Wandering Around Cottage - July 2018 Edition

I haven't left Cottage for my annual week of vacations yet, but I still have a few things from last year I haven't shared with you... So are you ready? I hope you didn't have a big meal just before opening this page and that you're not sea-sick because we need to take the boat for today's post!

Je n'ai pas encore quitté Cottage pour ma semaine de découverte de la Bretagne annuelle, mais j'ai dans mes réserves de quoi vous faire voyager aujourd'hui. J'espère que vous ne venez pas de faire un gros repas ou que vous n'avez pas le mal de mer, car il nous faut prendre le bateau.

When I showed you the beautiful cathedral of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, I told you it was dedicated to Saint Pol who had tamed a dragon that was terrorising the island of Batz. Today, we're hinking on the paths of this island.

Quand je vous ai emmené visiter la belle cathédrale de Saint-Pol-de-Léon, je vous ai appris que le saint auquel elle était dédié était célèbre pour avoir réussi à maîtriser un dragon qui terrorisait les habitants de l'île de Batz. C'est sur les chemins de cette île que je vous emmène aujourd'hui.

So let's say goodbye to the pretty town of Roscoff (on the above picture) where I took the boat. From the coast, it looks like the island is so close you could touch it. But the sea hides many danger and the boat actually can't go there on a straight line, so it takes about twenty minutes to reach it.

Disons un petit au-revoir à Roscoff (sur la photo ci-dessus) d'où j'ai pris le bateau. Depuis la côte, on a l'impression de pouvoir toucher l'île tellement elle est proche. Mais les fonds marins sont redoutables apparemment car le bateau fait un beau détour et il a fallu environ vingt minutes pour atteindre Batz.

Before you set foot on the island, I think it'd be appropriate that you knew how to pronounce its name (always a huge problem with Breton names). It's "ba" as in "Baa Baa Black Sheep". The "t" and the "z" are only here for the show!

Avant que vous ne posiez le pied sur cette île, il faut que vous sachiez prononcer son nom. C'est "ba". Le "t" et le "z" ne sont là que pour faire joli !

The coastline is absolutely breathtaking and altough there were lots of people as I visited in summer, it wasn't too crowded and I had some nice moments where  I could think myself the only human being on the island.

La côte est magnifique et bien qu'il y ait eu pas mal de monde car je m'y suis rendue en été, les chemins n'étaient pas non plus pleins de foule et il y a même eu des moments où j'ai pu me croire seule au monde sur cette île.

There is a path that goes all the way around the island. On one side, you have a beautiful view of the sea - you have to walk in the sand sometimes and it's good for your calves -  and the other is bordered by cultivated land or by pastures.

Un chemin fait tout le tour de l'île. D'un côté, il y a une belle vue sur la mer - ce qui nécessite parfois de marcher dans le sable, c'est bon pour les mollets - et l'autre côté est bordé par des terres cultivées ou des prairies.

What I found very interesting is that the cultivated land is still divided in small areas surrounded by hedges as it used to be everywhere in Brittany before World War II and the "remembrement". It keeps the land safe even when it rains... They removed the last hedge in the fields behind Cottage last winter and now every time there's a storm, there's a flood of mud in our street...

Ce que j'ai trouvé très intéressant est que le bocage a été sauvegardé sur l'île. Chaque parcelle cultivée, d'une taille raisonnable, est entourée d'une haie, comme c'était le cas partout en Bretagne avant le remembrement juste après la seconde Guerre mondiale. Cela permet de garder la terre en place quand il pleut. La dernière haie dans les champs derrière Cottage a été arrachée l'hiver dernier et depuis à chaque orage, il y a un fleuve de boue dans la rue...

I had intended to tour the whole island as the leaflet I had taken at the tourist information center said it was very doable... I guess it was only doable if you walk without stopping to admire the view and without visiting the beautiful exotic garden that's on the way. I did only half the island and it was already time for me to take the boat again.

J'avais pensé en partant faire le tour de l'île car d'après le dépliant que j'avais pris à l'office de tourisme, c'était faisable en une après-midi. Je crois que ce n'est faisable que si l'on ne s'arrête pas pour admirer la vue et si on ne visite pas longuement le beau jardin exotique que l'on croise en chemin. Je n'ai parcouru que la moitié est de l'île.

It was low tide when I came back to the harbour so the view was different and it was nice to admire the town of Roscoff from the sea.

C'était marée basse quand je suis arrivée au port en fin d'après-midi, ce qui donnait aux lieux un aspect différent. La vue de Roscoff depuis la mer n'est pas à bouder non plus.

Frankly, I've never understood all the fuss about the new year, since I tend to see time as continuous.

Honnêtement, je n'ai jamais compris toute cette agitation à propos de la nouvelle année, car je vois le temps comme quelque chose de continu.

 

But this year, I have the feeling that 2017 was rather trying for me and my family... So I'm ready to turn a new leaf. Not that I believe that things will magically become perfect in 2018, but somehow, for the first time, I understand the idea that changing a little number might help the mind grasping the fact that things are evolving.

Mais cette année, j'ai l'impression que 2017 n'a été facile ni pour moi ni pour ma famille... Et je suis prête à tourner une page. Ce n'est pas que je crois que  tout sera magiquement parfait en 2018, mais d'une certaine manière, pour la première fois, je comprends l'idée que changer un petit nombre peut aider l'esprit à intégrer le fait que les choses évoluent.

I do not believe in resolution or in radical change. But there may be some reorientations, some slight curves done in 2018... Again, still thinking that time is continuous, those reorientations have been prepared in the previous year, maybe even years... Symbolically, I postponed all decisions to 2018, thinking 2017 being so difficult, I may decide on an impulse I'd later regret.

Je ne crois ni aux résolutions, ni aux changements radicaux. Mais, il peut y avoir des réorientations, des fléchissements pour 2018... Bien sûr, le temps est toujours continu et ces réorientations ont été préparées par l'année passée, peut-être même par les années passées.... Symboliquement, j'ai remis toutes les décisions à 2018, pensant qu'au milieu d'une année difficile, je prendrais des décisions non rationnelles que je regretterais peut-être ensuite. 

For now, I wish you all an as-worry-free-as possible end of the year. Have you already made up you mind to change something for the coming year?

Pour le moment, je vous souhaite une fin d'année avec aussi peu de soucis que possible. Avez-vous déjà prévu des changements pour l'année à venir ?

Where's The Sea?

It seems most of you enjoyed my post on the spring tide and I'd like to thank everyone that took the time to leave me a comment.

Il semble que vous ayez apprécié mon article sur la marée d'équinoxe et je remercie tous ceux qui ont pris le temps de me laisser un commentaire.

The high tide is always impressive, but so is the low tide that happens about 6 hours later.

La marée haute était impressionnante, mais, six heures plus tard, la marée basse faisait son show.

Can you see how far the sea is when the evening before it was flooding the street along the beach?

 N'est-il pas étonnant de voir la mer si loin alors qu'elle inondait la rue le soir précédent?

Just as a little reminder here's the map of the coasts in the world where the tides are important. The Cottage, the cats and I live on a crimson coast under the black arrow.

Don't get fooled by the pools the sea left and that would have been dried out had we had a little sun... The sea is farther away than it's possible to see on this picture!

They were useful again to go down to the beach at low tide.

Ils ont retrouvé leur utilité à marée basse.

When the tides are so low, around the equinoxes, many, many people go beachcombing.

Lors des marées importantes, beaucoup de gens se rendent sur la plage pour aller à la pêche à pied.

It was very cold and windy that day, though, so there aren't as many people as usual. But the beach is wide and deep because of the tide so it might look empty and it's only an illusion... Let's use the zoom of the camera...

Il faisait froid et il y avait du vent ce jour-là, ce qui avait découragé certains pêcheurs. Mais il faut aussi avouer que comme la plage est encore plus grande en ces jours de grande marée, on peut croire qu'il n'y a personne quand en réalité, de petits bonshommes apparaissent grâce au zoom de l'appareil-photo.

Can you see all those tiny, tiny people walking far, far away where the sea line was that day?

The beach always seems very serene at low tide: there's so much more space that even when many people are walking you can feel like you're alone and the beach belongs to you.

But it also can be very dangerous, because the tide comes in all the more quickly that it has many feet to cover. Every year, people get trapped by the water. Not all of us can fly above the sea.

Si la pêche à pied vous tente lors de la prochaine grande marée, soyez prudent... La mer remonte très vite et chaque année, des personnes se font surprendre. On ne sait pas tous voler au dessus de l'eau.

The spring tides were beautiful, but they did bring with them some really cold and windy weather. And now I'm ready for warm and sunny days to work in the garden and so are the cats!

Ces marées d'équinoxe étaient superbes, mais elles ont été accompagnées d'un temps qui n'avait rien de printanier. Je rêve de jours plus ensoleillés pour pouvoir travailler dans le jardin.

Milo, who usually only stays inside during the winter months, decided it was much more comfortable to watch the street behind the window.

Milo, qui passe d'habitude ses journées dehors, a donc décidé de regarder la rue par la fenêtre pour rester au chaud.

Étant donné l'état actuel du Cottage, donner des conseils dans ce domaine serait ridicule, alors j'ai demandé à quelqu'un de beaucoup plus qualifié que moi de prendre le relais. Total Eclipse Of The Beach

Depending on where you live, you might have heard there was a solar eclipse last Friday. Above my neck of the seaside, it was quite a spectacular one since the moon was to cover 80% of the sun. With the pupils, we had been talking about it for a month.

Mon petit coin de bord de mer était sur le trajet de l'éclipse ce vendredi. Cela faisait un mois que l'on en parlait avec les élèves car chez nous, la lune allait couvrir le soleil à 80%, ce qui promettait d'être spectaculaire.

Unfortunately on Friday morning, the sky looked like that...

Malheureusement, ce matin-là, le ciel ressemblait à ça...

So we couldn't see the sun. Still, at about 10:20 am, everything became dark as if it was 7 pm. It was fun to watch the darkness settle for a few minutes, but not as spectacular, of course, as if the sun had been shining.

Honnêtement, impossible de voir le soleil ou la lune. Cependant, vers 10h20, le ciel s'est assombri comme s'il était 7h du soir. Nous avons regardé les ténèbres tomber, c'était étonnant, mais bien sûr pas aussi magique que si les nuages avaient raté le rendez-vous.

For most people the show was then over, but for Brittany, it was only beginning...

Pour certains, le spectacle s'arrêtait là, mais pas pour les Bretons.

Thanks to a few messages I exchanged with Kim from Savvy Southern Style last month, it has come to my attention that tides where not the same all around the world. I found that map of the world that explained it clearly. The deepest red means the tides are very important, the blue and green means the tides are nearly unnoticeable.

Grâce à quelques mails échangés avec Kim, du blog Savvy Southern Style, qui habite dans le sud des États-Unis, je me suis aperçue que l'ampleur des marées n'était pas la même pour tout le monde. Le Cottage se situe juste dans la zone bien rouge sombre où les marées sont très importantes, sous la flèche noire.

The Little White House is located in the crimson red part of Europe under the big black arrow. Twice a day, the sea comes close to the shore; twice a day the sea goes away from the shore. We are so used to it that I never mentionned it on the blog. It shapes the way we live: if we want to bathe in the summer, we first check the tide schedule; same thing if we need to take a boat to somewhere. I see it as Nature reminding us it's more powerful than humans.

J'ai pris l'habitude de vivre avec les marées, de vérifier les horaires avant d'aller me baigner en été ou avant de prendre le bateau pour aller visiter quelque petite île. Pour moi, c'est une façon quotidienne de se souvenir que la Nature est plus forte que nous.

Every now and then, usually around the equinoxes, the tides are very important. With the eclipse, the journalists called this weekend the "tides of the century". I thought I'd share some pictures with you.

De temps en temps, généralement au moment des équinoxes, les marées ont des coefficients plus élevés. Avec l'éclipse, les journalistes ont qualifié celles de ce weekend de "marées du siècle", faisant affluer plein de monde dans la région.

Above are pictures of my "everyday" beach, the one that is close to Cottage. It's a huge beach, but last Friday evening, the beach had totally disappeared and it seemed nothing could stop the sea.

Je vous ai remis ci-dessus quelques photos de ma plage "de base" celle à laquelle j'arrive après trois minutes de voiture en partant de Cottage. C'est une immense plage, mais vendredi soir, elle avait totalement disparu, comme si rien ne pouvait arrêter la mer.

Yes, this is where we usually lay in the sun...

Eh oui, c'est là qu'on étend habituellement nos serviettes...

The wall of rock that is always there was created to stop the sea on those days.

Le mur de rochers a bien fait son office de ralentir la mer... Mais elle tentait tout de même de passer par dessus bord.

This wall of rock is about 2 meter-high from the usual beach level, but last Friday, the sea was trying to get over it.

Le mur de rochers doit faire environ deux mètres de haut par rapport au niveau habituel de la plage... Cela vous donne une idée de la puissance des flots.

And we didn't need the stairs to go down to the beach...

Et les escaliers qui descendent à la plage avaient l'air bien ridicule tout à coup...

The tide was at its highest point at around 7:30 pm and by then not only had the beach disappeared, but the path above the beach that is usually the place where all families come for a nice seaside view walk had become dangerous...

La mer était haute ce vendredi soir vers 7h30 et à cette heure-là, même la promenade au dessus de la plage n'était plus au sec.

I might have taken a few risks to take a picture, which actually resulted in me getting drenched and in this picture... It let a nice salty taste on my lips...

J'ai tenté de prendre une photo d'un peu plus près et j'ai été trempée, l'appareil aussi. Résultat : cette photo de la vague qui explose sur moi et un goût salé sur les lèvres qui rappelle l'été.

So I decided to go back home to some warmth after one last look at the power of the sea.

J'ai donc décidé de rentrer au chaud à la maison après un dernier regard à la mer en furie.

Back home, I was to tired to cook a proper dinner, but not too tired for very hot tea...

J'étais beaucoup trop fatiguée pour cuisiner, mais un thé chaud me faisait vraiment envie.

And who had had the good idea to stop in town earlier to buy some macaroons? Me, me, me!

Et qui avait eu la bonne idée de s'arrêter en ville pour prendre des macarons en rentrant du travail ? Moi, moi, moi!

I'm going to let you drink a hot cup of tea as I'm pretty sure you got cold even watching at the pictures... Those "big tides" as we call them are sure beautiful, but they are always linked to crappy weather.

Je vous laisse vous réchauffer avec une bonne tasse de thé. Ces grandes marées ne vont généralement pas sans un temps froid et humide...
