My Cottage Floor Plan - part 4

So, now that we've talked about cozy rooms, open floor plans and my soft spot for corridors, it's time to show you a little what's going on at the cottage.

Maintenant que nous avons admiré quelques pièces bien cozy, envisagé les grandes pièces à vivre et que j'ai confessé mon faible pour les couloirs, il est temps de voir ce qui se passe au cottage.

Just because so many people commented on my beautiful green beams, I thought you'd love to see them again!

This is how I know for sure that there used to be an entrance corridor in the cottage.

When I bought it, though, the corridor had already been torn down on one side and the front door opened directly in the living-room.

Le couloir d'origine de la maison avait déjà disparu quand je l'ai acheté. J'ai décidé de garder cette idée pour trois raisons.

a) La fenêtre du salon est toute petite et la porte d'entrée vitrée permet de récupérer beaucoup de luminosité.

b) Je compte refaire un jour la véranda d'entrée et alors la maison aura une toute petite entrée indépendante.

c) J'ai remonté le mur de la salle-à-manger et deux murs entre cette pièce et le salon me semblaient beaucoup trop.

I chose to keep that idea for three main reasons:
a) the living-room has the tiniest window and as the front door is mainly a huge glass area, it helps keeping the room bright.
b) I have a little project to rebuild the front porch some day and that will serve as a small entranceto the cottage.
c) As I decided to rebuild the dining-room wall, I didn't want to have two walls separating the living-room from the dining-room.

Still, it doesn't look exactly the same anymore... Here's a picture taken during the week, from the threshold of the same front door.

This is not a full reveal or anything, but it's an improvement, don't you think? The sofa is not my dream sofa, but it has to do for now. I have no idea if the furniture will stay long like that... probably not.

Ce n'est pas terminé, les meubles ne resteront peut-être même pas dans cette disposition, le canapé finira bien un jour par être changé... Mais bon, il y a déjà du chemin de parcouru!

You may notice I went open plan for one thing not that many people mention: the office. I hate working all day in a closed room, so my desk is in the living-room. 

So this is how it looks like on the right of the entrance door... And on the left, it used to look like this.

Le salon se trouve a droite en entrant et sur la gauche, il y avait cet horrible placard dont les portes n'avaient de coulissantes que le nom. Ce n'était pas la peine d'envisager attraper en vitesse un écharpe avant de partir travailler... Il fallait démonter les portes à chaque fois que l'on voulait saisir quelque chose entreposé dans le placard...

I was welcomed every evening by that very cottage-y closet whose sliding door refused to slide whenever you wanted to put something in it or whenever you wanted to take something from it in a hurry in the morning.

Aujourd'hui, le placard a disparu... Il reste du travail dans ce coin, peinture, dénicher le meuble de mes rêves... Mais je ne jure plus sur mon placard tous les matins!!!

Again, this sideboard might not be the one I truly dream of, but it's so much better than what I had before, I'm just grateful every evening it's here!

So, you've seen left and right of the door. But if you're looking straight ahead when you come in, this is what you saw, with my beloved sliding-doors on the left!

Tout droit en entrant, on a l'escalier... Et une petite porte qui a aujourd'hui disparu.

 And today:

The first step had to be changed and as I haven't decided yet what to do with the staircase, it is still in this shameful state.

The Corridor

My Cottage Floor Plan - Part 3

My cottage is the kind of basic fisherman's house here in Brittany: a door and one window on each side.

Mon cottage est vraiment la traditionnelle maison de pêcheur avec une porte encadrée de deux fenêtres.

So I suspected that originally there was an entrance corridor with the staircase and three doors to the living-room (that would have been called the main room), the kitchen and the bedroom.

Je soupçonnais donc que dans le plan originel de la maison, il y avait un couloir d'entrée desservant le salon, la cuisine et la chambre. Cela s'est révélé vrai une fois le faux plafond tombé: le couloir était donc peint en jaune et le salon en vert!

It turned out true when I (and by "I", I don't really mean "I") ripped the fake ceiling that the previous owners had put on the beams.

As you can see, the previous-previous owners had painted the ceiling in the corridor yellow and in the living-room green.

Please admire how I staged all the pipes to take this picture... Notice also how the huge vaccuum has the same accent colour as the ceiling... I put so much thought in that!

Du coup, je me suis posée la question du couloir: le rétablir pour rendre son caractère originel à la maison ou pas? Peut-être pensez-vous que je suis folle car personne n'aime les couloirs. Eh, bien, moi je pense que cela peut avoir beaucoup de charme, notamment lorsque les portes sont jolies!

Anyway, came the time when I wondered if the original corridor that had disappeared at some point should come back or not...

I know, many people hates corridors, but I believe they can have potential as doors can be pretty features. Have a look down there if you think I'm crazy.

I love that because it's a small space in which you don't stay for hours, you can have fun with colours and patterns and won't get tired of it.

Je crois aussi que décorer un couloir peut être très motivant: comme c'est une pièce dans laquelle on ne passe pas des heures, on peut se permettre des motifs dont on se lasserait plus facilement dans le salon.

I had fun in my previous flat with faded pink walls in the corridor. I never regreted that choice, even if every one thought it was stupid before they actually saw the result. I'm sorry I don't have a picture. It was BB (Before Blogging).

Sometimes in old houses, there's a fabulous patterned floor in corridors, like this one.

Parfois aussi d'anciens carreaux de ciments peuvent permettre de délimiter l'espace sans qu'aucune autre décoration ne soit nécessaire.

Had I found that kind of vintage tiles in my cottage, I wouldn't have hesitated one second, I'd have kept them. 

Si j'avais pu découvrir de tels carreaux dans ma maison, je les aurais gardés sans hésitation, mais comme je n'ai trouvé que de la terre mouillée, je pouvais aussi envisager une porte d'entrée donnant directement dans le salon.

Since there was none of those lovely tiles, but basically only dirt, I had the possibility to get rid of any corridor: the entrance door would lead to the living-room.

I got from some of your comments that you are eager to see what choices I've made for my cottage... But can you wait a little more?

 I'm a bit late in my posting schedule, due to a hurt cat who is limping like crazy. The vet told me he would be ok if he took the medicine he gave (and by "gave" I mean "sold") me. But that's easier said than done. I couldn't find him anywhere today... So before it got dark, I went calling for him all around the cottage, which means mostly very muddy (thanks to the rain) fields!!! Good news, I found him; bad news, it took an hour so I'm running late.

J'espère que, malgré vos commentaires impatients, vous pourrez attendre quelques jours avant que je vous présente les décisions prises pour mon cottage... Je suis un peu en retard dans mes projets d'écriture pour le blog! En tout cas je tiens à remercier tous les lecteurs qui ont contribué à l'enrichissement de la partie 1 et de la partie 2 de cette série par leurs réflexions laissées à la fin des articles.

Simple Plan

My Cottage Floor Plan - part 2

I would like to thank each and every one of you who joined the discussion in the comments of part 1. You truly made the post ten times more interesting.

Merci tout d'abord à tout ceux qui ont apporté leur grain de sel dans la partie 1, rendant ainsi l'article plus passionnant que ce que j'avais écrit.

I was surprised how many people seem to like small cozy rooms.

Well, right now, if you're remodeling in France or building a house from scratch, the look people are going for is an open floor plan where the kitchen, dining-room and living-room have no separation.

J'ai été surprise par le nombre de personnes qui semblaient apprécier les petits espaces cozy, alors qu'il me semblait qu'en ce moment tout le monde souhaitait de grandes pièces à vivre décloisonnées. Beaucoup des maisons que j'avais visitées avaient été ainsi transformées.

When all of my walls were torn down in order to create the new slab of the house, I had a clean slate to create what I wanted. Both exciting and scary. I looked for some open floor plan inspiration to see if that's where I wanted the house to go.

Quand tous les murs du rez-de-chaussée ont dû être tombés pour couler la nouvelle dalle, je me suis retrouvée avec une ardoise blanche et des cloisons à redessiner (ou pas) où bon me semblait.

Given that my fisherman's cottage is tiny (downstairs is about 500 square feet), I was torn between recreating the former walls or seizing the chance to live in a completely different space organisation.

So I listed pros and cons:

J'ai donc fait une liste de pour et de contre:

Pros:

• giving the illusion of a larger living space;
• being able to talk to your guests while cooking;
• having a feeling of harmony downstairs;
• going with the flow of fashion (might seem stupid, but who isn't influenced by what everybody else's does?)

Le Pour:

• donner une illusion d'espace dans un lieu relativement petit;
• pouvoir parler à mes invités tout en cuisinant;
• donner une impression d'harmonie au rez-de-chaussée;
• suivre la mode (ça a peut-être l'air ridicule comme critère, mais qui n'est pas influencé par ce qui se fait en ce moment?)

Cons:

• In such a small cottage, the kitchen is also the laundry room... which can be very noisy!
• Old houses were not built with an open floor plan... Somehow old cottage and open-plan don't go together, though, I did find really great inspiration picture where the "cottage feel" is overflowing the open floor plan.
• The tiniest the cottage is, the less wall surface you have and then if you get rid of all the inside walls, where do you put your furniture? I'm no minimalist, so I had to take that in consideration.

Le Contre:

•  Dans une petite maison, la cuisine est aussi la buanderie et avoir son lave-linge dans son salon, c'est tout de suite moins glamour.
• Les vieilles maisons étaient conçues de façon cloisonnée. N'était-ce pas trahir la maison que de lui supprimer tous ses murs?
• Plus la maison est petite, plus la surface en mur devient restreinte, du coup, où placer les meubles si je n'ai plus de murs intérieurs. Dans la mesure où je ne suis pas une minimaliste du meuble, c'est quelque chose que j'ai dû prendre en considération.

This was when I learnt that remodeling a house is like being married: you need to compromise. You'll have to come back later to see what choices I made, if you don't mind. I've been gardening in the cold today (I got tired of waiting for real spring), so I'm really exausted and I'm off to bed.

C'est à peu près à cette époque que j'ai compris que rénover une maison, c'est comme être mariée. Il est indispensable de faire quelques compromis. Cela ne vous ennuie pas de revenir un peu plus tard pour découvrir quels compromis j'ai fait. Je suis trop fatiguée ce soir pour continuer cet article... Je me suis finalement décidée à faire du jardinage de printemps par ce temps hivernal et ça m'a épuisée!

My Cottage Floor Plan - Part 1

In this month series, I'll share with you all the ideas I had about organising the downstairs of my little cottage when it was renovated.

La série du mois est consacrée à l'organisation des pièces à vivre. Une question qui m'a occupé l'esprit de longues heures quand j'ai refait le rez-de-chaussée du cottage.

Not everyone has the same needs. It all depends on your everyday habits, how many people live in the house, the atmosphere of your home, the way light flows in the rooms (or doesn't!) and so many different things that it can be overwhelming to make decisions, whether you need to make them because you're remdeling or because you're building a new house.

Tout le monde n'attend pas la même chose du plan d'une maison: cela dépend de vos petites habitudes quotidiennes, du nombre de personne qui vivent dans la maison, de l'atmosphère des lieux, de la façon dont la lumière entre par les fenêtres (ou n'entre pas!) et de tant d'autres choses que prendre une décision peut donner le vertige, que l'on doive le faire lors d'une rénovation ou d'une construction de maison.

My first tip is to go back to basic or to your instinct. By collecting pictures of rooms that spoke to me, I was able to get a pretty good idea of the atmosphere I wanted in the cottage. As you can see, I'm usually drawn to cozy rooms... But everybody was advising me otherwise! Open floor-plan is all the rage in France right now!

Mon premier truc a été de me faire un petit book de photos qui me parlaient pour une raison ou pour une autre, souvent pour une raison inconnue au départ, d'ailleurs. Cela m'a aidé à me faire une idée de l'atmosphère que je voulais chez moi. Je suis naturellement attirée par des espaces cozy, quand tout le monde me conseillait de créer un espace tout ouvert moderne... Cas de conscience!
