Lady Marmalade

Kitchen Details - 2 -

When you have a kitchen with no storage like mine for now, you are always looking for things wondering where the hell you have had the idea to store them. Right now for example, I'm still trying to find the cashew nuts I bought earlier in the week for a curry recipe. If anyone has seen them, please tell me!

One thing that is really making me crazy is to not find a wooden spoon when I need one, which is every time I cook.

So I had the idea to put a utensil holder on the table I use to cook. Of course, as it is a temporary solution, I could have gone with an Ikea basic one.

But it didn't really look like me.

Mais cela ne me ressemblait pas beaucoup.

As you know, every Sunday, from spring to autumn, I go to the local empty-your-attic sales to find some treasures for me or the shop. One lucky Sunday, I bought this Le Creuset utensil holder.

Given how expensive they are when new, it was a great find... But it was red, when I was looking for either the white one, the black one or the blue one... Still, I knew my mom, who has red accents in her kitchen, would love it. Indeed, she did... But then I still didn't have one!

I try not to want everything I see on blogland, otherwise a) I would be ruined - b) all our houses would look the same. But there is something I fell in love with when seeing them popping on blogs.

Vintage Dundee marmalade jars. So, out of curiosity, I checked the website Le Bon Coin to see if someone was selling one. They weren't exactly cheap, but still a lot cheaper than a new Le Creuset utensil holder.

I just couldn't resist the lightly faded black marking, the creamy chunkiness... All that AND it was going to be useful? Who was I to say "no"?

As it sometimes happens, the person selling it was really nice and sent me a postcard of his area as I had sent a postcard of Brittany with my check.

Now, I find it so useful and beautiful that I think I'll keep it as a utensil holder when the kitchen is done. What do you think?

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: I found the cashew nuts in the fridge... I wonder how they arrived there, but anyway, I was able to try the curry recipe and I'll share it as soon as I can.

PS2: Thanks for all your messages, the eye is much better.

PS3: I'm partying with some of my favourite bloggers.

  4. Lovely.... and I lost my Pinterest account so now I don't have access to all the lovely kitchen pins I collected! I started up a personal account now but I'm tempted to go back to collecting paper! lol

    Happy Sunday Magali!

  5. The vintage jar is just the ticket. I had one years ago and don't know what ever happened to it.

Small kitchen and lack of counter space are a challenge. We have our utensils in a pitcher and all the knives hang on an IKEA magnetic strip on the wall so that they take up no space.

  7. I am so glad your eye is better, that kind of injury is SO. PAINFUL. Gosh. You are an inspiration! Also, how are the headaches? I worry about those, I'm sure they could be due to stress, but it seems like they should be evaluated if they go on.
OK, enough with the mom stuff.
Now, I love the marmalade jar. I love it as a utensil holder, I also love it holding flowers. Most elegant. I can't remember the last time I commented, so let me just say in case I didn't that I LOVE the wall color too! Your grandfathers picture will look lovely when it is hanging above the light switch where it belongs against the lovely paint. Also, what is the address and phone of the contractor who is making us all wait? Can we go camp in his front door till he agrees to finish you kitchen so we can see it? I volunteer to come to France and do that!!! I will look for one of those wonderful casserole things with the flowers on while I"m there. Hey!! speaking of that, you could start looking for one of those for me when you get the chance. That's exciting! Flowers, not cherubs please. Did I say that already? Who knows. Anyway, I guess I better get back to packing! If Magali can keep going with boiling essential oils in her eye, I can too!! :)

    1. I'm looking for an other marmalade jar to put flowers or herbs in them... But so far, I couldn't find an other one not too expensive. I keep my eyes wide opened in empty-your-attic sale for a flowery tureen for you and you'll be the first to know when I find one... But usually I find things when I don't look for them ;)
Good luck with all the packing. Be extra careful with the plates ;)

  8. My ex used to have the Ikea on and it was so annoying because teaspoons kept getting stuck through the holes.
Anyway, the marmalade jar is lovely and perfect for utensils. I also love the wine crate with herbs etc and that enamel holder I've seen before. I really can't wait to see everything in your new kitchen.
I'm also glad your eye is better, the doctor is clever AND sexy then !

  10. What a shame, I haven't storage in my kitchen yet. It's really confusing and so annoying. Hope I could order or buy the storage soon, so my kitchen will be better

  11. Dear Magali,

this utensil holder is great, I shall try to get one for our Old Cottage. Thanks for your kind words, the "little one" is ten, so this is still "little" to me and sometimes to her (Depends on the movies she wants to watch, the time, she ought to go to bed, and so on...) Cashews in the fridge are better than some italian gran padano not in the fridge, but underneath, believe me...
Have a nice week (another week closer to the kitchen cupboards...)
    Yours Sarah

    Bisous. Babette

    1. Thanks. As the cottage is small, I try to find things that are beautiful and useful at the same time.

  15. Yes! Keep the marmalade jar for your utensils, Magali. It will look great in your new kitchen. I LOVE Dundee marmalade jars. Loved them before they ever became popular (which shows how ancient I really am). :) ~ Nancy

    1. I don't know how we could resist those jars. I wanted some black accents in my kitchen and the writing on them is just perfect for that. Maybe you are a designer visionary!

  16. Love the black and white of old marmalade jars - clever solution to the Where-is-that question. You do not happen to know what I did with my whisk, do you? :>)
