Fear

Cottage Dining Nook Transformation - The Table - Part 5

All over blogland, people are painting their furniture, transforming whatever they own into beautiful pieces. I'm in awe of what they can do. Me? I'm completely terrified to ruin a piece every time I have the idea to paint. I'm also afraid of missing the wood once it's painted.

I have paint-fear, bad.

Je suis une angoissée de la peinture.

Still once I became the proud second-hand owner of my darling old English pine hutch, I knew something had to be done about my shiny yellowy cheap pine table that was right in front of it.

I decided I could paint it without fearing to ruin it (I couldn't do worse than it was) and without fearing to miss the wood, since I really didn't like it.

I began by sanding the table. This was done for two main reasons. First, I still had the tiniest hope that once stripped, the table could be restained. Second, if not, I wanted to make sure the paint wouldn't peel when applied.

Life at Cottage is always so comfortable...
It quickly appeared that I didn't really like the wood even when raw. Still, I was patient and sanded for several days (I didn't sand all day, though).

Weekend at my parents'. Life's hard...
There, any good blogger would have applied several coats of paint right away. I? I went to visit my parents for a few days... I'm sure it did the wood good to stay in its raw state for a while.

Then, I applied one coat of primer, three coats of my favourite All White by Farrow & Ball, starting by the legs. Once the legs were reattached, I painted the top. You can see on my pictures that I didn't painted under the table, because I was too lazy to sand there.

Once I was happy with the coverage, I slightly sanded the legs so the wood would reappear on the edges. It's very discreet, which is very unblogy, but just the way I like it.

My usual trick to apply paint or topcoat to the leg... Use cat food tins!

Then I applied a topcoat. I chose a water-based, mate finish one. It does look shiny on the pictures, that's because of the light coming from the window. Now, let's also be honest, even in the mate finish, the topcoat does make the table a little shinier than it was before it was applied, but it's so easy to wipe the table with a wet cloth, that I would do it again, no question.

Milo, trapped during the photo session.
Painting the table white was the best solution to fall in love with my dining nook again. Now the table doesn't hurt my eyes anymore and the hutch is the perfect wood touch I wanted in my room. Something I didn't expect, but that makes me smile every time I come into the room is how the light coming from the window now reflects on the table rather than being absorbed by it as before.

I think I well deserve to enjoy my table and have a cup of tea. For once, no need to add a tablecloth before I take pictures!

Aaaahhh! So nice! Everything is perfect! Now, wait! Do those chairs look a little too shiny and yellowy to you?

Tout est parfait ! Enfin !

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: Apart from my painting power, I have an other amazing power, the one to destroy my own body without the help of anyone else! It works in crisis. Sometimes all is well and I can do a great number of things in a day... The last two weeks have been very, very difficult, so I don't think I'll tackle the chair project any time soon. I'd like to thank Melanie from Comfy House who gave me a hint for a new diet that might help me. Emphasis on the "might".

PS2: The unpainted part only shows if you're kneeling on the floor under the table. So I advise you not to!

  1. Hope you will soon feel better! The table looks lovely although I would have preferred if you had sanded and painted the bottom part too or at least only sanded. Waiting for the chairs but don't overdo it!AriadnefromGreece!

  5. Magali, the table looks fantastic! And a great solution to your problem too. I also suffer from the same 'paint fear' but I have taken the plunge & completed a couple of furniture projects which have really transformed the pieces so that I love them again. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint & wax, which is fantastic - gives a lovely chalky, matte finish, but best of all, requires NO SANDING!! Your cottage just keeps getting better & better, and inspires me to keep persevering with my 145 year old farm house, way down here at the bottom of the world in New Zealand ;). I hope you are able to take time to enjoy it as you go, and that you feel better soon. Sante! (and let's not mention the rugby! ;))

  7. YOU read my mind, Magali! The chairs are lovely BUT, I can see them white now! HAHAHAHHAHHA That happens! Once you paint one thing, then you start to ask that question, "Should I paint the chairs?" I THINK SO! What have you got to lose? I think that the HUTCH should remain natural, but everything else should be white. Just my thought!

  15. Your table looks wonderful painted white, Magali! I'm glad you overcame your fear of painting wood furniture, because now your china cabinet really shines in the room! I'm not sure what changes you're making in your diet, but I cut out gluten and dairy and it's made a huge difference in my life. I hope you're feeling better!

I see painted chairs in your future. :o)

  16. Your table is perfect in white. It makes the pretty backs of the chairs show up (I never really noticed them before) as well as your lovely hutch. I didn't paint underneath my table either, it's only my Chihuahuas that see it anyway, and they haven't said a word about it!

  17. Magali, great job on your table. Your vision of transforming your table was a lot of work but I'm sure you are thinking well worth it, I sure think so. I've also had your "fear" of paint, but I've just transformed a pine piece that that was so yellow I had to do something. I'll be sharing that soon. Love your new look now, it sure lets that gorgeous hutch take center stage………...

  18. I promise I won't look underneath ;). The chairs stand out more now that the table is white. For you that might not be a good thing, but from the pics it looks good to me. Chalk paint would have solved the sanding issue, but I'm sure you know that. Now you can relax and take care of yourself. Feel better!

  19. Hi.......first off..i'd like to stay at your parents for a weekend an get a bit of that..hard life experience..now for the table..it looks wonderful..an the first thing i thought was..now she needs to do something with those chairs..so i agree they need a little TLC..sorry the table took it out of you..being a working girl again makes it hard i'm sure to have enough energy to do it all..in the short time you'd probably like it done..hoping for a boring a week coming your way..

  20. It looks perfect now! You did a very good job : ), love how it brightens up the dining room and shows off the beautiful pine hutch. If you decide to do the chairs (yes, they are looking yellow ...) maybe do one a month. I find chairs are a lot of work and tiring. Relax now and let your body rest and enjoy your new to you table. xo Patty

  23. Your table turned out beautiful. It realky softens your dining area. I used to be timid in painting furniture until I tried Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. It is so easy with no need to sand anything. No need for primer. It is easy that I have painted many pieces now. I will be repainting my farmhouse table top soon because I did just a whitewash months ago but have decided I was more white so I will do a thicker coat this time. I think your chairs look fine. Either way works. I personally would want them white but the wood is nice too. I am glad you had the courage to finally paint your table! xo

  24. As long as your are happy, it does not matter how much "distressing" you do to the table. I tend to not distress and it keeps me happy. You did a good job!

  25. Your dining area looks just beautiful with the table painted white. You did a great job. If you're ever looking for chalk paint, I believe you can find it on amazon. It's a great solution for pieces that would otherwise need to be sanded. Your cottage is lovely.

    1. The only stockist in Brittany for AS chalk paint closed last summer. I've looked on line ut it does make it even more expensive. I'm keeping my fingers crossed an other stockist in Brittany is going to open.

  26. Your table turned out beautiful! Love the painted look with just the tiniest amount of distressing...perfect!!! I also agree with sealing the top with something stronger than wax. I just waxed my painted coffee table...the grandkiddo's forget to use the coasters so I had rings and discoloration from the beverages they drank. I hardly ever paint under and item and if I do it's just a light primer coat of the finished color sprayed on. And the chairs? Well, I think they would look better painted white (another color could be fun also). Then the hutch wouldn't have any competition. I like the idea of taking ones time and doing a chair a month. Take care and have a lovely week ~ Mickie

  29. I think the table looks so pretty right now! I like the chairs standing out from the table, but then I like natural woods showing through. The lightly distressed look helps age the piece. You can make your own chalk paint because no paint is worth the price they charge....for such a small size.

  33. Super, j'aime beaucoup.

  34. The table looks great. I now I can see the charming scallops on the ends. So extra-cottagey! I saw Sue's suggestion of a color to paint the chairs, and your response. I can see where you going. . .I like it. I'm pretty fearless when it comes to painting furniture. I figure if I don't like it I can always do something else. And I have done exactly that in the past. Glad you took the leap!

Magali, you have the warm beauty of your pine hutch, your fresh, white, cottage-y table, the warm texture of the chair seats, the seaglass color you mentioned above for the chair frames will be the perfect thing to complete this lovely room. 46. Your table looks fantastic - great job! Looks like a totally new table. I need to paint mine - but like you, I have that fear of "what if I mess up" holding me back. And now it's too cold to paint anything outdoors and I don't want all that mess indoors. Sooo...maybe next spring? :-) Have you tried the FODMAP diet yet? If you have IBS or any other digestive issues, I highly suggest and recommend it. You have nothing to lose except feeling horrible! It is not hard at all and feeling good is SO worth it.

  47. Very pretty and well done! From the comments I see you are planning to paint the chairs - and have even ordered the paint. I am not sure what paint you plan to use, but if it requires a primer, I really like Zinsser 123. I do not sand - but my projects have not been glossy to start, so perhaps a deglosser first, but you won't need to sand if you use a good bonding primer.

I hope you feel better soon.
