The Toilets In Cottage - A History - part 1

It's funny where a country's way of life sometimes hide. In my previous post where I showed you some bathroom inspiration pictures, only one French reader noticed that there was a toilet in each of these rooms. "Why, of course," you think if you live accross the ocean. Well, you see, if your address is on my side of the ocean, it's not typical to have your toilet in the bathroom, it's more common to have it in a separate room that is about the size of a small cupboard.

C'est bizarre ces moments où les différences culturelles font soudain irruption. Dans mon article précédent, je vous avais montré des photos d'inspiration de salle-de-bains. Une seule de mes lectrices a remarqué qu'il y avait systématiquement des toilettes dans ces pièces. Les lecteurs vivant de l'autre côté de l'océan n'y ont pas prêté attention car pour eux c'est plus courant que d'avoir les toilettes séparés, comme c'est le cas au Cottage.

This is, obviously, the tiniest room in Cottage, though maybe the rotting front porch isn't any bigger, and this is my new project. It might seem weird to some people to tackle this room before the living-room or the bedrooom are finished. But if you have chronic intestine inflammation like I do, this tiny room turns out to be the most important room of your home.

Il s'agit, bien sûr, de la plus  petite pièce de mon Cottage, bien qu'à y réfléchir, la véranda d'entée soit guère plus grande, et c'est mon nouveau projet. Cela  va peut-être en étonner certains que je m'attaque à cette pièce alors que le salon ou la chambre sont loin d'être finis. Mais lorsque vous avez comme moi une inflammation chronique des intestins, cette petite pièce s'avère très importante dans votre maison.

Before we get to the decorating part of this project, let's do a little history lessons about Cottage's toilet...

Avant d'arriver à la partie décoration de ce projet, une petite leçon d'histoire est nécessaire...

When Cottage was built, at some moment of the beginning of the 20th century I believe, there were no inside toilets. There probably was a little shed in the garden for that purpose... I'm really glad this time is over, though I'm sure it had it's charm. I'm even planning on adding a toilet later in the garden shed... But I'll still have one inside!

Lors de la construction de Cottage, probablement au début du XXe siècle, il n'y avait pas de toilettes à l'intérieur. Il devait y avoir une petite cabane au fond du jardin... Je suis assez contente que cette époque soit révolue... Même si en fait, je réinstallerai bien des toilettes dans l'abri de jardin plus tard... tout en conservant ceux à l'intérieur !

 Then a toilet was added inside, under the stairs as it was typical. But then, the upstairs was only an attic and the staircase was in a separate corridor. When I visited Cottage, the corridor was long gone, making the toilet door a few feets from the previous owners' sofa... It was also facing the front door, which happen to be a glass door... I never used this room. And neither did my friends when I had company. Fancy telling your friend who's asking where the bathroom is : "It's just that door here, I can open it for you while still seating on the sofa and we can keep the conversation going while you do your little business"? Nah...

The previous owners loved yellow and orange.

 Des toilettes furent installés à l'intérieur, sous les escaliers, ce qui est l'endroit typique (c'est la même chose chez mes voisins). Mais à ce moment-là, l'escalier se trouvait dans un couloir séparé. Quand j'ai rencontré Cottage, il n'y avait déjà  plus de couloir et la porte des toilettes se situait à quelques dizaines de centimètres du canapé des anciens propriétaires. Les toilettes se trouvaient aussi juste en face de la porte d'entrée... vitrée... Je ne les utilisais jamais, mes invités non plus. Vous m'imaginez dire à quelqu'un qui me demande où sont les toilettes : "C'est la porte juste là, je peux te l'ouvrir tout en restant assise sur le canapé et on peut continuer notre conversation pendant que tu fais tes petites affaires"? Bof, bof...

 

When I remodeled the downstairs, this room just had to go... I remember this was not a very popular decision when I explained it on the blog, but I think people who can't understand that have never seen a small cottage. I don't regret it one bit.

Quand le rez-de-chaussée a été refait, cette pièce devait disparaître... Je sais que cette décision n'était pas très populaire à l'époque sur le blog, mais je pense que les gens ne se rendaient pas compte de la petite taille du cottage. En tout cas, je ne regrette pas. 

 

But if I was able to make that decision it's because the previous owners, even if I don't like their sense of design, had the great idea to add a toilet upstairs. Their not-so-great ideas were to make it part of one of the bedroom and to paint it orange with little bubly fish...

Mais si j'ai pu prendre cette décision, c'est parce que les précédents propriétaires, dont je n'appréciais pas trop le sens de la décoration, avaient eu une bonne idée, celle d'ajouter des toilettes à l'étage. Là où l'idée n'était pas si géniale, c'est que les toilettes avaient leur porte dans la chambre... et les murs étaient peints en orange avec des petits poissons qui bullaient...

 

Before I met Cottage, I had never hold a paint brush. I had redone two apartments, but I only had the ideas and had them executed by somebody else. I was both terrified and excited to try on my own... But what if I did a mess? So I tried my hand in this room, thinking I couldn't really do worse, could I?

Avant d'habiter Cottage, je n'avais jamais tenu un pinceau. J'avais bien refait deux appartements, mais je n'avais fait que donner des ordres exécutés par quelqu'un d'autre. J'étais autant terrifiée qu'impatiente de m'essayer à cette tâche. Et si je ratais tout? J'ai décidé de me faire la main sur les toilettes.

My transformation was enjoyed for four years and got demolished when the upstairs was insulated.

J'ai profité de cette transformation pendant quatre ans, puis tout a été démoli pour isoler l'étage.

During that part of the renovation, I had a roof window added to the room. To me it was very important to have natural light, thus transforming the cupboard into a real tiny room, so important that I fought against the city rule lady who first told me it was impossible... By "fought", I don't mean I rolled on the floor of the city hall with her begging for forgiveness under my blows... No, I just redid the presentation file...

 J'ai profité de cette phase des travaux pour faire ajouter une fenêtre de toit dans les toilettes. Pour moi, c'était très important d'avoir la lumière du jour, transformant ainsi cette sorte de placard en sous-pente en une vraie pièce. Evidemment, j'ai dû me battre avec la mairie pour obtenir l'autorisation. Enfin, n'imaginez pas que j'ai roulé sur le sol en donnant des coups de poing à la dame du service de l'urbanisme, hein ? J'ai juste refait deux fois le dossier !

 

When they rebuilt the walls, I realised the roof window wasn't centered in the middle of the room, which made me really mad as I had given them a floor map with all the measurements, but what could I do?

Quand les murs ont été remontés, je me suis aperçue que la fenêtre n'était pas centrée, j'avais pourtant fourni un plan avec toutes les mesures, mais bon, il était trop tard pour faire quoi que ce soit...

It was really fun going through old photos to get this post ready. Cottage has change so much! Now, in the next part, I'll be forced to talk a lot more about the upstairs to explain other choices I've made for the tiniest room in Cottage!

Last summer...

Cottage: Hum, hello? You know I understand your taking care of yourself quest. But aren't you forgetting me a little along the way?

Petite Blonde: I'm thinking of you! But to be honest, I have no idea how to tackle this living-room project and where to begin. There's so much to do...

L'été dernier...

Cottage : Oh ! hé ! Coucou ? Tu sais, je comprends que tu aies besoin de temps pour t'occuper de toi... Mais tu ne m'oublierais pas un peu en route ?

Petite Blonde : Mais, non, je pense à toi. Mais, en fait, ce projet salon me paralyse. Je ne sais pas par quel bout le prendre, il y a tant à faire...

Cottage: Why don't you start with something quick and easy?

Petite Blonde: Huh, whare have you been for the last five or six years? Nothing is quick and easy when it comes to renovating.

Cottage : Pourquoi ne pas commencer par un petit truc facile et rapide ?

Petite Blonde : Facile et rapide ? Euh, tu n'as donc rien retenu des six dernières années ? Rien n'est jamais facile et rapide dans la rénovation.

Cottage: I'm well aware, but maybe, if we both think hard.

Petite Blonde: After all, what if I took care of the window? I've already done that project for the kitchen and for the dining-room, so it could, for once, not be too much of a problem.

Cottage : Allons, fais un effort...

Petite Blonde : Et si je m'occupais de la fenêtre ? C'est un projet que j'ai déjà fait dans la cuisine et dans la salle-à-manger, donc, pour une fois, il ne devrait pas y avoir de problème.

Cottage : Quelle fierté quand ma fenêtre a été admirée par le monsieur venu pour...

Petite Blonde : Chut ! Les lecteurs ne savent rien de ce nouveau projet.

Cottage: Oh, anyway, this project isn't going anywhere for now. But I could tell them that we've gotten rid of...

Petite Blonde: No, you can't tell them.

Cottage : Bof, de toute façon, pourquoi en parler puisqu'il a l'air à l'arrêt complet... Mais est-ce que je peux leur dire que l'on s'est débarrassé de...

Petite Blonde : Non, tu ne peux pas.

Cottage: Can I tell them that we have a new...

Petite Blonde: No, no, no! We're going to stop that post there or you'll reveal all my secrets!

Cottage : Et alors, je peux au moins leur dire qu'on a un nouveau...

Cottage Dormers: Behind The Scenes

A Dormer Series - part 3

I'm just going to sum up briefly part 2 just in case you're not a regular reader here or just in case you've got really bad memory.

Laissez-moi vous résumer brièvement l'épisode 2 de cette série, peut-être n'êtes-vous pas un lecteur régulier ou avez-vous la mémoire très courte...

I had decided what the dormers I wanted to create on Cottage should look like, according to the age of Cottage that I wanted to respect,  the budget I had and the city construction rules. Everything was for the best... until I asked a painter for a quote to paint the dormers and that was way out of budget...

Après des années de réflexion, j'avais décidé du plan pour ajouter deux lucarnes ou chiens assis sur mon Cottage. J'avais pensé à tout : le style, le budget, les règles de construction de la ville... mais j'avais oublié de prendre en considération le peintre qui m'a fait un devis exorbitant...

For a few hours, I just didn't know what to do. Then I grabbed the phone and called the carpenter, just in case he had an idea.

Je suis d'abord restée un peu hébétée, puis j'ai décidé d'appeler le menuisier, juste pour le cas où il ait une idée.

Carpenter: You painted the downstairs windows, didn't you?

Menuisier : Vous avez bien peint les fenêtres du rez-de-chaussée, non?

Me: Well, yes, because it didn't require me to climb on my roof!

Moi : Oui, mais je n'avais pas besoin de grimper sur le toit !

 

Carpenter: Well, we'll get the window frames ready a week in advance and we'll deliver them to you so you can paint them before they are on the roof.

Menuisier : On va créer les structures des lucarnes avec une semaine d'avance, on vous les livrera et vous les peindrez avant qu'on ne les installe sur le toit.

Did I mention I kind of like my carpenter?

Il est bien mon menuisier, hein ?

 

Anyway, for a week, right after school, I would jump in my painting clothes and apply a coat of my favourite All White by Farrow & Ball on one of the frames of the future dormers.

Du coup, pendant une semaine, dès l'école finie, je sautais dans mes vêtements de peinture et je badigeonnais de mon blanc préféré All White de Farrow & Ball mes futures lucarnes.

Shadow was a little worried as I guess he could sense something was going to happen at Cottage.

Shadow était  un peu stressé par tout ce remue-ménage et il m'observait beaucoup.

Then my job was done and the men got into action.

Ma partie du boulot étant achevée, les hommes se sont mis au travail.

 

To keep within Cottage's style, I chose a very simple gable dormers and had slates added on each side as is traditionnal in Brittany. The height of the dormers was calculated so we would not touch the stone walls of Cottage and therefore not affect its stability.

Pour que les lucarnes s'intègrent sans problème à la façade de Cottage, je les ai choisies assez simples, avec un pignon en bois et une couverture en ardoise sur le côté, comme c'est traditionnel en Bretagne. La hauteur des lucarnes avait été calculée de façon à ne pas toucher du tout les murs en pierre du bâtiment.

The carpenters and the roofers worked very fast and as I was still at school at that time, it was hard to take pictures as often as I'd have liked.

Les menuisiers et les couvreurs ont travaillé très vite et comme j'avais encore "école", il m'a été difficile de prendre des photos à chaque étape.

 

I couldn't be happier with the way the "new" dormers look. A few people that came to Cottage recently didn't even noticed the dormers and I had to remind them they were not there before. Cottage is so proud of them that he himself think they were always there!

Je suis ravie du résultat. Plusieurs personnes venues récemment au Cottage n'ont même pas remarqué les nouvelles lucarnes et j'ai dû leur rappeler qu'elles n'étaient pas là avant. Cottage lui-même pense qu'elles lui ont toujours appartenu!

Always On My Mind

A Dormer Series - part 2

When I met Cottage, it checked most of my little boxes. Among those little boxes, there was one that said "bedrooms under roof".

Quand j'ai rencontré Cottage, il remplissait la plupart de mes critères, parmi lesquels "chambres sous les toits".

 

You might think it's because I love how charming a sloping ceiling is. You wouldn't be wrong, but the main reason was that I don't like the idea to have huge unknown spaces above me when I sleep.

Vous pensez peut-être que je ne peux pas vivre sans le charme d'un plafond en pente, mais c'est plutôt que je ne peux pas vivre avec l'idée d'un grenier vide au-dessus de moi quand je dors.

But in my head, this little box went with "dormer windows" and this didn't get checked with Cottage. From the day I visited it, this was on my mind. I thought dormer windows actually belonged to Cottage and it was just a mistake they weren't there.

Mais dans ma tête, ce critère allait de pair avec "chien assis". Non, non, je ne voulais pas un doberman dans ma chambre, mais une de ces charmantes fenêtres. Quand je regardais Cottage depuis le jardin, j'avais la sensation que quelque chose lui manquait.

Fixing that mistake meant creating dormers that could have been here from the beginning.

Lui rendre ce qui lui manquait signifiait créer des fenêtres qui donneraient l'illusion d'avoir toujours été là.

So every time I would wander around Cottage, I would take close-up pitures of dormers that I never showed you in my "Wandering Around" posts, of course. It was a secret project.

Par conséquent, chaque fois que je partais en excursion aux alentours de Cottage, je prenais en photo plein de fenêtres que je ne vous montrais jamais dans mes articles, bien entendu. C'était un projet secret.

But I did showed them to my carpenter when we began working on that project last year. This was a very long project because I didn't "use" an architect. The carpenter and I decided how the dormers should look like and how high or wide they should be, so they'd look like they always had been there and so I'd still have light inside my rooms.

Mais je les ai montrées au menuisier quand nous avons commencé à travailler sur ce projet l'an dernier. La préparation a pris beaucoup de temps car je n'ai pas fait appel à un architecte. Le menuisier et moi avons décidé de la forme, la hauteur ou la largeur des chiens assis de façon à ce qu'ils s'intègrent au mieux au Cottage tout en laissant entrer la lumière dans mes pièces.

My parents helped me a lot on this project: we had decided on a budget and some decisions were also taken to keep within the budget.

Mes parents m'ont beaucoup aidée sur ce projet : nous avions décidé d'un budget et certaines décisions ont aussi été prises de façon à respecter ce budget.

It seemed I had thought of everything until some day I woke up and it hit me... The dormers would need to be painted before their first winter. There was no way I was going to climb on my roof to paint those, so I called a painter and the quote was delirious, just because he needed a sacaffolding to do the job. I had completely forgotten to take this into account and it was out of budget... Was it the end of my dream?

 Je croyais que j'avais pensé à tout jusqu'à ce qu'un matin, je me réveille avec une illumination... Les chiens assis allaient devoir être peints avant leur premier hiver. Hors de question que je grimpe sur mon toit pour le faire, mais le peintre contacté m'a donné un devis délirant juste parce qu'il devait monter un échafaudage. Je n'avais pas du tout prévu ça dans mon budget, déjà entièrement utilisé. Était-ce la fin de mon rêve ?

Because the actress's family name happens to be "Dormer"... I'm wondering how she would feel about sitting permanently on Cottage's roof... Cottage is a man, he tells me he wouldn't mind in the least...

Pour commencer, on trouve beaucoup, beaucoup de photos de l'actrice Nathalie Dormer, plus ou moins dénudée - j'en ai choisie une soft pour le blog - dès que l'on lance la recherche en anglais car son nom de famille se trouve vouloir dire "chien assis" en anglais !

Now, I bet you're smiling! I found a couple of those adorable pictures just because dormer happens to be called "sitting dogs" in French.

Bon, là, je parie que vous souriez ! Et oui, on trouve tout plein d'adorables toutous assis !

This what I got when tiping in French "sitting dog Brittany": a nice lady wearing the typical headdress from her town and her dog sitting next to her!

Et voilà sur quoi on tombe en tapant "chien assis Bretagne"... Et oui, parfois les moteurs de recherche ont raison de ma patience !
