Is There A Kitchen In The House?

When I was looking for a cottage to buy. I was kind of hoping to find one that would have an old kitchen, something looking like that.

Quand je visitais des maisons, à la recherche du cottage parfait, je rêvais de trouver une cuisine vieillotte bien à mon goût...

And when I chose my cottage, this is how the kitchen looked like! Not even close from the inspiration, is it?

Et voilà à quoi ressemblait la cuisine de la maison que j'ai choisi! On est loin du compte, hein?

The two beautiful sliding door cupboard had to go away when I changed the floor because they were sealed on the also beautiful (ggghhh, sorry, I chocked on my tea just writing that word) tiles.

Les deux magnifiques placards aux portes coulissantes (les bons jours) ont dû disparaître quand j'ai changé le sol car ils étaient scellés sur l'ancien non moins magnifique carrelage.

Since then, I've coped the best I could with what I had. Please admire my "pantry", also known as the cheapest shelves I could find on a second-hand website. And my amazing cooking range! And believe it or not, every meal eaten at The Little White House is home made there!

Depuis, c'est un peu le camping dans la cuisine. Une superbe étagère achetée pour trois fois rien sur Le Bon Coin sert de garde-manger. Ne manquez pas d'admirer ma cuisinière de compétition!

Improving the kitchen is my goal for the next summer. There are many decisions to take and a lot of inspiration to go through and a few DIY projects to complete along the way. I hope you'll follow my wandering mind through all this, because those orange walls and this non-existant shelf on the half-wall have to disappear!

Améliorer la cuisine à l'été prochain est ma prochaine grande étape. Avant d'en arriver là, il y a beaucoup de décisions à prendre, plein d'inspiration à éplucher et quelques petits projets "bricolage" à terminer! J'espère que vous parviendrez à suivre les méandres de mon esprit quand il est en mode "je change tout", parce que ces murs oranges et cet encadrement entre la cuisine et la salle-à-manger doivent être améliorés ou je fais un malheur!

Château de Bienassis

Are you ready to go visit a castle nearby the Little White House while I'm still studying my new curriculum? Please, be nice and don't tell me how much fun you have while I'm here at my desk!

Etes-vous prêt pour une nouvelle excursion non loin de mon petit cottage? Je vais vous laisser y aller seul, si ça ne vous dérange pas, parce que moi, j'ai encore beaucoup de travail sur mon programme de 5ème.

So here's where you're heading, about three quarter of an hour East of the Little White House.

Vous partez donc à trois quart d'heure à l'est du cottage, à Erquy, où se situe le château de Bienassis.

The very first castle of Bienassis (thus called because it meant "well located") was only a wood tower with one single level. It meant that the lord of the castle slept in the same room as his wife, but also as his children, his servants, his horses, his pigs... Not so romantic, is it?  Maybe we should remember that the next time we think our houses are too small!

Le tout premier château de Bienassis, ainsi nommé car il était bien situé, était une tour d'un étage en bois. Il n'y avait donc qu'une seule pièce où le seigneur dormait avec sa femme, bien sûr, mais aussi ses enfants, ses domestiques, ses chevaux et même ses cochons! Si vous imaginiez des scènes intimes et romantiques entre le Seigneur et sa Dame... Ce n'est pas encore pour cette époque!

During the 14th century, an other castle was built on the same location. The tour guide said it was then considered as the most beautiful Renaissance castle in Brittany. It was probably true in the 14th century, but just a century later, an other one won that title, I took you there in June, but if you missed that, you can visit it here.

Pendant le XIVème siècle, un château de type Renaissance fut construit sur ce même site. La guide affirme qu'il était alors considéré comme le plus beau château de Bretagne... Bon, peut-être à cette époque, mais au siècle suivant, je suis sure qu'il a été détrôné par un autre château que je vous ai déjà emmené voir. Si vous avez manqué cette visite, allez-y vite, c'est par ici!

The front stairs are divided by a little ship bow like stone terrace, which was probably my favourite part of the castle.

 

Il était interdit de prendre des photos à l'intérieur, donc les images de l'intérieur sont des scans de cartes postales... J'ai fait ce que j'ai pu pour vous emmener à l'intérieur, même si la qualité est très médiocre.

Taking pictures inside is forbidden, so I scanned some postcards so you could have a look inside, even if it's not of the best quality.

I don't know if you can imagine, but this magnificent castle was used as a prison during the French Revolution. The then owner of the castle loved horses. He went to England to buy some new horses and while he was away, his castle was taken and turned into a prison.

Au moment de la Révolution française, le propriétaire du château est un amoureux des chevaux. Il part en Angleterre pour se procurer de nouvelles bêtes et pendant son absence, le bâtiment est confisqué et transformé en prison!

During World War II, a German garrison settled there on the first and second floor and the owners of the castle lived in the third floor (the attic) as long as the war lasted.

Pendant la seconde Guerre Mondiale, une garnison allemande s'est installé au rez-de-chaussée et au premier étage. Les châtelains n'eurent d'autre choix que de vivre dans les combles.

Around the castle is a wonderful garden, but if you have a look at the grass, you can tell, we've had an unusually hot summer here... Brittany is known for its green gardens... Not so much this year!

There even were a few ripe figs as early as August... Unseen before in Brittany!

Et pour tous ceux qui refuseraient de croire que l'on a eu un été exceptionnel en Bretagne, regardez comme l'herbe est jaune et comme les figues sont en avance (la photo a été prise en août).

Last Days Of Summer

I know you've all been back to full "back to school" mode for already two weeks, but here in France, the summer holidays started two weeks later, so school begins again only today Monday, September 2nd.

L'école reprend ce matin du 2 septembre et on sent que l'été tire à sa fin.

It's time to enjoy the last "empty-your-attic" sales in seaside villages (that's the beach you can see in the background: isn't my life difficult?) and time to have the last naps in the shade.

Il est temps de savourer les derniers vide-greniers en bord de mer (et oui, c'est bien la plage en arrière-plan) et les dernières siestes à l'ombre.

It's time to hit the veranda for a good sleep when the mornings are chilly and to admire the clouds making their come back to the skies of Brittany.

Il est temps de se réfugier dans la véranda pour dormir lorsque les matins sont frais et d'admirer le retour des nuages dans le ciel de Bretagne.

Casual Teas in the sun turned to Business Casual Teas as I have to work a lot, having to teach two curriculum I never taught before!

Les moments de détente avec une tasse de thé ont laissé place peu à peu à des pauses thé beaucoup plus studieuses pour préparer les cours.

Somehow, I found a few evenings nights, to work on the fall collection for the shop. I called it "Beautifall"! I'm giving you only sneak peek, in true Magali style and you'll have to head to the shop here to see those goodies I found.

J'ai aussi  pris quelques soirées nuits pour préparer la collection d'automne pour la boutique. Vous avez ici un aperçu, mais vous pouvez faire vos curieux et jeter un oeil à la boutique ici.

I still have tons of ideas and tons of things to do in the cottage: I'll show you everything,  I promise you won't miss anything! Let me just adjust to my new schedule for a few days.

Je vais sûrement avoir un peu de mal à écrire le blog de façon très régulière en septembre, devant m'habituer à deux nouvelles écoles et deux programmes que je ne maîtrise pas encore parfaitement bien. Mais je ferai mon possible pour être sur tous les fronts!

Ne vous inquiétez pas, il reste des tonnes de projets pour le cottage, des tonnes de choses à vous montrer, vous n'en manquerez pas une miette.
