The New Star Of Cottage

Living-Room Project - The Stove Reveal

Cottage and I have been waiting for a long time for this day. So have my readers... Here it is. The stove is here!

I was over-excited the day they brought it in and surprised that it didn't take that long to install since most of the technical work had been done the previous week.

They lit the first fire and told me to keep it alive for at least four hours, all windows open to get rid of the smell the enamel would produce the first time the stove is used. You can imagine that I was a very good girl and didn't let the fire die. It was a good thing it was summer, though, as all windows were opened... Even so, it did warm the room to a very comfortable 72°F, something that is rarey achieved in a stone cottage, even when it's hot outside !

The stove hasn't been lit again since it's summer... And I'm having trouble having the wood delivered for next winter... Can you imagine the delivery guy told me they would only deliver on tarry roads... The street Cottage is on is tarred, but not the pavement, so they told me they'll left the wood on the road and I'll have to carry it in my garden piece by piece... But our street is very narrow and if they do that it'll block the traffic, so it's not a possibility. I'm trying to find a solution...

I may have unintentionnally mislead a few of you when I wrote that we would be talking paint "colours" in this post... I should have written "paint" and that's it.

I believe in harmony of colours in small cottages. I also believe in light colours in rooms that have small windows. I believe in having only one big feature in a room. I believe in simplicity to create a serene atmosphere.

For all those reasons, I had decided a while ago that the living-room would be white. Now, which white was a question that kept my mind busy a little longer. I bought a few sample by Farrow & Ball to try them on my walls. But compared to the dining-room's beautiful white sand colour that is Pordic White, they all looked too grey or too muddy or too dull or too yellow. So the only way to go seemed to paint the living-room Pordic White as well.

It's a little complicated because if you remember when I painted the dining-room, Pordic White isn't actually a shade by Farrow & Ball. It's my own mix of half Wimborne White and half All White. If it was easy to create the mix for the very small space the dining-room is, it was a little more complicated for the living-room as I wanted the stairwell and the landing to be painted in the same shade since they are all connected. I ordered the paint at my usual Farrow & Ball stockist and then I went to a local hardware store to get a big empty lidded paint bucket. Can you believe they didn't have any and didn't want to give me or sell me one from their mixing paint stand. So I went back home, left my pride there, put on my stripped dress and went back... Magically a male seller agreed to give me a lidded bucket that was used in their display ;)

The two painted mixed together like a charm and as soon as the first coat began drying I fell in love again with the subtle white it is (it takes a few days for the pigments to give their real colour) and the way it changes depending on the time of the day or the weather.

One of the talks I had with myself was about the alcove behind the stove. I had seen some lovely examples on Pinterest of dark blue alcoves behind white stoves or of tiled alcoves... But I finally thought that simplicity was best given the fact that I have a stone wall that already catches the eye and also given the fact that the stove is a little busier than what I had in mind at first.

Now that the paint is mixed and stored in its lidded bucket, it's best to use it fast I guess. So I began working on the stairwell and the landing. I've made progress, I swear, though I really don't understand why a Petite Blonde thought it was a great idea to keep a peaked ceiling and showing beams in here!

I'm on a little paint break for a few days as my blood pressure suddenly dropped and I feel like I'm on a boat as soon as I stand up... So climbing on a step ladder with a paint brush taped to a curtain pole isn't really an option. I'm having trouble explaining to the doctor why I can't use my garden chair, though... Nevermind, I'll lay on the sofa admiring my stove and mantel!

See you next time,

A la prochaine fois,

Hasta la proxima,

PS1 : Just  in case you're a foreigner living the dream (or nightmare) of renovating an old cottage in Northen Brittany, the company that took care of gracing Cottage with a stove is  Maréchal & Brilleaud. You can read here if you want to see how the mantel was done.

PS2: The mantel is painted my usual favourite All White by Farrow & Ball.

PS3: Not pictured in this post: the mess that is behind the sofa, the right wall where I might have a "brand new" TV stand and the back wall on which the first coat of paint might already be applied...

  2. How lovely that looks Magali. At last you are getting there with your amazing projects.
    Take care of your health.

  3. Magali, I am in love with your stone wall and your stove. You have my complete admiration for sticking to your goals and using whatever means necessary (the dress) to get there. I'm thinking you might hire a local handyman with a truck to pickup the wood and bring it to your house? Good luck getting everything ready for the wood burning season ahead!

  5. I wish, I truly wish that you cold FEEL my excitement over this, Magali! This is a FINE UNIT! The design on the surface, that's one thing, but the fact that this is also functional is such a relief!

You've got the look. YOU have achieved the look you've been sharing from other photos, and I love the white with the stone, with the accents of the blue from the sea, and it's all perfect. I am so happy for YOU! I wonder if I could find an electric version of this model...

  8. lovely little fireplace stove - I would think maybe you could hire a handyman also to pick your wood for you to stack behind your house or wherever it will go - they have some very strange rules!

Bises

  16. Your new stove is gorgeous, Magali!! I bet you can't wait for that first crisp fall night to fire it up! What a nightmare with the wood delivery - you need to find a different person to deliver. My guy dumps the wood right outside my garage door, and I open the door and stack it right in the garage. And he doesn't complain a bit about my nightmare of a driveway! Anyway, you'll figure it out, and you'll be so toasty and warm and cozy this winter!

    Enjoy your week.

Vraiment, tu as beaucoup de goût.

  26. I'm so excited to see your new stove!!! She is beautiful and not so fancy as you think......but perfect!! Love the paint color, the mantel, the light fixtures, the objects on the mantel, the wonderful bouquet of flowers which includes a Butterfly Bush blossom (my fav) and especially the exposed stone wall, which all alone makes your room and cottage feel!! That was probably a run on sentence.....

Love how you use your special dress, a girl after my own heart...

About the wood.....get a different supplier, or hire a handy man to deliver to your door...wear the dress....

  31. It looks perfect and love that you kept it simple behind the stove. Sure hope your blood pressure get more level...I have high and feel the same way when it is..the floor starts moving.. Here at The Charmer it never gets cool in summer and never warm in winter.. She was built with no insulation and we need a glass door to use in winter.. Older homes do present their challenges but we really wouldn't want it any other way..

  34. Hi, Magali! Your doing a great job. Sticking to any project for a long period of time is exhausting in and of itself. Contrary to the majority of opinions I think the large expanse of white up the wall is jarring...especially next to the deep colors in the rock and the lovely soft color of the stove. (Of course, I am looking from the perspective of a camera shot and not standing in the room). But, sometimes, this perspective lets you see a truer balance of color and shape. A very soft color or the essence of the color of one of the stones would look and make the room appear softer and cause the rock wall's variegated color to receed. The white color makes the beautiful rock too prominent in the room. A slightly darker shade would provide a beautiful backdrop around the lovely stove color. The mantel should be even one shade or two, darker yet. See if you can find an old large window frame and have the glass panes removed and glass added instead to the frame. Make the mantel color a deeper shade of a color on the rock wall. This will add up to three colors blended to make one cohesive long wall tone. The rest of the room can go as you like...but the focal point wall with the stove cannot handle a large white stripe up the wall...just soften with very light sand-shaded colors. It can really impart a "sea side" feel much better than solid white sometimes. A large or small plaid pattern on throw pillows and curtain (which you can make of course, lol) could also bring warmth and the cosy "cottage" feel to the room. I know, I just can't quit, ha,ha! Poor kitty! Yet another fight?! Geez, those nine lives are whizzing by, lol. Well, I'm off...I can hear the bushes and shrubs in my garden yelling that the weeds are trying to push them out of their comfortable homes...such whiners (lol).
Keep at it, your doing great...I still have kitchen envy over your kitchen. What a magnificent makeover it was!

    2. As a retired designer sometimes my enthusiasm colors my judgement as to when I should give advice and when I should shut up. I'm so glad you gave such positive consideration to my suggestions. It will be beautiful as always by the time your finished...your penchant for honesty with lifes ups and downs (wood dilemma) I find very refreshing. Keep at it, girl, your close to the home stretch!
