What else?

The Kitchen Lighting Series - 4 -

After I made my enamel coffee pot turned lamp dream come true, I thought the only missing light in the kitchen was a wall lamp... You may have noticed that to the right of my window, I still have a light bulb coming out of the wall... Not very cottage-y.

I was browsing "Le Bon Coin" (French Craigslist), looking for a wall lamp that would be cheap and pretty, when I found this...

Actually, it looked like that when I found it.

It was love at first sight. But there were three problems: I didn't need it at all, at 30 €, it was not that cheap and it was more than an hour away from the Cottage, which would mean losing a whole Sunday afternoon and a lot of money in gas (a lot more expensive in France than in the USA).

Still, I saved it to my favourites on the website, thinking it would sell in no time.

J'ai quand même sauvegardé l'annonce, pensant qu'elle allait vite disparaître.

The ads stay on this website two months. So two months minus one day later, I checked back and the lamp was still here. Maybe it was fate?

I emailed the seller, asking if he was sometimes coming to the area I live in. I thought that was very unlikely. He emailed back that indeed he had nothing to do near my Cottage, but he was visiting a friend that day half way between his home and mine... The town happened to be the one I work in part time and was working in that very day! Fate, I told you!

So we met after school and when I saw the lamp, it was even more beautiful than on the picture.

I was so happy to bring it back home that I sang the whole time while I was driving.

It's an old coffee grinder with every part still in place and working. The owner had inherited it from his uncle who had turned it into a lamp and he didn't like it. I did!

For now, I haven't done anything to it except for washing it and adding a lampshade. I think it's a beauty in itself.

Cottage absolutely loves the cosy light it creates in the room. What do you think?

The pictures might have been taken on the new countertop... I'll show you the cabinets (minus the one that isn't there yet) soon.

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: I have no idea why I keep having coffee themed lamps when according to everyone I make a lousy coffee...

PS2: I might have received this week by mail a wall lamp that I'll show you once it's in place, probably this summer...

PS3: This morning for the first time in five days, I thought I loved my kitchen when I walked in it. It took me that long to get used to it... I had lived with a mismatched one for so long!

PS4: I'm partying with some awesome bloggers.

  1. Good morning dear Magali,

Cottage is absolutely right - the lamp is so lovely! Of course it has been fate and good luck too. So your kitchen is nearly finished after all? I am so curious and as my live is a bit troublesome at the moment, you could really cheer me up by some cosy kitchen photos...
    Have a nice weekend!
    Yours Sarah

    1. Oh, I hadn't though of a coffee themed sconce... I found one that is farily neutral... Should I add it coffee beans as pendants?

  3. What a great combination! Now you can -finally- see what you're doing when maken coffee ;-) Haha, this proves that everything which has to do with coffee (the grinder and the pot) deserve to be put "under a light", in my language this means they deserve to be put in the spotlights, in the attention of people... Which is logical, because these items are real beauties!! Enjoy your finds, and the fact that fate does seem to work for you !!! Grtz,, Marcy

  4. Yes, fate has intervened and now you have a second gorgeous lamp, which makes me think that I now need a second one, and I do actually have a place for another one.
I'm sooooooo looking forward to seeing the new kitchen but I'm sure you're going to keep us guessing for ages !

  5. Love the story of the lamp! It is just perfect...:) So excited to see your cabinets. Have a wonderfu Friday and weekend! Oh...how much is gas over there? I feel bad for you if it is even more there! It is ridiculously priced here right now...we are paying an average of $3.69-$3.79 per gallon right now...craziness!

    Blessings, Vicky

    Bon weekend. Bises. Babette

  9. Oh Magali! I love it, it is full of personality and gives a soft light. Perfect for your cottage. Isn't it wonderful when a home comes together on found items? The house is becoming more of a reflection of you and that is what makes your home so special : ). Patty/NS

  11. The only thing would have made this better is if he'd discounted the price for you! Definitely meant to be. I love coffee, I love this lamp.

  12. I think that is a steal and to have it already set up with a light feature would easily be that much just to add the lighting, so you really scored and it looks fantastic!

  13. Yes, it was fate and the little coffee grinder turned lamp is going to be perfect in your kitchen for years! I really do love it, it’s old and antique like the cottage! I’m so happy to hear how your kitchen is making you happy now. It takes a lot of decisions and determination to make dreams come true. Good for you Magali!
