The Kitchen Window Series (it's a soap opera, really) - part 4

So, I had promised you that there would be other episodes after the kitchen window reveal. Here it comes.

Je vous avez promis d'autres épisodes sur ma fenêtre de cuisine que vous avez enfin pu voir dans l'épisode 3.

The kitchen is the only downtairs window facing the street. It's not a very busy street, but people do walk or jog  there to go to the nearby pond (I know, I'm lucky).

La fenêtre de la cuisine est la seule de mes fenêtres du rez-de-chaussée qui donne sur la rue. Ce n'est pas très passant, mais c'est tout de même l'itinéraire préféré des joggeurs et des familles qui vont jusqu'à l'étang tout proche.

So I needed some kind of window treatment. 

Du coup, j'avais besoin d'un rideau.

The aim was to block people's view, so the kind of curtain that only covers the top of the window that I see so often on blogland was ruled out.

Le but étant de couper la vue des promeneurs, le rideau mignon qui ne cache que le haut de la fenêtre a été éliminé d'office.

I had that vision of white sheer curtains floating in the wind...

J'avais bien une vision idyllique de voilages flottant dans le vent...

But either it would have slapped jogger in the face while jogging in front of the cottage or they would have caught fire while I was cooking! Ruled out... Or nearly.

Mais cela risquait d'énerver les passants, ou de prendre feu dans la cuisine. Eliminé aussi, ou presque.

It soon became obvious that café curtains were both something I like and a reasonable choice.

Le choix judicieux, et qui me plaisait, s'est vite avéré être un rideau de type bistrot à mi-hauteur.

 They would allow the light to come in by the top part of the window and would prevent joggers from peeking at the inside of the cottage. 

Cela permettait à la lumière de rentrer par le haut de la fenêtre et coupait radicalement les regards indiscrets.

But I wanted them to be able to be opened if I'd like to.

Mais je voulais que les miens puissent ouvrir quand je le souhaitais.

And I wanted them white.

Et je les voulais blancs.

So, now is the time to remind you that I have very limited sewing skills... And that all the café curtains I was able to find in shops were both not to my liking and too expensive.

C'est le moment de vous avouer mes compétences très limitées en couture... Et de vous dire que tout ce que j'ai trouvé dans le commerce qui ressemblait de loin seulement à ce que j'avais en tête était très cher.

High Tide

I'd like to thank everyone for all your kind comments about my kitchen window I showed you in my last post. It was really nice to read you thought I did well.

Un grand merci pour tous vos gentils commentaires sur ma fenêtre de cuisine. C'était vraiment agréable de lire ces petits mots.

I still have a few projects to show you linked to that window, but being at my parents' this week, I just don't have the time I need to write those posts.

J'ai encore quelques projets à vous montrer à propos de cette fenêtre, mais étant avec mes parents cette semaine, le temps m'a manqué pour écrire les articles. Reprise du rythme normal dès demain.

I'm also adjusting to a new laptop so everything takes a little longer than usual.

Je suis aussi en train de m'habituer à un nouvel ordinateur et surtout au nouveau Windows, donc tout prend un peu plus de temps pour l'instant.

But I believe you can enjoy the break I'm taking from renovating as well. And head over to the beach with me.

Mais je pensais qu'une petite pause vous serait aussi bénéfique qu'à moi. Allons à la plage.

My parents live in a seaside town called Dinard and this week, the tide was high at about noon, which made going to the beach a special treat.

La marée est haute vers midi en ce moment, ce qui rend la plage particulièrement magique.

Every picture was "one take" as usual with my camera who says "battery depleted" after five pictures, that's why I couldn't re-take that last one, even if my shadow isn't in the middle.

Dream Window

The Kitchen Window Series (it's a soap opera, really) - part 3

As I already told some of you, my old laptop crashed the day I arrived at my parents'. I know I don't seem to be the luckiest girl on the planet, but in the other hand, I'm happy to have a sick computer and healthy parents rather than the other way round.

Comme je l'ai déjà raconté à certains, mon ordinateur portable est en très mauvaise santé et je pense qu'il va falloir que je le remplace. Vous devez penser que je suis vraiment malchanceuse, mais je préfère que ce soit l'ordinateur qui soit malade plutôt que quelqu'un de la famille.

Still, knowing you were all unable to sleep because you were so excited about my new window, I managed to get it repaired, even if it's temporary apparently and a new one is going to be purchased.

Mais, sachant que vous attendiez avec impatience des nouvelles de ma fenêtre, je me suis arrangée pour faire faire une petite réparation qui ne tiendra sûrement pas longtemps, juste pour vous montrer quelques photos.

So, are you all ready to see my new window? Take a deep breath, here it is!

Let me tell you, it was very difficult to find someone that understood what kind of window I wanted.

J'aime autant vous dire que de nos jours se faire faire une fenêtre comme ça en France, ce n'est pas facile.

Right now what's all the rage in France is that kind of window:

Ce que tout le monde me conseillait, c'était la fenêtre plein jour.

I, on the contrary, wanted a wooden window and a few panes to add character. Nobody seemed to find it was a good idea.

Au contraire, moi, je voulais du bois et des croisillons. Personne ne semblait trouver que c'était une bonne idée!

So I drew a sketch of what I wanted. And this is what I drew and finally got!

Du coup, j'ai fini par dessiner ce que je voulais et trouver un charpentier qui a réalisé mon dessin.

The lowest part of the window has four panes and doesn't open, so I can display a few things here and still be able to open the window.

La partie basse ne s'ouvre pas pour que je puisse mettre plein de petite vaisselle devant sans que cela m'empêche d'ouvrir la fenêtre.

The window was actually changed in November and the hydrangeas were really shabby, but I couldn't wait to take a picture, after I painted it.

La fenêtre a en fait été changée en novembre et les hortensias étaient bien moches, mais je n'avais pas résisté à l'envie de prendre cette photo juste après avoir peint la fenêtre.

I chose to paint it All White by Farrow and Ball, which is the paint I chose for my ceiling. There's nothing like a fresh coat of white on a paned window, according to me.

Je l'ai peint du même blanc (All White de Farrow & Ball) que celui qui a été utilisé pour le plafond.

Now if you think the series is over with that reveal, you couldn't be more wrong. Be sure that if the reveal was quicker than usual, it's because I have a few things up my sleeve.

Maintenant, si vous croyez cette série terminée avec la pose de la fenêtre, vous vous mettez le doigt dans l'oeil! J'ai encore plein de petits projets liés à cette fenêtre. Juste pour vous mettre l'eau à la bouche...

The first one is about this handle that came with the window.

Does it look cottage-y or not? NOT! It's going to get changed soon. The picture above is after the primer and before painting.

Vous avez jeté un oeil sur la poignée que m'avait prévue le charpentier? ça fait cottage d'après vous? Non, non, non... Je vais la changer!

Then, you may have noticed in the first picture, that I tried for the very first time my hand at sewing curtains (that's kind of an overstatement for what I really did...) and I'll tell you more about that project later.

Ensuite, vous avez peut-être remarqué des rideaux dans la première photo. Je vous expliquerai tout de mes talents de couturière (très, très limités) dans un prochain article.

One of the best thing about blogland is realising you're not the only crazy person who thinks a window is very important! I did feel alone before discovering blogs.

Now, the kitchen project is really killing me and it's only at its first stages. But tonight, I can feel every muscle of my body and I'm beyind tired.

Rear Window

The Kitchen Window Series (it's a sopa opera, really) - part 1

So, I'm going to tell you my kitchen window's story this month. "How can that be a series?" are you asking yourself. Well, I, on the other hand, am worried that I won't be able to tell you everything there's to it in a month!

Ce mois-ci, la saga (je crois que cela va dépasser la série) va être consacré à la fenêtre de cuisine. Si, si, je vous assure, cela va prendre un bout de temps!

Are you back to the cottage? Well, I'm pretty sure every time I tell you I live in a fisherman's cottage in France, you imagine I cook in a kitchen looking somewhat like that.

Vous êtes de retour? Bon, je suppose que lorsque je vous parle de mon petit cottage de pêcheur, vous m'imaginez tous en train de préparer mes recettes préférées dans une cuisine qui ressemble un peu à ça...

Well, at least, that's what I would imagine, if I didn't have to face a harsh reality every morning when I come into the kitchen in my neightgown to put the kettle on.

Moi, en tout cas, c'est ce que j'avais en tête en cherchant la maison, mais voilà ce à quoi ressemblait la cuisine le jour où j'ai visité la maison...

This is what the kitchen looked like the day I first visited the house. Not really cottage-y, is it?

Pas très "cottage", tout ça, hein?

I first visited the house in April, so hydrangeas weren't blooming yet.

Now, I still don't have my dream kitchen, but some work has already been done.

• The wall between the kitchen and dining-room is gone. (Missed that? It's here).
  
• The floor is no longer that orange ugliness. (Missed that too? It's here).
  
• The ceiling is no longer made of drywalls badly patched. (Missed that as well? It's here).
  
  
  

En fait, je n'ai toujours pas la cuisine de mes rêves, mais quelques progrès ont été faits.

•  Le mur entre la cuisine et la salle-à-manger est tombé. (Vous avez manqué ça? C'est ici.)
• Le sol n'est plus constitué de dalles orangées de terrasse. (Vous avez aussi manqué ça? C'est là.)
• Le faux plafond est parti. (Ne me dites pas.... C'est là.)

 The ugliness we're tackling this month is the window.

 Ce mois-ci, on s'attaque donc à la méchante fenêtre. J'avais plein de raison de vouloir la changer: le tour en PVC énorme gâchait la lumière, la fenêtre coulissante était étonnement facile à déboîter de l'extérieur, et surtout, elle ne faisait pas assez "cottage"à mon goût!

I had several reasons to change it:

• Number one reason for me: it wasn't cottage-y enough. I'm the only one around here who understood that reason and I hope some people on blogland will side with me on this one.
• Though the house is old and therefore all the windows have weird proportions, previous owners had bought a standard window and had put some vinyl all around so there wouldn't be a gaping hole between the window and the wall. So much light was lost.
• It's the only window on the "front" of the house, meaning on the road and this sliding window was so easy to open from the outside I didn't like it very much.

So, can you guess what the new window look like? You didn't expect me to show it to you right away, did you?

Bon, alors, vous avez deviné à quoi ressemble la nouvelle fenêtre? Non, mais vous ne croyiez tout de même pas que j'allais vous la montrer tout de suite!
