Bookcase Update - Part 5

The living-room bookcase was a project that I had had in my mind for a long time... Maybe since I visited Cottage. That long window-less wall was destined to be transformed to store my books.

La bibliothèque du salon était un projet qui me trottait dans la tête depuis fort longtemps... Peut-être depuis que j'ai visité Cottage. Ce long mur sans fenêtre avait pour vocation d'accueillir mes livres.

I never intended to "style" the bookcase. It was made to receive as many books as possible and hopefully, I designed it big enough to have a few empty shelves... so I can store future books.

Je n'ai jamais eu l'intention de "décorer" ma bibliothèque. Elle a été créée pour recevoir le plus de livres possible et j'espérais bien que certaines étagères resteraient libres, en attente de futurs livres que je ne manquerais pas d'acheter.

Thus said, I did have a little something that wasn't a book and that I wanted on the bookcase.

Cela dit, il y avait une petite chose qui n'était pas un livre et que je voulais sur une des étagères.

Last summer, I spent a week away from Cottage in Southern Brittany. It was a delightful holiday and I did take pictures to show you, but as my old cat, Piano, died a few days after I came back home, I wasn't really in the mood to blog.

L'été dernier, j'ai passé une semaine dans le sud de la Bretagne. C'était de superbes vacances et j'ai pris plein de photos pour partager ces lieux avec vous. Mais, peu de temps après mon retour, mon vieux chat Piano est mort et je n'avais plus vraiment la tête à écrire sur le blog.

During that time away, I visited the factory that makes the famous Quimper factory. You won't see it, though, as pictures were forbidden inside. Many things were kept a secret... We saw how the pieces were made from start to finish, but the recipesfor the clay or the colours were not given, of course. I spend a wonderful afternoon there and by chance, one piece caught my attention. I saw several phases of its making, as when we arrived in the first room, a worker, or maybe I should say an artist, was molding it and then when we were in the oven room, this piece was waiting on a tray, ready to be baked.

Pendant ces vacances, j'ai visité la fabrique de la faïencerie de Quimper. Je ne peux rien vous monrer car les photos étaient interdites à l'intérieur. Beaucoup d'éléments étaient gardés secrets... Nous avons vu comment les faïences étaient fabriquées du début à la fin, mais les recettes de la pâte ou des couleurs sont restées secrètes, bien sûr. J'ai passé une après-midi passionnante et le hasard a fait qu'une pièce a particulièrement attiré mon attention. Dans la première salle de modelage, un ouvrier, peut-être devrais-je dire un artiste, travaillait sur ce modèle. Quand nous sommes arrivés dans la salle des fours, un plateau de ce modèle attendait d'être cuit.

So when I visited the store, I decided to buy it to decorate the bookcase and to remember this day. It was way more expensive than things I usually buy for myself, so I had it gift-wrapped as it was a gift to myself. And I waited for the bookcase to be painted to open my gift!

Quand je suis passée à la boutique, j'ai donc décidé d'acheter ce modèle. Ainsi, je me souviendrais longtemps de cette journée et ce serait parfait sur une étagère de la bibliothèque. C'était tout de même un peu plus cher que ce que je m'offre habituellement et j'ai donc demandé à la vendeuse de me faire un paquet cadeau pour marquer le coup... J'ai ensuite attendu que la bibliothèque soit peinte pour ouvrir mon cadeau !

I really like the fact the baby is reading (it was meant to be on my shelves) and also how its off-white colour looks on the blue beadboard.

J'aime beaucoup le fait que le bébé soit en train de lire (cela ne pouvait qu'aller sur une bibliothèque) et la façon dont le blanc cassé ressort sur le bleu du fond de la bibliothèque.

I'm wondering, though, if a second baby of this collection wouldn't look good on the bookcase... What do you think? Should I go back to Quimper?

Je me demande quand même si un deuxième bébé de cette collection ne serait pas parfait... Qu'en pensez-vous ? Dois-je retourner à Quimper ?

Good Things Don't Come Easy

The Door Handle Story

Cottage has only one door downstairs... The one between the living-room and the dining-room/kitchen. I know that open floor plan is all the rage, but I actually like the fact that I can close that door when the dishwasher or the washing-machine (it is in the kitchen, which is quite common in France for small houses) is on... 

Cottage n'a qu'une seule porte en bas, celle qui sépare le salon de la partie  salle-à-manger/cuisine. Je sais, c'est la mode du tout ouvert, mais j'apprécie de pouvoir fermer la porte quand le lave-vaisselle ou le lave-linge sont en marche. 

This door has a French Limoges china door knob which does a lot, according to me, for the look of Cottage's downstairs. But all my friends and family complain that it's not very easy of use.

Cette porte a une petite poignée ronde en porcelaine de Limoges qui ajoute beaucoup, d'après moi, au charme du rez-de-chaussée. Mais mes amis et ma famille se plaignent que ce ne soit pas très facile à manipuler.

So when I remodeled upstairs, I decided to buy the door handles made by the same company, still in French Limoges china rather than the door knob.

Alors quand j'ai rénové l'étage, j'ai choisi des poignées de la même collection : assorties à celle du bas, mais plus pratiques.

 

Because they are made in France and using traditionnal methods and materials, they are quite expensive. It was a problem, because at that time, there were many, many things to pay... When you begin remodeling, it seems to never end: if you're blowing the wall where the bathtub is, it's better to buy a new bathtub, since you're getting redding of the walls and doors, it's nice when you rebuild them to use new doors and so on...

Comme elles sont en porcelaine de Limoges, elles ne sont pas données. C'était un problème à ce moment-là, car quand on commence à rénover, les choses à acheter s'accumulent vite. Puisqu'on détruisait les murs de la salle-de-bain, autant acheter une nouvelle baignoire et du coup, une nouvelle robinetterie, puisqu'on détruisait les murs, autant acheter de nouvelles portes pour le moment où on les remonterait... et ainsi de suite.

So I decided that door handles weren't a priority and thought I had a brilliant idea to buy one pair each month.

Je me suis dit que les poignées n'étaient pas une urgence et que j'allais en acheter une paire par mois, cela serait plus discret sur le budget.

I bought the first two in the local hardware store where I buy nearly everything I need... Then the next month, they were out of stock... It happens so often, I wasn't even surprised and came back a few days later, still nothing... After several times, I asked an employee about those handles: this was my workout for the week (if you've ever tried to catch an employee in those stores, you know that they tend to run from you and you have to chase them down the aisle). And she just said they had stopped working with this company.

J'ai acheté les deux premières dans le magasin de bricolage du coin dans lequel je trouve tout... Mais le mois suivant, il n'y en avait plus en rayon. Cela arrive souvent, alors j'y suis retournée quelques jours après. Toujours rien. Là, j'ai fait mon sport de la semaine en courant derrière une vendeuse qui essayait à tout prix de m'éviter. Quand je l'ai rattrapée, elle m'a juste dit que le magasin avait arrêté de vendre ce modèle.

So here I was with four upstairs doors and only two pairs of handles... The easiest thing would have been to sell those two pairs and decide on other handles... This is not what I did, of course.

Me voilà donc avec deux paires de poignées et quatre portes à l'étage... Le plus simple aurait été de revendre ces deux poignées et d'en choisir d'autres... Ce n'est pas ce que j'ai fait, bien sûr.

I looked on line for places selling those handles... I found one in Paimpol, a small harbour town located about three quarter of an hour away from Cottage. I called them.  They didn't have the handles. But they could order them for me, but I need to pay them in advance. So I drove their twice : once to pay and once a few weeks later to pick up the handles. The shop is in an adorable old building and stepping in there was worth all the trouble it took me to get those handles.

J'ai cherché en ligne la liste des revendeurs de cette marque et j'en ai trouvé un à Paimpol, un port situé à environ trois quarts d'heure de Cottage. Je les ai appelés. Ils n'avaient pas ces poignées, mais ils pouvaient les commander. Ils souhaitaient juste que je règle avant. Je me suis donc déplacée deux fois à Paimpol : pour payer et pour récupérer les poignées quelques semaines plus tard. La boutique est située dans un très vieux bâtiment et rien que pour y entrer, cela valait le coup.

That summer, I had read a book untitled Pêcheur d'Islande by Pierre Loti (it has been translated by An Iceland Fisherman) that takes place in that very town of Paimpol. So once the handles were safely in my car, I decided to have a nice walk around to see all the places that are mentionned in the book.

Cet été-là, j'avais lu Pêcheur d'Islande de Pierre Loti qui se passe justement à Paimpol. Une fois les poignées déposées dans la voiture, j'ai donc fait un petit pèlerinage sur les lieux du roman, du Paimpol à Porz Even.

Speaking of books... I hope have news about a little bookshelf project next week... Fingers crossed that after all the delays, I have fianlly found the right person to work with...

En parlant de livres... Il se pourrait que j'ai enfin des nouvelles de mon projet bibliothèque à vous donner bientôt. J'espère qu'après tous les retards accumulés, la personne avec laquelle je travaille en ce moment est la bonne... On va garder les doigts croisés, hein ?

The Post I Wasn't Hoping To Write Anymore

New Job

Before I actually begin this post, I'd like to send a huge thank you to all of you for your kind words about the loss of my cat Piano. It was very heat-warming to read all your messages and to realise that each of you had had sad experiences like that.

Avant de commencer ce nouvel article, je voudrais envoyer un immense remerciement à tous ceux qui ont pris le temps de m'écrire un gentil mot après la mort de mon chat Piano. C'était extrêmement réconfortant de lire vos messages et de constater que nombre d'entre vous aviez vécu une expérience aussi triste que celle-là.

For once, even though I'm very grateful to all of you who commented, I probably won't reply to each of you, but I have a good reason for that. I have a new job.

Pour une fois, même si je suis reconnaissante envers chacun d'entre vous, je ne vais probablement pas avoir le temps de vous répondre individuellement... Mais j'ai une bonne excuse : j'ai un nouveau poste.

When I arrived in Brittany, about ten years ago, all I could find were positions as substitute teacher. I'm not going to explain to you how complicated the French teacher system is, but once you become a substitute teacher, it's very difficult to get a permanent position because basically the schools need substitute teachers.

Quand je suis arrivée en Bretagne, il y a une dizaine d'années, je n'ai obtenu qu'un poste de remplaçante dans l’Éducation Nationale. Je ne vais pas vous expliquer le système hyper-compliqué des mutations dans le système français, mais sachez juste qu'il est beaucoup plus difficile d'obtenir un poste fixe une fois qu'on a intégré le corps des remplaçants.

But last year, some of you may remember, I was asked to be a substitute for a latin teacher (I taught French for the two third of my schedule and latin for one third - it was not all latin). I decided to accept the challenge.

L'année dernière, certains s'en souviennent peut-être, j'avais été contactée pour remplacer un professeur de lettres classiques, alors que j'ai personnellement passé les concours en lettres modernes. Mais j'avais décidé de relever le défi.

At the end of the year, I asked to be nominated as the "official" teacher for that job... I had no hope to be chosen as I had asked for a permanent position for the last nine years with no success... But I was happily surprised in July to get a message telling me the job was offered to ME!

A la fin de l'année, j'ai fait une demande pour être nommée officiellement sur ce poste, sans grand espoir... Cela fait neuf ans que je demande un poste fixe... Mais, surprise, début juillet, j'ai appris que je l'avais obtenu !

I knew an inspector would come to check on my work during the year... I was still very surprised when I got a message a few weeks ago that she would visit me before the end of October... I think it's a little early as I only officially began the new job on September 3rd... But there's nothing I can do about that. It means a great many papers to write to explain how I work, so I don't have much time right now to work on Cottage (or even to clean Cottage) or to blog... But hopefully I'll start breathing again by the end of October.

Je savais qu'une visite d'inspection était prévue pour moi cette année... Mais je ne m'attendais pas à apprendre, il y a quelques semaines, que l'inspectrice allait arriver avant la fin du mois d'Octobre. C'est très tôt, je trouve, pour quelqu'un qui arrive dans un nouvel établissement, mais il faut faire avec... Tout mon temps est donc occupé en ce moment à rédiger des papiers dans lesquels j'explique ma façon de travailler. Cela me laisse peu de temps pour m'occuper de Cottage ou du blog... Mais d'ici quelques semaines, je devrais pouvoir souffler !

The new school is located in a seaside town, about twenty minutes away from Cottage. The above picture was taken on my road to work... I bet you understand why I want to keep that job! Last week, the PE teacher organised a day out on the sea for the pupils... They learnt how to sail while I encouraged them during my break before going back to work...

La nouvelle école est située en bord de mer... Je traverse un port, puis je longe la mer pour m'y rendre tous les jours... La semaine dernière, le professeur d'EPS de la classe dont je suis professeur principal avait organisé une découverte de la voile... Je suis allée sur place pour encourager mes élèves pendant une heure de "trou" de mon emploi du temps avant de retourner travailler... Vous comprenez pourquoi j'ai vraiment envie de rester dans cet établissement ?

Île de Batz

Wandering Around Cottage - July 2018 Edition

I haven't left Cottage for my annual week of vacations yet, but I still have a few things from last year I haven't shared with you... So are you ready? I hope you didn't have a big meal just before opening this page and that you're not sea-sick because we need to take the boat for today's post!

Je n'ai pas encore quitté Cottage pour ma semaine de découverte de la Bretagne annuelle, mais j'ai dans mes réserves de quoi vous faire voyager aujourd'hui. J'espère que vous ne venez pas de faire un gros repas ou que vous n'avez pas le mal de mer, car il nous faut prendre le bateau.

When I showed you the beautiful cathedral of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, I told you it was dedicated to Saint Pol who had tamed a dragon that was terrorising the island of Batz. Today, we're hinking on the paths of this island.

Quand je vous ai emmené visiter la belle cathédrale de Saint-Pol-de-Léon, je vous ai appris que le saint auquel elle était dédié était célèbre pour avoir réussi à maîtriser un dragon qui terrorisait les habitants de l'île de Batz. C'est sur les chemins de cette île que je vous emmène aujourd'hui.

So let's say goodbye to the pretty town of Roscoff (on the above picture) where I took the boat. From the coast, it looks like the island is so close you could touch it. But the sea hides many danger and the boat actually can't go there on a straight line, so it takes about twenty minutes to reach it.

Disons un petit au-revoir à Roscoff (sur la photo ci-dessus) d'où j'ai pris le bateau. Depuis la côte, on a l'impression de pouvoir toucher l'île tellement elle est proche. Mais les fonds marins sont redoutables apparemment car le bateau fait un beau détour et il a fallu environ vingt minutes pour atteindre Batz.

Before you set foot on the island, I think it'd be appropriate that you knew how to pronounce its name (always a huge problem with Breton names). It's "ba" as in "Baa Baa Black Sheep". The "t" and the "z" are only here for the show!

Avant que vous ne posiez le pied sur cette île, il faut que vous sachiez prononcer son nom. C'est "ba". Le "t" et le "z" ne sont là que pour faire joli !

The coastline is absolutely breathtaking and altough there were lots of people as I visited in summer, it wasn't too crowded and I had some nice moments where  I could think myself the only human being on the island.

La côte est magnifique et bien qu'il y ait eu pas mal de monde car je m'y suis rendue en été, les chemins n'étaient pas non plus pleins de foule et il y a même eu des moments où j'ai pu me croire seule au monde sur cette île.

There is a path that goes all the way around the island. On one side, you have a beautiful view of the sea - you have to walk in the sand sometimes and it's good for your calves -  and the other is bordered by cultivated land or by pastures.

Un chemin fait tout le tour de l'île. D'un côté, il y a une belle vue sur la mer - ce qui nécessite parfois de marcher dans le sable, c'est bon pour les mollets - et l'autre côté est bordé par des terres cultivées ou des prairies.

What I found very interesting is that the cultivated land is still divided in small areas surrounded by hedges as it used to be everywhere in Brittany before World War II and the "remembrement". It keeps the land safe even when it rains... They removed the last hedge in the fields behind Cottage last winter and now every time there's a storm, there's a flood of mud in our street...

Ce que j'ai trouvé très intéressant est que le bocage a été sauvegardé sur l'île. Chaque parcelle cultivée, d'une taille raisonnable, est entourée d'une haie, comme c'était le cas partout en Bretagne avant le remembrement juste après la seconde Guerre mondiale. Cela permet de garder la terre en place quand il pleut. La dernière haie dans les champs derrière Cottage a été arrachée l'hiver dernier et depuis à chaque orage, il y a un fleuve de boue dans la rue...

I had intended to tour the whole island as the leaflet I had taken at the tourist information center said it was very doable... I guess it was only doable if you walk without stopping to admire the view and without visiting the beautiful exotic garden that's on the way. I did only half the island and it was already time for me to take the boat again.

J'avais pensé en partant faire le tour de l'île car d'après le dépliant que j'avais pris à l'office de tourisme, c'était faisable en une après-midi. Je crois que ce n'est faisable que si l'on ne s'arrête pas pour admirer la vue et si on ne visite pas longuement le beau jardin exotique que l'on croise en chemin. Je n'ai parcouru que la moitié est de l'île.

It was low tide when I came back to the harbour so the view was different and it was nice to admire the town of Roscoff from the sea.

C'était marée basse quand je suis arrivée au port en fin d'après-midi, ce qui donnait aux lieux un aspect différent. La vue de Roscoff depuis la mer n'est pas à bouder non plus.

Cathédrale Saint Paul Aurélien

Wandering Around Cottage - February 2018 Edition

Some readers might remember climbing with me on the top of the Kreisker chapel last November. From there, we had a wonderful view on Saint Pol de Léon's cathedral. I think it's time we visit the cathedral. 

Quelques lecteurs se souviennent peut-être avoir grimpé avec moi tout en haut de la flèche de la chapelle Kreisker en Novembre. De là, nous avions une superbe vue sur la cathédrale de Saint Pol de Léon. Il est temps de la visiter.

This is a very famous church around here, it's linked to a lot of history and the architecture is very rich. But I know your time is valuable and this is the kind of blog you read over coffee, not the kind of blog you study from. So I'll just highlight a few aspects.

C'est une église très célèbre dans la région. Elle est liée à beaucoup d'histoire et elle a une architecture très riche. Je ne pourrai donc pas épuiser le sujet ici sur ce petit blog fait pour une lecture rapide en buvant une tasse de thé. Je vais choisir quelques éléments marquants.

First, the basics. The church is located in the coastal town of Saint Pol de Léon, in Northern Finistère (Finistère means "land's end") in Brittany.

Reprenons au début. La cathédrale Saint Paul Aurélien est située à Saint Pol de Léon, une ville sur la Manche dans le Finistère nord. 

This church is a cathedral because the town was a main city for a religious division of Brittany from the 6th century to 1801.  It seems that there's been a religious building on this site since the 6th century. But, as often, there's been several buildings. In the 14th century, the town and its church were burnt by the English army. So the cathedral we visit today was built later, between the 14th and 16th century.

Il s'agit d'une cathédrale car la ville a été l'évêché du diocèse du Léon jusqu'en 1801. Un bâtiment religieux existe sur ce lieu depuis le VIe siècle, semble-t-il. Mais, comme souvent, il y a eu plusieurs constructions. Au XIVe siècle, la ville et son église ont été brûlées par les Anglais. La cathédrale que l'on visite aujourd'hui a donc été construite plus tard, entre le XIVe et le XVIe siècles.

 If you just walk quickly through this church, it will appear like a beautiful church as we have so many in Brittany. But if you take your time, it will enchant you with a few fun features. 

Si vous ne faites que traverser cette cathédrale, vous aurez la chance de voir une superbe église comme il y en a beaucoup en Bretagne. Mais si vous prenez votre temps, elle saura vous enchanter par ses détails.

The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Paul Aurélien - a statue of whom you can see below. He was a bishop who lived between the 5th and the 6th centuries. He was from England and came to Brittany where he's linked to several legends. Here's the one that is of interest to understand the art in the cathedral. In the nearby isle of Batz, a dragon was terrorizing the humans. Saint Paul Aurélien managed to tame the dragon, he did not kill it, the very knowledgeable guide really insisted on that point. 

La cathédrale est dédiée à Saint Paul Aurélien, dont vous pouvez voir une statue juste au dessus. C'est un évêque qui a vécu entre le Ve siècle et le VIe siècle. Il venait d'Angleterre et il s'est installé en Bretagne où plusieurs légendes sont racontées à son sujet. La plus célèbre d'entre elles se retrouve dans de nombreuses œuvres dans la cathédrale . Dans l'île de Batz toute proche, un dragon terrorisait la population. Saint Paul Aurélien, appelé à la rescousse, réussit à le maîtriser. La guide, très intéressante, a bien insisté sur le fait qu'il ne l'avait pas tué.

Saint Paul Aurélien and his dragon is represented in numerous places of the cathedral - in painting, in sculpture, in the stained glass. The tumbs of the different bishops of town often represent them with a dragon at their feet.

Saint Paul Aurélien et son dragon sont représentés de nombreuses fois dans la cathédrale : sculptures, peintures, vitraux. Les gisants de certains des évêques de la ville les montrent souvent avec un dragon à leurs pieds.

A part of the church is beautifully named "the shelves of the night". On these wooden shelves are stored "skull boxes". They are little wooden boxes that contains the skulls of people whose bodies used to be burried in the cathedral. When the bodies were removed, some of the skulls were kept there if the family wished it so.

  Dans le déambulatoire, vous trouverez "Les Etagères de la nuit". Derrière ce nom étrange se cachent des planches qui sont recouvertes de boîtes à chef. Il s'agit de petites boîtes en bois qui contiennent les crânes de défunts qui ont été enterrés dans l'église. Quand les corps ont été retirés, la famille pouvait choisir de laisser la tête dans la cathédrale.

But if you think this is a sad church, you're wrong. The stone carvers had some fun. On the top ofsome of the columns that are not too close to the choir, they sculpted faces that could be those of people from the town or some of the monks. Scroll down to see the own sticking his tongue out!They are nearly impossible to photograph for my camera as they are often in the dark. But if you visit, don't forget to look up to see them all!

    Mais si vous pensez qu'il est triste de visiter cette cathédrale, vous vous trompez. Les sculpteurs se sont bien amusés. Les  chapiteaux des colonnes qui ne sont pas trop proches du chœur  sont parfois ornés de visages qui sont peut-être ceux d'habitants de la ville, de commanditaires ou de moines, tirant parfois la langue ! Ils sont presque impossibles à photographier avec mon appareil car souvent situés dans la pénombre. Mais si vous visitez les lieux, n'oubliez pas de lever la tête.

The stalls in the choir are also worth a good look. Some of the carving are serious and represent Saint Paul Aurélien or the Virgin and some are just there for fun inspired by Medieval short stories.

    Les stalles du chœur méritent un regard attentif aussi. Les sculptures y sont tour à tour sérieuses, inspirées de l'histoire religieuse ou drôles, inspirées des fabliaux. 

I stayed there about two hours studying all the details. If you visit the town, don't miss the cathedral!

Je suis restée environ deux heures sur place à étudier tous les détails. Si vous passez par Saint Pol de Léon, ne manquez pas la cathédrale !
