitchen ! I think even with remodeling, painting, and projects cluttering up your home it must be a very cozy place to have your tea and read a book, if you ever have tie for that with so much being done.

I so love your idea of placing these BEAUTIFUL but much more affordable cabinets in your kitchen. You saved money, you loaded up on THE CHARM and this calculated space helps you to keep things organized and SIMPLE. The "lack" of a lot of cabinet space is a GOOD thing because you keep what you need, but what you have is so charming and functional. Great ideas and great job, Magali!
ReplyDeleteHi Magali, we feel the cold when it gets below 70 where I live, it's Winter! But you're near the sea, damp feeling too. How wonderful to have a cozy reading and tea nooks with beautiful views. I so love your kitchen and adding the hooks for the cups adds to the charm.

Delete70 would feel like summer here! Brittany has little difference between winter and summer temperatures, but I like it that way, so I don't mind. One of the kitties is on my lap as I'm reading comments. He tries to type a few words sometimes!
Your teacups are the jewelry in your kitchen and you're going to have so much fun changing them up for the seasons, although your everyday white teacups look lovely hanging from the wood cabinet. I hope you're keeping warm! A 40 F day is like a spring day to me!

ReplyDeleteI love quick little projects like this that add even more charm to the kitchen! And here in southwest Florida, 60 degrees is cold!!! But I do enjoy the short change in the weather -- a break from the heat and humidity! Enjoy your cup of tea while I have my coffee!

Le froid, c'est fini chez nous aujourd'hui... Cela ne dure pas longtemps en Bretagne, mais la tasse de thé est demeurée de rigueur car il fait bien humide. J'espère que l'air chaud va arriver jusque chez toi pour le week-end!

I so am enjoying your beautiful home and story of your cottage transformation. You are my favorite blog and that reading/tea nook, bliss. I live in a much smaller studio cottage of less then 350 feet on the California Coast. Its not the grandeur of Little White House but its also cottage perfection in many way. Sorry I'm late to the tea, but blogging problems. Alas, I have figured out how to correct it but it will take a lot of my time! Now, about your beautiful kitchen, the cup hooks are darling and add a lot of charm to the cabinet, gives you more room. I like the idea of having everyday things close by and who doesn't love charming cups. Also wanted to comment on the tea pots on your shelf, love that display so much.
