It's gorgeous with a white kitchen obviously, but it could go in any room.

C'est à la fois moderne si tous les carreaux sont identiques et cela peut donner un côté cosy, justement parce que c'est sombre.

This is where the sink will be one day. Please notice that the plate, which is there because an unfinished pipe is leaking, is an old Sarreguemines plate... A girl has to put beauty somewhere!

Voici l'avancée des travaux côté cuisine chez moi... L'isolation avance à l'endroit de ce qui sera l'emplacement de l'évier un jour ou l'autre (plutôt l'autre, apparemment!). Remarquez tout de même que c'est une vieille assiette Sarreguemines qui récolte la goutte d'eau qui tombe toujours régulièrement d'un tuyau encore inachevé. La classe au milieu du chantier, n'est ce pas?

For those of you who are very impatient, I didn't choose slate for my cottage for the same reason I didn't choose terracotta... Can you think of the reason? - Susan and Mom, don't tell anyone please, even if they bribe you, except if that's enough to pay for the kitchen!

Floor Me Once

Cottage Flooring Ideas - Part 3

I'm not trying to be smart (I'm way too tired + blonde for that), but I'm going to state two things that everybody seems to agree on.

Alors que je cherchais des idées pour mon sol, je suis tombée sur le film The Holiday dans lequel il y a un charmant petit cottage anglais... Et là, je me suis aperçue que le sol n'était pas en parquet, mais en terre cuite! Voyez un peu ce que ça donne juste en dessous.

1) People associate cottages with hardwood floors (see part 2 for some inspiration).

2) The cottage featured in the film The Holiday seems to be the perfect cottage for most people. Here is a picture of it.

 Notice something? The downstairs have terracotta floors.

Proof that you can have a nice cottage feel with something else than hardwood floor. Sigh of relief.

 To me, terracotta floors says south of France and warm afternoons spent inside because the sun's too hot outside.

It definitely conveyed the perfect amount of cottage-ness, coziness and hictoric-ness I wanted for my fisherman's cottage.  (two words in this sentence may or may not have been made up by me...)

La terre cuite combinait tout ce que je voulais pour ma petite maison: un côté cozy, un aspect cottage et un clin d'oeil à l'ancien temps.

Still, this is not the choice I made for the Little White House for a very good reason I will tell you in the next part! So, guess again!

Cependant, ce n'est pas le choix que j'ai fait et ce pour une excellente raison que je vous dévoilerais lors de la prochaine partie... Alors, une autre idée?

As you can see isolation is already put in this part of the cottage... The kitchen is still pretty much a mess...

Comme vous pouvez le voir, l'isolation a commencé dans la salle-à-manger. C'est une isolation au chanvre, supposé non allergène... Vu l'état de mes mains, il y a quand même quelque chose auquel je suis allergique, je soupçonne, sans preuve, la colle qu'utilise le plombier pour ses raccords!

Eh bien, au risque de perdre quelques lecteurs, ce n'est pas le choix que j'ai fait pour le rez-de-chaussée du cottage. Quand une maison est construite à même le sol sur un terrain aussi humide que le mien, cela n'est guère conseillé. D'ailleurs, ma voisine, qui avait fait ce choix il y a quelques années, a des lames qui pourrissent... C'est tout de suite moins cozy.

Well, I might lose a few followers, but I'm sorry to tell you, this was actually not an option for me. The cottage is build on ground level and there's a water spring in the garden... My neighbour chose hardwood floor and her wood is roting. Even if I did a proper insulation that she didn't do, I wasn't going to take any risk. So did I have to say goodbye to cottage style?  Or did I find an other idea that I'm not going to share today?

Just in case you're still reading and you're still drooling, I'm going to help you stop asap with a lovely picture of what my cottage kitchen looks like these days...

Sing Sweet Nightingale

Cottage Flooring Ideas - Part 1

I must say that flooring has been on my mind for a while for a series. And since the flood I had at the end of April and the renovation going on at the moment at the cottage, I spend a lot of time cleaning the floor. The flood left some part of my grout very dirty, so I'm doing it Cinderella-way: on my knees, tile after tile.

Ecrire une série sur le choix des sols me trottait dans la tête depuis un moment. Après l'inondation de la fin Avril et les travaux qui s'éternisent au cottage, je passe beaucoup de temps à frotter mon sol... Ce sont les joints surtout qui trinquent et donc je nettoie façon Cinderella: à genoux, à la brosse, carreau après carreau. Du coup, cela me semble approprié de lancer la série maintenant!

I wish I could sing like Cinderella, but I'm more of a Drizella and one of my cats hates when I do! The cats do their role to perfection, leaving nice little paw marks on my floor (it's easy with all the plaster dust in the house right now!).

J'aimerai chanter comme Cendrillon, mais moi, c'est plutôt la moche demi-soeur! D'ailleurs un de mes chats déteste quand je pousse la chansonnette!  Tous les deux jouent le rôle de Lucifer à la perfection, me laissant des traces de pattes pleines de poussière de plâtre dans toute la maison!

So why have cottage floors been on my mind for so long?

Pourquoi donc les revêtements de sol m'occupent-ils depuis un moment?

Because when I bought the cottage, there were three different floors in the very tiny 500 square feet downstairs.

Parce que quand j'ai acheté le cottage, il y avait trois sols différents dans les 45 mètres carrés du rez-de-chaussée.

I didn't like any of the three. The dining-room tiles were bad imitation of terra cotta, the kitchen floor was made of tiles that are supposed to be used outside (and there's a reason for that, it's impossible to clean wihtout a hose) and the living-room floor was my favourite - white tiles... that had dents and stains everywhere!

Une mauvaise imitation de terre cuite dans la salle-à-manger, un carrelage de terrasse dans la cuisine (impossible à nettoyer, sauf au tuyau d'arrosage - c'est pour ça que c'est un carrelage d'extérieur) et le salon avait le moins affreux, un carrelage blanc plein de tâches indélébiles.

Dear Prince, if you ever find your way, I'm sure the shoe will fit, I have the smallest feet! If you could bring some gloves as well, that would be very nice as my hands are not in the best of shape with all the scrubbing and still no hot water in the cottage! Thank you very much.

Cher Prince, si tu trouves le chemin du cottage, je suis sûre que la chaussure m'ira, j'ai de tout petits pieds! Mais si tu voulais aussi m'apporter une paire de gants, ce serait vraiment chic parce qu'avec tout ce ménage et toujours pas d'eau chaude au cottage, j'ai les mains en piteux état!

Château de Pontivy

Are you ready for an other little trip around my cottage? Please if you have a fan and a sun hat, grap them before we go.

Etes-vous prêt pour une nouvelle petite virée bretonne dans les alentours de mon cottage? Prenez votre éventail et votre chapeau de soleil avant que l'on parte, s'il vous plaît.

Right in the middle of today's Brittany is the valley of the Blavet, a nice river, that sometimes still looks very much just like it must have looked like when God created it.

En plein milieu du territoire actuel de la Bretagne se situe la vallée du Blavet, charmante petite rivière bucolique, qui en certains endroits semble ne pas avoir changée depuis la nuit des temps.

There you can meet the cutest families napping in the afternoon sun.

On y fait de charmantes rencontres...

Around 686, Ivy, a monk, came all the way from England and decided to build a monastery on the Blavet banks. He also threw a bridge on the river; that's why the town is called "Pontivy" ("pont" means "bridge" in French).

Toutes les familles canards vivaient bien tranquillement jusqu'à ce qu'Ivy quitte son Angleterre pour installer un monastère sur les rives du Blavet, ce qui nécessita notamment la création d'un pont, d'où le nom de la ville.

The first castle that was built in Pontivy has been destroyed. But the one that was built in the 15th century is still there.

Le premier château construit à Pontivy a aujourd'hui disparu, mais celui construit au XVème siècle est toujours là.

At that time, castles were built to protect the lord's family and therefore there weren't too many windows looking outside and the tower walls are moe than 3 yard thick (and yes, I did the conversion right).

A l'époque, on construit pour se protéger. Il y a donc peu de grandes fenêtres sur l'extérieur et les murs des tours font plus de 3 mètres de larges. Les douves n'ont par contre jamais été mises en eau.

The castle was the reason I went to Pontivy in the first place. I arrived to late in the morning for the visits, so I chose to hike around the town and it was sunny and hot. In fact I didn't know it before going but the Blavet Valley is famous for being the hottest place in Brittany... If you're from New Mexico, don't laugh, but hot for us is anything above 75°F.

Le château, c'est la raison pour laquelle j'étais allée à Pontivy. J'étais arrivée trop tard le matin pour les visites et j'avais donc commencé par une immense ballade autour de la ville, sous le soleil, puisque la vallée du Blavet est connue pour son micro-climat (si vous êtes du sud de la France, ne rigolez pas, ça veut dire qu'il y fait un peu plus de 25°C l'été).

I came back in the afternoon and our sweet tour guide said it would be so much nicer, given the weather, to explain us the history of the castle outside rather than inside. So here we were basking in the sun, listening to the Rohan family history when I collapsed... Too much sun for me, I just fainted there. 

J'ai donc fait la visite du début d'après-midi et la guide a décidé de nous faire l'historique des lieux dans la cour intérieure pour profiter du soleil. Et là, en plein milieu de l'histoire des Rohan, je me suis écroulée... Trop de soleil pour moi! La guide n'a pas eu l'air rassurée quand je lui ai dit en revenant à moi que je continuais la visite! Du coup, elle m'a fait asseoir dans chacune des salles!!!

The guide was besides herself, especially when I said, after coming back to my senses (I feel like a Jane Austen character writing this sentence), that I wanted to do the tour. I was allowed to sit in each and every room of the castle, sometimes on the floor as there's nearly no furniture left in such an old castle.
