The Corridor

My Cottage Floor Plan - Part 3

My cottage is the kind of basic fisherman's house here in Brittany: a door and one window on each side.

So I suspected that originally there was an entrance corridor with the staircase and three doors to the living-room (that would have been called the main room), the kitchen and the bedroom.

It turned out true when I (and by "I", I don't really mean "I") ripped the fake ceiling that the previous owners had put on the beams.

As you can see, the previous-previous owners had painted the ceiling in the corridor yellow and in the living-room green.

Please admire how I staged all the pipes to take this picture... Notice also how the huge vaccuum has the same accent colour as the ceiling... I put so much thought in that!

Anyway, came the time when I wondered if the original corridor that had disappeared at some point should come back or not...

I know, many people hates corridors, but I believe they can have potential as doors can be pretty features. Have a look down there if you think I'm crazy.

Isn't that typically "old house"?

I love that because it's a small space in which you don't stay for hours, you can have fun with colours and patterns and won't get tired of it.

I had fun in my previous flat with faded pink walls in the corridor. I never regreted that choice, even if every one thought it was stupid before they actually saw the result. I'm sorry I don't have a picture. It was BB (Before Blogging).

Sometimes in old houses, there's a fabulous patterned floor in corridors, like this one.

Had I found that kind of vintage tiles in my cottage, I wouldn't have hesitated one second, I'd have kept them.

Since there was none of those lovely tiles, but basically only dirt, I had the possibility to get rid of any corridor: the entrance door would lead to the living-room.

I got from some of your comments that you are eager to see what choices I've made for my cottage... But can you wait a little more?

I'm a bit late in my posting schedule, due to a hurt cat who is limping like crazy. The vet told me he would be ok if he took the medicine he gave (and by "gave" I mean "sold") me. But that's easier said than done. I couldn't find him anywhere today... So before it got dark, I went calling for him all around the cottage, which means mostly very muddy (thanks to the rain) fields!!! Good news, I found him; bad news, it took an hour so I'm running late.

Thanks to all of you who co-wrote part 1 and part 2 of this study about floor plans thanks to your very interesting comments.

See you soon about my very own corridor... unless I decided to go sans-corridor...

  4. I have this feeling of 'been there, done that' when I look at your renovations! Our staircase was so similar, old chestnut and we kept as much as possible. Green beams also! There must have been a paint sale on green.

  7. Magali, please stop with the teasing... the suspense is killing me! And thank you for that inspired staging, the green ceiling echoes so lovely on the vacuum cleaner :))))
Even if hallways are really charming and allow a lovely pattern mix, I hope you went with the entrance opening on the living room. Sometimes a larger space makes up for other details...

  8. I do not have a separate corridor but a little platform area to step into. I love the walled coridor but then I would have a smaller living room. Walled entrances are the marks of larger homes which are grand. Your home has cottage charm. Have you ever seen the movie "Captains Courageous"? Your home reminds me of that movie about a fishing village.

  9. I love all those ideas. The patterned tile is very unusual and it is not something one sees around here. Mexican tile would be most similar, but that has become uncommon.

Unfortunately, I have a limping cat too, but he is running around like normal, unlike the one I had to take to the vet a couple of weeks ago. I hope your cat is better soon.

I guess I have to get around to taking pictures, but I really need a new camera. I tried to take some yesterday, but the camera is going.

I just walk into the house. A desk alongside a sofa make a corridor with decor on the wall.

    1. What's up with cats and limping these days? Do they think it's sexy? I'm pretty sure mine exagerate the limping when I'm around!

  12. Oh How I have dreamed about an entry hall. You walk right into our house and bing, bang....boom you are here. I have imagined all the ways that we could do it but the $$ signs shut it down every time. :)
Can't wait to see more photos.

  13. Hi Magali: I am sure that no matter what you choose, your home will be beautiful! And I hope your cat is feeling better soon--it's always challenging to medicate cats, at least it often has been for us in times past.

  14. This is so much fun - you are keeping us guessing! I cannot wait to see the end result, because I know it will be fabulous. Love how the vacuum cleaner matched the ceiling - you are a genius!!

  16. Dear Magali,
I know I dont know you well but I would like to say something about corridors.
Corridors in a house just make my hair stand because all the horrid movies make people's imaginations go wild. I suspect that has some relations to the design. As you know, people seldom stay in corridors for long and so some funny 'guy' or ' ghosts' spirits like lingering in there especially if there is no sunshine coming in from outside.

I once stayed in a flat with long dark corridor and the first night i was there, just when i was about to lie down and sleep, i heard the heavy breathing outside in the corridor, it's the death of a man, but the flat owner of course told me that cos someone from upper floor got lung problem and had to use the machine to help breathing, that's where the noise is from but you know what, i never heard that in the day time, only at night.

Unless there is enough sunshine, i wont have the corridor.

i dont know, whenever i go rent a flat, i always always avoid corridors.

Anyway, it's your house, it's your choice.

    Have a nice weekend.

    Felicity

  17. I find this fascinating! Lovely cottage, and whether or not one wants corridors probably has a lot to do with how much overall square footage there is in the house. Now I'm eager to go back through and read the rest of this story. Thank you so much for stopping in at Cranberry Morning. It is nice to meet you! And I am now your newest follower via GFC and Feedly.
