Sweet Dreams

Watching TV With Magali (And Possibly Some Cats) - July 2015 Edition

You might have thought that I took a vacation to the Caribbean as I've been away from Blogland for a few days... Except for the fact that I'm on the seaside, it's as far as possible to it! I've been busy emptying half of my Cottage for the renovation and moving to a substitute cottage for a little while. Then the renovation began, I had to play Chief to six men all while working and it wore me down.

It might seem weird to write a TV show inspiration post when the substitute cottage doesn't have a TV, or rather it has one, but it doesn't work... But my house is such a mess right now, that I need a dose of prettiness!

So, please be nice with me and say you don't mind me taking you back to Emily's beach house...

I'm going to tell you how it's inspiring me for my own dining nook...

First, something I've already added to my own dining nook. The flowy curtains. It adds charms without blocking the light. I love them!

I love the built-in hutch behind Emily here... Not something happening at Cottage... But a hutch really says cosy dining area to me... Of course, you've never noticed mine in any previous pictures since I haven't told you its story yet!

A table is kind of compulsory in a dining area, don't you think? Emily has a lovely very clean-lined wood one that is surrounded by wood chairs at the beginning and then by slipcovered ones. Because, neddless to say, revenge leaves plenty of time to sew slipcovers, unlike renovation....

Lighting is also really important so you can change the atmosphere depending if you have company or spend a lonely birthday evening...

Since we're talking about lighting, let me tell you that Emily didn't like that gorgeous chandelier very much... I liked it and would be OK if the set designer decided to send it to me (you never know...). Also, since they'll be paying for the delivery, they could add the fun seagull painting to the package... If that's not too much to ask!

So at some point, she changed it for this one.

So, the elements I'd like to keep in my own dining nook are : the brightness of it, the flowy curtains, the hutch, the accents of wood, the accents of seaglass colours, the different ways to light the room.

Now, you've seen in the partial reveal that some of these elements are already there, some are still missing.

I'd love to tell you I'm hard at work at it, but currently, the dining nook looks like that:

It is used as the headquarters during the upstairs renovation... Taped on the old plastic tablecloth I found somewhere are the telephone numbers of all my workers and mine in case we need to talk to each others, the project on blue print (homemade) and the weekly planning for the workers! Not very magazine worthy, don't you think?

And here's my living-room loaded with all the stuff that used to be upstairs. Maybe you can spot a bed-frame or a even a matress! If you think this is rather ugly, have a look at how my bedroom looks lately!

I'm wondering how comfortable are those big bins to sleep on?

I'm pretty sure you know understand why I didn't have time to write or to read your blogs lately!

I'll try and write a post about my substitute cottage when I can.

See you as soon as possible,

A bientôt,

PS: Days at this time of year are very long in Brittany... And I haven't the sun going down for a while as I'm so tired in the evening that I fall asleep while the sun is still up!

  1. OH, you were talking about Emily/Amanda, as we refer to her at our house!!! You certainly had reason to find another cottage to care for you while your own is being renovated! How long is your upstairs going to be that way? An estimate? (We know they always go over!) Hopefully, things will go smoothly, and you will move back to cottage quickly. Best wishes.

  2. I can only imagine how exhausting this process must be! I am happy to hear you have another cottage to stay in while the construction is going on at yours. Hopefully it will go quickly and you can move back in and make it even more beautiful that it already was. You are out of school for summer soon aren't you? Have a wonderful week...and I look forward to seeing temporary cottage in a future post!

Estare esperando ansiosamente tus comentarios.

  9. Magali, now I see the inspiration of your dining nook with a sea side vibe in the tv series Revenge. Don't you wish you had the budget like tv companies? I'm happy for you having the renovation done upstairs. A peak of your temporary cottage would be nice. Kitties doing ok? Kathleen in Az

    1. The temporary cottage is not perfect, but it's a safe plac to sleep at night and leave one of the cat in a quiet place when I go to work. The two other kitties stayed at Cottage as they don't like to travel, but I visit them twice a day. I'll take some pictures next week!

  12. Your cottage looks like my guest room right now. I can barely open the door, but it isn't in remodeling. We have lots of wedding creativity going on and it will soon be over and the room will be back to normal.

I love the shot of that beach house. What is the television show?

  17. I'm also happy to know you have a substitute cottage to stay while renovations are being done. Remodels are so stressful and exciting all at the same time, but can be hard to get through! Can't wait to see it finished! Hang in there!

  18. Oh my. I don't know how you are doing it all. I'm sending you lots of positive vibes! Funny you should do a post on a show set in the Hamptons as I was there this weekend.

  19. Renovations are always draining. It's not fun to live through, but it is so great, and worth it when it's done. At least you are not sleeping among all that mess, and please, promise us that you will NOT sleep in one of those buckets! Enjoyed your little tv show inspiration piece.

  29. I just read your last few posts and can see why you love where you live. Your past posts show the cottage to be lovely even before you've begun. If your remodeling gets too burdensome you can always look back at the posts and remember how charming it was and how MUCH MORE charming & livable it soon will be.

I had to laugh as I enjoyed the tour of Emily's place ( don't know of this show )and you discussing it all. I do love her big wood table, clean lines, and soft white sheers on the windows.

  33. I don't know that programme and although the shot from the outside is lovely, I think your house has much more charm and character, though I can see how elements can be inspiring.
The upstairs of your home will one day be as beautiful as the downstairs and I salute you (someone said that to me recently and the phrase stuck in my head, and it's very appropriate here) for all your efforts - and I'm sure Cottage does too x

J'adore tout !!! bisous
