Blues In The Kitchen

The Kitchen Cabinet Saga - 5 -

So what does a Petite Blonde do when she's thought so much about kitchen her mind is blank? Well, she has tea, of course!

 

Que fait une Petite Blonde quand elle a passé tellement de temps à réfléchir à sa cuisine que son cerveau ne fonctionne plus correctement? Elle prend le thé, bien sûr!

The blue runner is still on the table, from last weekend when my parents visited, as blue is my father's favourite colour. I've got the pink transferware teapot out, just because I used it for my previous post and it never made it back to the cupboard. And I'm using my blue ribbon mug, because the friend who gave it to me just called me and so that's the one I took out of the cupboard.

Le chemin de table bleu est toujours sur la table car j'ai reçu mes parents le week-end dernier et c'est la couleur préférée de mon papa. J'ai toujours la théière rose sortie, car depuis mon dernier article, elle n'a toujours pas retrouvé le chemin du placard... Et je verse mon thé dans mon mug "blue ribbon" de Wedgwood, juste parce que l'amie qui me l'a offert vient de m'appeler et que cela m'y a fait penser.

So, obviously, I need to paint those chairs, but most importantly, isn't blue lovely with pink? Shouldn't we check a few blue kitchens then?

1. The colour is Skylight by Farrow & Ball.

Mais, dites-moi donc, ce bleu ne va-t-il pas bien avec le rose? Et si je jetais un œil sur les cuisines bleues?

Now, while you watch all those kitchens closely so you can tell me which one is your favourite, I'll just chat over various things. You can just ignore my chatting, most people do.

Pendant que vous regardez attentivement mes photos de cuisine pour pouvoir me dire quelle est votre préférée, je vais faire la conversation, mais rien ne vous oblige à y prêter attention.

1. Because I had so many concerned messages, let me tell you I'm fine. The doctor appointment I talked about was only a yearly hormonal check up, it did confirm that I'm getting older, but that's not news! Thank you so very much for your messages.

J'ai eu plein de gentils messages s'inquiétant de ma santé. Le rendez-vous médical dont j'ai parlé dans un article précédent était juste un contrôle de routine... La conclusion en a été que je ne rajeunissais pas, mais bon, on s'en doutait!

2. There's a hedgehog that comes every night lately to eat out of one of the cats' plate... Too cute, but I can't get a picture of it (I've been trying, thinking you'd like to see him).

Il y a un hérisson qui vient piquer les croquettes du chat qui mange dehors tous les soirs depuis quelques temps. J'aimerais vous le prendre en photo, mais de nuit, impossible et si je sors pour allumer, il s'enfuit.

3. Researching those blue kitchens, I discovered I liked the lighter shades of blue better.

En recherchant ces images de cuisine, je me suis aperçue que les teintes de bleu les plus claires avaient ma préférence.

Me: "Cottage, I have good news!"

Cottage: "You've made your decision?"

Moi: "Cottage, j'ai une bonne nouvelle!"

Cottage: "Ah, enfin, tu as pris une décision!"

Me: "No, but for the first time, I have a colour on the maybe-list!"

Cottage: "It's about time! What is it?"

Me: "Blue! That could be very seaside cottage."

Cottage: "Hello? Aren't you the one who removed all the plastic fish that decorated the kitchen the very day you got the keys?"

Me: "But that was cliché! I don't want a cliché seaside cottage!"

Moi: "Non, non, rien n'est sûr. Mais pour la première fois, j'ai une couleur à écrire sur la liste des cuisines possibles."

Cottage: "Il était temps!  Et alors, tu me mets dans la confidence?"

Moi: "Bleu! Ce serait parfait dans un cottage de bord de mer!"

Cottage: "Quoi? Mais ne serait-ce pas toi qui as retiré tous les poissons en plastique de la cuisine le jour même où tu as eu mes clefs?"

Moi: "Mais c'était cliché! Je voudrais faire bord de mer sans cliché."

But as usual, Cottage got me thinking. Blue is on the list, but to be sure, I need to check some other possibilities. Will you check them with me in my next post?

Mais comme d'habitude, Cottage m'a fait réfléchir. Avant de foncer tête baissée (pour ceux qui croyaient encore que c'était possible), je vais faire encore quelques recherches, que je vous livrerai dans mon prochain article.

Notre-Dame de Paris

One Day In Paris - part 3

First, I wanted to thank you so much for your kind words on the last two "Parisian" posts (you can read them here and there if you missed them). I had such a nice time opening my inbox during the weekend to read your comments!

Tout d'abord, merci pour tous les petits mots que vous m'avez laissé sur les deux articles "parisiens" précédents. C'était un plaisir de lire ces messages ce weekend.

Now, about the pictures, I have a cheap and old camera that won't take two pictures in a row because the battery is too tired, so all are "one take" pictures, much as if I had an old camera with a film.

Maintenant, à propos des photos, la batterie de mon vieil appareil est fatiguée et il m'est donc impossible depuis plusieurs mois de prendre plus d'une photo à la fois... C'est un peu comme travailler avec un appareil à pellicule!

In the previous post, I took you to a tour of l'Île de la Cité. The heart of this island is the famous cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris. My idea was to take pictures of the outside and there was no way that I was going to queue to get inside with that heat! Well, I don't know what YOU did, but just when I was in front of the cathedral a cloud arrived and so I decided to queue, knowing you would love to see pictures of the inside.

The said cloud. Imagine what people thought of me taking a picture of the sky, when I was standing in front of the cathedral!!

My camera couldn't take a good picture of the nave, because flashes were forbidden and the light that was brought by the many chandeliers didn't agree with my tiny camera. So I took that one picture on Wikipedia for you. All others are mine.

 

La photo ci-dessus est la seule qui ne soit pas la mienne car mon appareil a refusé de prendre une photo correcte de la nef. La lumière ne lui convenait pas et bien sûr, le flash est interdit.

I was fascinated by the chandeliers, though they are not original. The cathedral was not always well-loved, but in the nineteenth century, when it was renovated, these chandeliers were made in the supposed "style" the original chandeliers would have had.

J'ai été fascinée par les chandeliers, même si ce ne sont plus les originaux. Ceux que l'on voit aujourd'hui datent de la rénovation entreprise au XIXème siècle et ils ont été dessinés en utilisant ce qu'on appelait le style "gothique" à cette époque.

A man was restoring one. Sorry about the blurry picture, the light was really awful in that part of the cathedral... since the chandelier was down! He told me before he began working on it, the chandelier's size was the same as the metallic structure you can see!

Un homme rénovait justement un chandelier. Désolée pour la photo floue, mais puisque le chandelier était dans cet état-là, la lumière dans cette partie de la cathédrale était particulièrement mauvaise. Avant qu'il ne le démantèle, le chandelier était aussi grand que la structure métallique que vous voyez.

In the Middle-Age, cathedrals were painted, mostly with primary colours. You can see above an old painted ceiling.

Au Moyen-Age, les cathédrales étaient peintes et si certains plafonds restent à rénover, d'autres, dans les petites chapelles à l'arrière du choeur, le sont déjà et sont magnifiques.

 But some of the chapels behind the choir have been restaured to their original beauty.

3. Now, I couldn't spend a day at Notre-Dame, without thinking about Victor Hugo's novel and one of the ballets that were made after it. So here's a solo danced by a Paris Opera dancer.

Je ne pouvais évidemment pas passer une journée à Notre-Dame sans avoir une pensée pour Victor Hugo et les nombreux ballets que son roman a inspiré. Je crois avoir passé des heures, enfant, à regarder les "Grandes" répéter cette variation!

Et vous, il y a un truc inattendu que vous associez à Notre-Dame?

Sleeping Beauty

So, don't you want to look like that? I'm going to tell you my secret. Come closer, it's not like I can yell it on all blogland...

Est-ce que ça vous dirait de ressembler à la Belle-au-Bois-Dormant? Approchez un peu, je vais vous livrer mon secret. Mais avant cela, vous devriez écouter cette divine musique que Tchaïkovski a composé sur ce conte. Cela vous mettra dans l'ambiance.

Maybe you should first listen to this. Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty is one of my favourite ballet music. I say that a lot, but seriously there are some ballet music I could be listening to all day long - my neighbours are complaining in the summer.

So I can't guarantee you to become as beautiful as Aurélie Dupont... Today is about a secret, not a miracle.

But if you want to keep a smooth skin during the cold months of winter, I'm going to share my recipe.

It was inspired by a famous French brand that made great skin softener, as you can see on their former catalogue.

Bon, j'ai plus ou moins piqué la recette à une célèbre marque de produits de beauté. Malheureusement, ils ont arrêté de commercialiser leurs mélanges d'huile pour le visage. Alors, cet hiver, j'ai décidé de refaire ma préférée.

And then, they stopped selling them. Last winter, I tried different kinds of natural oils, but they didn't work as well.

So this year, I made my own, inspired by their recipe.

 

For this recipe, I use some of the tiny bottles on the bottom shelf of this cabinet, that you might have notice in the previous post.

Pour réaliser cette recette, j'ai utilisé les petites bouteilles que je garde dans l'encoignure que vous avez peut-être vue dans l'article précédent.

In a small bottle, mix: Dans la bouteille, mélangez:

• 15 mL (one tablespoon) of sunflower oil / 15 mL d'huile de tournesol;
•  15 mL (one tablespoon) of grapeseed oil / 15 mL d'huile de pépins de raisin;
•  15 mL (one tablespoon) of pumpkin seed oil / 15 mL d'huile de pépins de courge;
• 12 drops of lemon essential oil / 12 gouttes d'huile essentielle de citron;
• 6 drops of pelargonium graveolens essential oil / 6 gouttes d'huile essentielle de géranium rosat;
• 6 drops of petitgrain bigarade (a kind of bitter orange) essential oil/ 6 gouttes d'huile essentielle de petitgrain bigarade;
• 6 drops of ylang-ylang (cananga odorata) essential oil/ 6 gouttes d'huile essentielle d'ylang-ylang.

 Shake well! Secouez bien!

Apply every evening on your face.

It smells evenly good.

I'm not a specialist in essential oils, but I've read a few books. As a rule, I always use less drops than what is advised as I know it's powerful stuff. The recipe above is the one I personally use.

Appliquez sur votre visage chaque soir. Attention, ne l'utilisez pas le matin car les huiles essentielles d'agrumes sont photo-sensibilisantes. Remarquez que les parfumeurs en utilise de plus en plus sans mettre de mises en garde.

Don't use it in the morning though as all citrus essential oils are not to be used on the skin if you go in the sun. I already noticed that some famous brand use them without any warning on their packaging...

I can promise you'll go to bed with a nice smell surrounding you  and you'll wake up without the dryness and cardboard feeling on your sheeks that is usual in winter (its' not just me, is it?).
