A Substitute Haven

Wandering Around Cottage - August 2017 Edition

As I had done last summer, I decided to take a week away from Cottage this year. I didn't go far for all kinds of reasons: I went to an adorable seaside town located an hour and half to the west of Cottage. It was still Brittany, but not the same "département" (a sub-division of French regions) anymore. The "département"'s name is Finistère, which means "Land's end" as it's the "Westernest" part of France. Shadow and I stayed for a week in a town called Roscoff, known, among many things, for its onions (more on that later).

Roscoff in the morning mist

I had rented a little holiday cottage located in a farm. That kind of holiday rental began after WWII, I think, as a way for farmers to earn a little more money. They could rent a room (a little like a B&B) or a self-catering cottage located on their property. We call that a "gite" and I often use that for my holidays as their website is well-designed for me - they indicate clearly if pets are allowed or not.

You can see above, nestled in the onion fields, the farm where our little substitute was. As you can see, I don't choose my holiday rentals for their luxury. I don't need a swimming-pool or a hot tub. But I do need a little outdoor space for Shadow to stretch his four legs, I do need windows for Shadow to look outside while I'm gone and a little bit of a kitchen for me.

The cottage wasn't perfect by decoration magazine's standards, but it was perfect for us. Also, one of the things I love every time I take a vacation away is falling asleep at night imagining how I would redo the whole place. You don't think I should talk to the doctor about that, do you?

Shadow made himself at home. He even found a way to drink fresh water as he never ever drinks from his water bowl. It was a little more complicated than in our bathtub, but we managed. He also made friends with one of the three dogs of the farm. He curious little dog who had his ears cut square. Shadow didn't fight for once because he knew he wasn't really home, he didn't have to fight for his territory...

I'm telling you all this, but really, what I want to talk about is the small bedroom. Not the fact that I had only brought one pillow so Shadow and I had to share. Not the fact that it was all purple and grey and that despite the fact that it was very chic, it was really not me. No, let's talk about that small UPVC  (huh) window rather...

This was the view from the window... I know, UPVC doesn't seem so important now, does it? I had a really nice view on the field, the loch of Laber and the land you can see in the distance is the island of Batz. The star on the following map shows you aproximately where the farm was and how the "loch"  looks from above.

I understood thanks to reading your posts from all over the world that the  tide isn't the same all over the ocean. In Brittany, the sea moves a lot and it gives a completely different view depending on the time of the day. Above you can see that at low tide the Laber loch  is completely empty.  So the view from the window changed all the time and I didn't have enough of one week to admire it.

View under the rain, the last day.

There were many things to see in the area. Wonderful walks in the nature, magical castles to visit and breathtaking churches to discover. I've taken many pictures and some will make it to a post on their own in the future. I'm sure you'll enjoy those places as much as I have. I even think I'll need to go back there as I didn't have time to do everything I wanted!

See you soon,

A la prochaine fois,

Hasta la proxima,

PS1: You can see on the pictures that Shadow's fur is growing on his back, but you can still see where they had to shave him for surgery. You can also see that one of his eye is often closed, but that is also improving. Of course yesterday when I began typing this post, he suddenly arrived running and collapsed on the floor. He had been in a fight, he had fur going away from everywere, he was full of the other cat saliva on his neck, his ear was bleeding and he had hurt one of his leg... It's a good thing that I'm a teacher/cottage renovator/cat nurse!!!

PS2: I really enjoyed my week away, but when I came back to Cottage, I found him more dashing than before - there's so much more light coming in Cottage than in the rental!

The New Star Of Cottage

Living-Room Project - The Stove Reveal

Cottage and I have been waiting for a long time for this day. So have my readers... Here it is. The stove is here!

I was over-excited the day they brought it in and surprised that it didn't take that long to install since most of the technical work had been done the previous week.

They lit the first fire and told me to keep it alive for at least four hours, all windows open to get rid of the smell the enamel would produce the first time the stove is used. You can imagine that I was a very good girl and didn't let the fire die. It was a good thing it was summer, though, as all windows were opened... Even so, it did warm the room to a very comfortable 72°F, something that is rarey achieved in a stone cottage, even when it's hot outside !

The stove hasn't been lit again since it's summer... And I'm having trouble having the wood delivered for next winter... Can you imagine the delivery guy told me they would only deliver on tarry roads... The street Cottage is on is tarred, but not the pavement, so they told me they'll left the wood on the road and I'll have to carry it in my garden piece by piece... But our street is very narrow and if they do that it'll block the traffic, so it's not a possibility. I'm trying to find a solution...

I may have unintentionnally mislead a few of you when I wrote that we would be talking paint "colours" in this post... I should have written "paint" and that's it.

I believe in harmony of colours in small cottages. I also believe in light colours in rooms that have small windows. I believe in having only one big feature in a room. I believe in simplicity to create a serene atmosphere.

For all those reasons, I had decided a while ago that the living-room would be white. Now, which white was a question that kept my mind busy a little longer. I bought a few sample by Farrow & Ball to try them on my walls. But compared to the dining-room's beautiful white sand colour that is Pordic White, they all looked too grey or too muddy or too dull or too yellow. So the only way to go seemed to paint the living-room Pordic White as well.

It's a little complicated because if you remember when I painted the dining-room, Pordic White isn't actually a shade by Farrow & Ball. It's my own mix of half Wimborne White and half All White. If it was easy to create the mix for the very small space the dining-room is, it was a little more complicated for the living-room as I wanted the stairwell and the landing to be painted in the same shade since they are all connected. I ordered the paint at my usual Farrow & Ball stockist and then I went to a local hardware store to get a big empty lidded paint bucket. Can you believe they didn't have any and didn't want to give me or sell me one from their mixing paint stand. So I went back home, left my pride there, put on my stripped dress and went back... Magically a male seller agreed to give me a lidded bucket that was used in their display ;)

The two painted mixed together like a charm and as soon as the first coat began drying I fell in love again with the subtle white it is (it takes a few days for the pigments to give their real colour) and the way it changes depending on the time of the day or the weather.

One of the talks I had with myself was about the alcove behind the stove. I had seen some lovely examples on Pinterest of dark blue alcoves behind white stoves or of tiled alcoves... But I finally thought that simplicity was best given the fact that I have a stone wall that already catches the eye and also given the fact that the stove is a little busier than what I had in mind at first.

Now that the paint is mixed and stored in its lidded bucket, it's best to use it fast I guess. So I began working on the stairwell and the landing. I've made progress, I swear, though I really don't understand why a Petite Blonde thought it was a great idea to keep a peaked ceiling and showing beams in here!

I'm on a little paint break for a few days as my blood pressure suddenly dropped and I feel like I'm on a boat as soon as I stand up... So climbing on a step ladder with a paint brush taped to a curtain pole isn't really an option. I'm having trouble explaining to the doctor why I can't use my garden chair, though... Nevermind, I'll lay on the sofa admiring my stove and mantel!

See you next time,

A la prochaine fois,

Hasta la proxima,

PS1 : Just  in case you're a foreigner living the dream (or nightmare) of renovating an old cottage in Northen Brittany, the company that took care of gracing Cottage with a stove is  Maréchal & Brilleaud. You can read here if you want to see how the mantel was done.

PS2: The mantel is painted my usual favourite All White by Farrow & Ball.

PS3: Not pictured in this post: the mess that is behind the sofa, the right wall where I might have a "brand new" TV stand and the back wall on which the first coat of paint might already be applied...

Obsession

Living Room Transformation - one step closer

Brittany seems to be stuck in November even if we are officially only a day away from the "summer" holidays.

I spend the evening preparing salads for tomorrow's "last day of school" picnic, hoping against hope that it won't be raining. I also have an "Italian taste" bread raising on the bathroom radiator (yes, in July). It'll need about an hour before going to the oven, so why don't we chat a little while I'm trying not to fall asleep.

Cottage when I met him.
So, back to the post title. I've been obsessed with stone cottages since I was a little girl and my uncle bought an old stone farm in Southern France. I wanted my very own stone house from that day.

Cottage last summer... Back in those days when it was sunny...
So when I arrived in Brittany and began visiting houses to buy, I was naturally drawn to stone cottages. I didn't see that many places. But weirdly enough, the one I chose is a white cottage, as you know. Not because I changed my mind...

Living room under previous owner's reign.

Cottage's walls are made of stone, they are just covered in a white coating. Indeed, right after the second World War, the trend was to build houses in concrete and stone walls were considered as completely dated, so some of them were covered in a coating. Cottage was among those.

Wall in one of the bedroom (now my office).
I could guess the treasure under the cover when I first visited as Cottage has a twin (there are two semi-detached cottages) which wasn't covered and there was one part of a wall in a bedroom upstairs that had the stone appearing.

Beginning to rip the fake stone wallpaper...
When I began remodeling the living-room, I wanted some of the gorgeous stone to be revealed.

The square that let me think there was still a fireplace behind... (and gorgeous previous owner paint job)

First things first, I tore down the stone wallpaper that had been part of the decoration of the previous owners because there's nothing worse than fake stone in a real stone cottage.

The wall I chose to keep uncovered is the wall that is adjoining the twin cottage so that it wouldn't bring any cold in winter even if it stays without insulation.

Before we removed everything, the only clue I had about an old fireplace was the square you can see on some pictures. I was hoping to find a gorgeous stone mantel or at least a brick one as was traditional in this area... A girl can dream, right?

The dream was not to become reality. For some reason, the fireplace had been taken down at some point. All that was left was a dark hole!

Parfois trop optimiste...

I decided to cover that hole with drywall until the next phase of renovation.

Two things were missing to make that wall perfect... A mantel and a stove.

First evening at Cottage after the huge living-room renovation.
I found the mantel for a song and just put it there for now. The stove won't cost a song, more like an opera... and a long one by Wagner!

I know a few readers are disappointed that things aren't going faster at Cottage. I accept cash to pay for the stove and mind you, I don't want a cheap one! The cats and I are enjoying the progress and waiting patiently for the next phase.

Preparing my pupils for their exam took all of my time in June. I didn't have much time for the blog or for decoration projects, but I'm proud of the progress my pupils made and so were they, so they gifted me a lovely bouquet, which definitely made up for all those evening spent working.

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS: When the summer holidays start, I promise to squeeze a few Cottage project in between taking some me time, wandering around Cottage to discover new places and preparing the brand new school curriculum some genius decided to create to spoil our summer... So hopefully, I'll have more projects to show you!
