Bookcase Update - Part 4

Cottage: There, the bookcase is all set and I'm going to look orderly again.

Cottage : Ah, maintenant que la bibliothèque est en place, je vais à nouveau avoir l'air propret. 

Petite Blonde: Hum, actually...

Cottage: What, again?

Petite Blonde : Alors, en fait...

Cottage : Quoi, encore ?

Petite Blonde: It needs some paint.

Cottage: Are you kidding me? Your Petite Mom convinced you to have it painted to save you some time.

Petite Blonde: Yes, but look, the beadboard isn't really painted, it's only primed.

Petite Blonde : Eh bien, je dois peindre.

Cottage : Tu te moques de moi ? Ta Petite Maman t'avait convaincue de la faire peindre pour gagner du temps.

Petite Blonde : Certes, mais regarde, le fond n'est pas peint, il a juste un apprêt. 

Cottage: And why is that?

Petite Blonde: Because I'm going to paint it myself. But you'll be proud of me. For once, I won't order paint that'll take weeks to arrive. I'm going to use some I have on hand.

Cottage : Et pourquoi donc ?

Petite Blonde : Parce que je vais le peindre moi-même. Mais tu seras fier de moi. Pour une fois, je ne vais pas commander une peinture qui n'arrivera que dans quelques semaines. Je vais utiliser ce que j'ai déjà en réserve.

A few curses later...

Cottage: What is it you're cursing about?

Petite Blonde: Well, none of the blues or greens I have meet the vision I had in my head.

Quelques jurons plus tard...

Cottage : Mais quelle est la raison de ce langage ?

Petite Blonde : Aucun des bleus ou des verts que j'ai ne correspond à la vision que j'avais en tête.

Cottage: Why don't you mix some as you've done for the walls or for the mirror that you finally decided not to use?

Petite Blonde: Yes, let's do that! So some Green Blue, some Blue Ground and lots of All White. That's it, that's my "Bookcase Blue".

Cottage: Yes, I really like it. It's very "Me".

Cottage : Pourquoi ne fais-tu pas ton propre mélange comme tu l'as fait pour les murs ou le miroir que tu as finalement décidé de ne pas utiliser.

Petite Blonde : Bonne idée ! Un peu de Green Blue, un peu de Blue Ground et beaucoup de All White. Et voilà mon "Bleu Bibliothèque".

Cottage : Oui, j'aime beaucoup, c'est tout à fait Moi !

The Post I Should Have Written Long Ago

A Little Loo Update

Please, come on in. I'd offer you a cup of tea, but given the place we're going to visit today, I'm afraid it's going to be a little cramped and I don't want you to spill your tea on my beautiful white painted wood floor. Besides, two people can't sit at the same time there... And as you'll see on one picture, the sit is already taken.

Je vous en prie, entrez donc, je vous offrirais bien une tasse de thé, mais étant donné l'endroit que nous visitons aujourd'hui, j'ai peur que cela soit un peu serré et je ne voudrais pas que vous renversiez votre thé sur mon beau plancher peint en blanc. En plus, on ne peut pas s'y asseoir à deux... Et le siège est déjà pris, comme vous le verrez sur une des photos.

Anyway, some of you might remember that I had the whole upstairs ripped out to add some insulation under the roof (the second floor is actually an old grain attic under the roof) and to redefine four rooms around the landing : an office, from where I'm typing right now, a bedroom that seems huge to me (but would probably be qualified as small by American standards), a small bathroom and a tiny loo. 

Certains lecteurs se souviendront peut-être qu'il y a quelques années, j'ai fait démolir tout l'étage pour isoler le toit (l'étage est en fait un ancien grenier à grains sous le toit) et j'ai remonté des cloisons pour créer un bureau, d'où je vous écris en ce moment, une grande chambre (enfin, moi, elle me semble grande), une petite salle-de-bain et de minuscules toilettes.

The loo is the only painted room so far. A while ago, I showed you the calming blue I had chosen for the walls, the pure white I had applied on the slopped ceiling, the floor, the baseboards and the roof window. It was nice... and unfinished. 

Les toilettes sont la seule pièce peinte pour l'instant. L'année dernière, je vous ai montré le bleu serein que j'avais choisi pour les murs, le blanc pur du plafond, du sol, des plinthes et de la fenêtre. C'était bien... Mais pas tout à fait fini.

 

I wanted a shelf above the loo as I had before... But, of course, the shelf I had before couldn't be reused as I had the new walls rebuilt slightly more apart than they were before. I looked in every store around Cottage and couldn't find one that had the right lenght. I was this close to buy a simple board and have it cut my length, which would have meant to give up on any curvy lines, when in an "empty-your-attic" sale nearby I found a pretty shelf. Shoot, I had forgotten to take my measuring tape... But the lady said it costed a grand total of one euro. So I took the risk. When I drove back home, I rushed to the loo, not to do my little business, but to check if the sheld fitted... And clearly, it looked as if it had been made to be there.

Je voulais une étagère au dessus des toilettes comme j'avais avant... Évidemment, l'ancienne étagère n'allait plus car en faisant remonter les cloisons j'ai très légèrement élargi la pièce. J'ai fait tous les magasins autour de Cottage et je n'ai pu en trouver aucune qui ait la bonne longueur. J'étais à deux doigts de me décider à acheter une planche à faire redécouper à la bonne longueur et à renoncer à toute moulure, quand dans un vide-grenier, je tombe sur une jolie petite étagère. Zut, j'avais oublié mon mètre... Mais comme la dame m'a dit qu'elle en voulait la somme astronomique d'un euro, j'ai pris le risque ! En arrivant à la maison, je me suis précipitée aux toilettes, non pour faire ma petite affaire, mais pour vérifier la taille de l'étagère. On aurait juré qu'elle avait été faite pour cet endroit !

A little work later (I removed the hooks under it, I filled the holes on top of it and painted it), it was ready to be put in place by my neighbour. Since he was there, I asked him to also take care of the old vintage sconce I had bought. I was so proud to think at that moment that one room upstairs was finished... "Hum, hum, Magali, I heard the neighbour say, this sconce is too old. It's not possible to put it in a 'water room' where regulations are stricter."

Avec un peu de travail (j'ai retiré les crochets dessous, j'ai rempli les trous dessus et j'ai peint), elle était prête à être posée par mon voisin. Puisqu'il était là, je lui ai demandé de poser aussi l'applique vintage que j'avais trouvée... Enfin, une pièce de l'étage allait être finie... "Euh, Magali, ai-je entendu mon voisin dire, cette applique n'est pas aux normes pour poser dans une pièce d'eau..."

Oh, no, now I had to find a new sconce and to live with a bare light bulb for a little longer.

Et voilà, maintenant, il me fallait trouver une nouvelle applique et vivre encore quelques temps avec une ampoule nue...

Lost In Translation - part 2

Where the title of these posts gets explained...

In the previous episode: I went to Ikea to buy a blue slipcovered armchair and finally decided at the counter to order the striped one.

Dans l'épisode précédent : je me suis rendue à Ikea pour acheter un fauteuil bleu et j'ai finalement décidé à la dernière minute de choisir celui à rayures.

Getting the huge box into my small car wasn't easy. Two ladies who were going out of the store empty handed (yes, it is possible) helped me. When it was done, I could feel every muscle of my back and a bruise forming on my thigh. But I was so relieved, I turned the key to ignite the engine. First gear, where's my bottle of water? Oh, there, at the back, with the boxes... Wait? What? They gave me the blue slipcover... I hadn't noticed while I was loading the car.

Charger la grosse boîte dans ma petite voiture n'a pas été une mince affaire. Deux dames qui sortaient du magasin les mains vides (donc, c'est possible) m'ont aidée. Cette épreuve réussie, je pouvais sentir chaque muscle de mon dos ainsi qu'un bleu en train de se former sur ma cuisse. Mais j'étais bien soulagée. J'ai mis le contact, enclenché la première, cherché ma bouteille d'eau... Où était-elle ? Ah, oui, balancée à l'arrière à côté de la boîte contenant la housse... Hein ? Quoi ? Mais elle est bleue, cette housse (comme ma cuisse)... Je ne l'avais pas remarqué avant.

Back to neutral and back to the counter. "But you signed the paper stating you got everything you wanted" said the nice lady... Of course, I had signed for a "ljungen" cover and I wanted a "remvallen". How could I not see the difference? Those words are obvisouly different. Visiting Ikea made me regret learning English rather than Swedish. But, it could be changed, couldn't it?

Retour au magasin et au comptoir où l'on venait de me donner les cartons. "Mais, vous avez signé que la commande correspondait," me dit la vendeuse... Et oui, j'avais signé pour une housse "ljungen" alors que je voulais la "remvallen". C'est là que je me suis dit que plutôt que d'avoir appris l'anglais, j'aurai dû consacrer ma jeunesse à l'étude du suédois. Mais bon, chez Ikea, on peut changer d'avis, c'est bien connu.

Of course, all I had to do was : wait in line to give it back at the "return counter" (and there was already about ten people waiting), go back to the sofa area and reorder the right slipcover, wait to pay at the cashier and then for the new box to be given to me at the same counter the blue one was delivered to me...

Aucun problème ! Tout ce que j'avais à faire était d'attendre au comptoir "retour" auquel il y avait déjà une dizaine de personnes qui patientait. Puis retourner au rayon canapé pour recommander la housse voulue, repasser en caisse et enfin attendre à nouveau qu'on m'appelle au comptoir "récupération des marchandises"...

 

I decided to drive back home with the blue cover...

J'ai préféré rentrer au Cottage avec la housse bleue...

Back home, I had to prepare a little hot bottle to calm my aching back down before doing anything.

Avant de m'occuper du fauteuil, j'ai dû préparer une petite bouillotte pour soulager mon dos.

 

Then, I opened the box in the car and brought the parts of the armchair one by one inside. I'm not one to give advice on my blog, but just in case you buy a slipcover from Ikea... The velcro things make it very difficult to slip the cover on the sofa or armchair and I found it was easier to do so without scratching your hands if I wore rubber gloves.

J'ai ouvert le gros carton dans la voiture et j'ai ramené les pièces détachées une par une dans la maison. Je ne suis pas du genre à donner des conseils sur le blog, mais pour le cas où vous achetiez un canapé avec housse chez Ikea, voici mon astuce. Les bandes scratch qui permettent de maintenir la housse en place rendent très difficile l'installation de la dite housse et arrachent la peau des mains. C'est beaucoup plus facile si vous enfilez des gants en caoutchouc avant.

I'm actually very happy with the way the living-room now looks. The new armcair is very comfortable (it's large enough for me to sit cross-legged, which might seem weird but was a very important criteria for me) and Shadow certainly thing so. We now battle every day to see who is going to spend the evening in the sofa... Shadow often wins...

Je suis très contente du résultat dans mon salon. Le fauteuil est confortable (et assez large pour que je puisse m'asseoir en tailleur - c'est peut-être bizarre, mais c'était important pour moi). Shadow aussi le trouve à son goût. Nous nous battons tous les soirs pour savoir qui va y passer la soirée... Shadow gagne parfois...

The pictures were taken as soon as I had finished assembling the chair, so the slipcover is still a little wrinkly, but it's already better. The light wasn't the best either as it had begun raining in the afternoon (it's Brittany after all). I'll write a part 3 with better pictures.

Les photos ont été prises dès la housse en place, elle est donc encore froissée, mais avec le temps, elle se détend. La lumière n'était pas top pour les photos car il s'était mis à pleuvoir dans l'après-midi (la Bretagne doit bien sa réputation à un fond de vérité). Je ferai une troisième partie avec de meilleures photos.

Speaking of light, I also bought a floor lamp at Ikea... I've been looking forever for a cheap second-hand Laura Ashley bridge lamp I fell in love in the catalog. But I've had no luck so far and I really need light on this side of the room... So for now, this one will do.

En parlant de lumière, j'ai aussi acheté une lampe à Ikea... Je cherche depuis des années sur Le Bon Coin une lampe "pont" de Laura Ashley qui m'a tapé dans l'oeil dans le catalogue... Mais je ne l'ai jamais trouvée et j'ai vraiment besoin d'une lumière de ce côté de la pièce... Alors celle-là fera l'affaire en attendant.

 

I think I did deserve a cup of tea and muffins after all that living-room transforming... I would have had picked the blue china to match the new chair if it hadn't been stored in the shed and if it hadn't been raining... 

J'avais bien mérité une pause thé et muffins après cette journée. Je serais bien allée chercher un de mes services bleus pour que la vaisselle soit assortie au fauteuil s'ils n'étaient pas stockés dans l'abri de jardin et s'il n'avait pas plu des cordes...

PS3: I HAD to keep the lamp box because Shadow has decided it was the perfect hiding place.

PS 3 : J'ai été obligée de garder le carton de la lampe au milieu du salon car Shadow a décidé que c'était encore mieux que le fauteuil !

Lost In Translation - part 1

Living-Room Transformation

Yes, it's progressing again!

As I wrote in my last post, I took the occasion of Brittany school winter break to visit Ikea.

Comme je l'ai écrit dans mon dernier article, j'ai profité des vacances d'hiver pour rendre une petite visite à Ikea.

 

In December, I listed my old beige sofa on a classified ad website, thinking it would take months to sell... Apparently, I priced it really cheap as it was sold in a week, living my room bare. I immediately planned on buying an armchair to recreate my cosy corner. 

En décembre, j'ai mis mon vieux canapé beige sur Le Bon Coin, pensant qu'il me faudrait des mois pour le vendre... Je ne l'ai pas mis cher et il est parti en une semaine. Mon salon m'a alors semblé tout vide et j'ai immédiatement pensé à acheter un fauteuil pour recréer mon coin douillet.

As you can imagine, I would have loved a beautiful Laura Ashley armchair, but knowing that cats would probably spend at least as much time as humans on it, I turned to Ikea... I browsed through their armchair page for a while, but with my criteria of comfort, size and slip-cover, I found out that the armchair from the same series as my sofa was probably the best idea.

Comme vous vous en doutez, j'aurais adoré un superbe fauteuil Laura Ashley, mais sachant que les chats y passeraient sûrement autant de temps que les humains, je me suis plutôt tournée vers Ikea.  J'ai farfouillé sur leur page "fauteuils" un moment, mais avec mes critères de confort, de taille et de housse, j'ai compris que le plus simple était de prendre le fauteuil de la même série que mon canapé.

I then hesitated for hours between slip-covers. I thought that the blue one was a bit too dark for my Cottage, but I didn't like the idea of having the same ticking toile that on the sofa... It would be too matchy-matchy.

J'ai ensuite hésité pendant des heures pour choisir la housse. Je trouvais que la housse bleue était un peu trop sombre pour Cottage, mais je n'aimais pas non plus l'idée de reprendre la même housse rayée que pour le canapé. Le côté tout assorti ne m'emballait pas.

Then, as I browsed through my Pinterest file, I found this picture and knew I had to choose the blue armchair.

Puis, en jetant un œil sur les photos que j'avais mises de côté sur Pinterest, je suis retombée sur cette photo que j'avais oubliée et j'ai su qu'il fallait que je choisisse le fauteuil en bleu.

Ikea is an hour away from Cottage. I drove - with my scratched car - under pouring rain last Monday morning in order to get there for the opening. I wanted to go straight to the sofa area, but I actually had to stop to the bathroom first... All the rain had given my bladder ideas...

Ikea est à environ une heure de Cottage. J'ai donc conduit ma voiture - à l'arrière rayé - sous une pluie battante lundi matin pour arriver à l'ouverture. J'avais prévu d'aller directement au rayon "canapé", mais j'ai dû faire un arrêt aux toilettes... Toute cette pluie avait donné à ma vessie des idées...

In the sofa area, which right at the beginning of the store, the armchair was showed in blue and the sofa in grey... I had second thoughts. At the counter, I ordered the armchair with the ticking slipcover.

Au rayon "canapé", qui est peu après l'entrée du magasin, le fauteuil était justement présenté en bleu et en gris... J'ai eu des doutes. Finalement, au comptoir, j'ai commandé la housse à rayures...

 

Then began the endless walk thought all the different alleys - bookshelves, tv stands, bedrooms, kitchens, children's bedrooms, bathrooms... The more I walked, the more I had doubts... Why had I chicken out? Why hadn't I ordered the blue slipcover? 

Et là a commencé la marche sans fin dans le labyrinthe - le rayon des bibliothèques, les meubles télé, les chambres, les cuisines, les chambres d'enfants, les salles-de-bains... Plus j'avançais, plus j'avais des remords. Pourquoi avoir changé d'avis ? Pourquoi avoir refusé de prendre un risque ?

PS2: When I sold the old sofa, the couple who bought it wasn't very good at getting it out of Cottage through the tiny front porch door. It reminded me a lot of that scene in Friends. I even told them "Pivot!", but it apparently didn't ring any bell for them. Please, for the sake of your keyboard, don't drink while watching...

PS2 : Quand j'ai vendu mon vieux canapé, le couple qui l'a acheté a eu toutes les peines du monde à le faire passer par la petite porte de la véranda... Cela m'a bien fait penser à cette célèbre scène de Friends. J'ai tenté de leur dire "Pivotez!", mais cela n'a rien eu l'air d'évoquer pour eux.

The Toilets in Cottage - A History - Part 3

You're beginning to know me very well because when I said in my last post that the next step in renovating the loo was to pick a paint colour, you expected me to take for ever... Well, for once, the colour was chosen very quickly. 

Vous commencez à bien me connaître car quand j'ai dit dans mon dernier article qu'il fallait que je choisisse la couleur pour peindre les toilettes, vous vous êtes dit que ça allait prendre des mois... Eh, bien, pas cette fois ! 

Indeed, I have begun a little project in the bathroom - that you won't see for a while as the bathroom is just a mess - and it made sense to me to link the bathroom and the loo together with a colour that would appear in both room somewhere. There isn't much to paint in the loo, so this colour is going on the walls.

En effet, j'ai commencé un petit projet dans la salle-de-bain et je me suis dit que ce serait bien qu'il y ait un rappel de cette couleur dans les toilettes. Comme il n'y a pas beaucoup d'endroits à peindre dans une si petite pièce, ce sont les murs qui reçoivent cette couleur.

It's a very light shade of blue, called "Borrowed Light" by Farrow & Ball. My plan was to use it on three walls and then paste some wallpaper on the wall behind the toilet, as I had done before the loo was insulated. 

C'est un bleu très pâle intitulé "Borrowed Light" de Farrow & Ball. Mon idée était de l'utiliser sur trois murs et de mettre du papier peint sur le mur derrière les toilettes comme je l'avais fait auparavant.

 

I had picked the wallpaper a year ago when I had found a roll of the most perfect Graham & Brown wallpaper on sale at a local hardware store. I was very confident as wallpapering is something I've done several times...

J'avais déjà le rouleau de papier peint de Graham & Brown car il m'avait tapé dans l’œil il y a un an lors des soldes dans un magasin de bricolage du coin. J'étais assez sûre de moi pour une fois car j'ai déjà plusieurs projets avec papier peint à mon actif...

I shouldn't have thought so much of me...It was a huge mess, the paper kept tearing when I tried to slid it behind the toilet or when I tried to cut it at the top or at the bottom above the baseboard... I tried three times, swore a lot and decided to call it a day... I carefully cleaned the wall and the next I painted it with the "Borrowed Light" paint I had.

Ma vantardise a été durement châtiée... Une vraie catastrophe. Le papier se déchirait dès que je le tirai doucement pour le faire passer derrière les toilettes, mais aussi quand j'essayais de le couper à la jonction de la pente du toit ou de la plinthe... Après plusieurs tentatives et beaucoup de jurons, j'ai jeté l'éponge... Enfin, non, je l'ai utilisée pour bien nettoyer le mur et le lendemain, j'ai ressorti ma peinture bleue et j'ai peint !

I was disappointed that my vision couldn't meet reality, but at some point I needed that project done.

J'étais déçue que ma vision ne devienne pas réalité, mais contente que les murs soient finis.

Because an other one was waiting for me...

Car un autre projet m'attendait...

You might remember that I told you I used cheap pine floor for the loo.  It's really beautiful, but it can't compare to real old pine floor and as we have real old pine floor in Cottage (you won't remember reading that close at the end of this post), it was clashing... So I decided to paint it. It's now a beautiful white ("All White" by Farrow & Ball). I only applied two coats of paint after the primer, so the wood is still showing a little, which I love.

Je vous avais expliqué avoir choisi du pin pour le sol du petit coin. C'est assez joli... si ce n'est pas à côté de vrai plancher ancien... ce qui est le cas au Cottage (vous oublierez avoir lu ces derniers mots dès que vous aurez fini l'article)... J'ai donc pris la décision de peindre le plancher neuf. Deux couches seulement de blanc ("All White" de Farrow & Ball) après la sous-couche pour que les nœuds du bois soient encore visibles, ce que j'aime bien. 

I'm happy with the way it all turned out. 

Je suis contente du résultat.

I'd love to tell you the loo is perfect, but there are still more things to do... Finding a shelf to go above the toilet, finding a sconce to replace the amazing light bulb I use for now, adding molding around the door and painting the door... I could be doing all those things right now, but I'm busy keeping an eye on a cat who has now a huge scar on his back, locked in the office, while two workers have taken the power in the living-room for a project that I hope to show you at the end of June...

J'aimerais vous dire que c'est fini et qu'on passe à la pièce suivante, mais il reste encore beaucoup à faire. Trouver une étagère à mettre au dessus des toilettes, trouver une applique pour remplacer ma superbe ampoule, mettre des couvre-joints autour de la porte et peindre la porte. Je pourrais être au travail là-dessus en ce moment, mais je fais la garde malade pour un chat qui a une immense cicatrice sur le dos, je suis enfermée dans le bureau, pendant que deux ouvriers ont pris possession du salon pour un projet dont j'espère vous parler fin juin.

PS1: The pictures were all taken when I was working on the project, hence the mess everywhere... I'll take real reveal pictures when the project is complete. The pictures were also taken at different moments of the day, so the paint doesn't exactly seem the same.

PS 1 : Les photos ont été prises au cours des travaux, donc c'est le bazar... Je prendrai de meilleures photos quand les choses seront plus avancées. Cela a aussi été pris à différents moments de la journée, ce qui explique que le bleu semble varier.

PS2: Really, I had not anticipated the cat surgery would be such a big deal, he is in pretty bad shape and it takes all my time to look after him... We're going back to the vet tomorrow as it's not evolving as we wished... I just spent an hour lying on the floor because he had collapsed on my hand as I was picking something up... Please forgive me if I'm late replying to your comments these days...

PS 2 : Je n'avais pas envisagé que les suites de l'opération soient si compliquées pour mon chat. Il n'est vraiment pas en forme et je dois veiller sur lui à tout moment pour l'instant pour qu'il n'arrache pas  les fils. Nous retournons chez le véto demain car cela n'évolue pas aussi bien que prévu. Je viens de passer une heure allongée sur le sol car il s'est soudain calmé en posant sa tête sur ma main alors que je le caressais... Vous comprendrez si exceptionnellement je ne réponds pas à vos commentaires pendant quelques jours...
